Thanks guys.

The "set term jpeg" in Windows gnuplot was not recognized.
I used a directly downloaded binary of gnuplot, "gp41-April22_2005-winbin".
It could be that this is too old.
The long version is :
        G N U P L O T
        Version 4.1 patchlevel 0
        last modified Sat Jul  3 00:04:32 CEST 2004
        System: MS-Windows 32 bit


On the Linux platform, however, the above "set term jpeg" is recognized
and I was able to get my output in jpeg format.
I guess I will have to build the gnuplot from the sources for Windows or
as suggested elsewhere the gd library may be missing. Any suggestions on
this one too?

Then I suggest you use 'set term jpeg' on a reasonably correctly built,
current gnuplot, and be done with it.

"Something like" doesn't give us anywhere near enough information on 
what you actually did.  Without that (and information on what gnuplot 
version you're running --> "show version long"), it's quite impossible 
to help you.

Careful here.  "set term post enhanced" is not meant to give you any 
usable bounding box at all.  If you want a meaningful bounding box, you 
really should use the "eps" option.

That seems overly complicated --- ghostscript already comes with a 
script that automatically calculates a "perfect" bounding box.  It's 
called ps2epsi, and I'm almost completely sure that other tools already 
exist which do similar work.  I.e. you could just ps2epsi | ps2pdf

OTOH, if what you want to produce is a PDF, why not just use the PDF 
terminal (assuming you're in a position to compile it in)?

Hi Zeray,
this depends on the gnuplot version and how things have been compiled. What=
 I=20
can do (and hopefully you, too):

in gnuplot:
set terminal pbm color [other related options]
set output "dummy.ppm"
plot  x*x

and afterwards (well; if you have cygwin you might have those tools, too):
ppmtojpeg dummy.ppm

or=20
ppm2tiff dummy.ppm

there you should get what you want to.

Apart from this you would need a gnuplot compiled & linked against libgd wi=
th=20
the gd-terminal included, I cannot tell whether this is available as=20
precompiled version for Windows.

I hope that the netpbm-tools are available in your cygwin installation.

I have to admit that I did not read the docs thoroughly enough; the problem=

arises from the fact that I had been searching for a line attribute "dash"=
=20
among the line styles but should have searched among the terminal=20
capabilities. This is the way it is with gnuplot as many attributes are=20
restricted to the terminal's capability; however, it would be nice to have =
a=20
little one-liner hint within "help set style line" or "help plot with ".

Converting gnuplot output from ps to pdf (set terminal postscript=20
enhanced ...) via ghostscript (either ps2pdf or better epstopdf) I found =
=A0=20
that the default bounding box in XXX.ps out of gnuplot, XXX.ps being the=20
output causes somewhat too large distances between the figure and the=20
caption /and / or the preceeding text in TeX (matter of taste, though ...).=
=20
This can be shown by putting a \framebox around the included figure.

To circumvent this I suggest the following procedure which (might) be of=20
interest for other folks, too. I send the short script "dummy.plt" as an=20
attachement because my mailer wraps the lines wildly what might disturb the=
=20
functionality. This script implies the usage of epstopdf, it does not work=
=20
with ps2pdf. You need both sed and ghostscript installed.

The contents of the ps - file is filtered by sed, the BoundingBox size is=20
replaced by a different one that is achieved from gs -sDEVICE=3Dbbox.

The procedure has been tested in linux, should work in any Unix. Using=20
Windows, you might have to manually call ghostscript and manually edit the=
=20
ps-file before converting it into pdf.

Hi,
I would like to have the gnuplot outputs direct in jpeg or jpg formats.
I tried something like the following:
      set terminal <terminal_name>                                <--- eg

      set output "<output_filename>"                               <-- eg
"ztest.out"
                      ....
                load '<my_plot_command_file>'

Tried also Cygwin's tool:
   cjpeg ztest.out  > ztest.jpg
For this, I get the message:   ... not a ppm|pgm ...

Can anyone help here?
Any conversion tools for this?

[Gnuplot-info] sending palette to file

I'm trying to send gnuplot's color palette to a 
separate file so that graphs made in other applications
(R, for example) use the same color scheme. So
far I've tried
  
  set output "palette.out"
  show palette palette 128 int
  set output

The result is that three columns of r,g,b
color intensitites fly by on my screen and
the file, palette.out, is generated, but
contains no data.

I'm running gnuplot 4.0 on Windows XP.

Looks like you seriously broke your X11 configuration, likely by 
fiddling with the setting of the DISPLAY variable.  Can you start any 
XWindows programs from inside a shell?

That switch doesn't "decide" on whether pdf or DVI is to be built.  It 
tries to detect which of them is being used.  This may well be 
superfluous, since modern hyperref versions probably already figure that 
out for themselves.

So: what exactly did this break?  What were the symptoms that something 
was wrong?

That doesn't make tex choose anything --- at least, that's not what it's 
supposed to do.  I would think it a very strange TeX installation that 
switches to PDF output because the input file asks if the output is to 
PDF (and tells the hyperref package about the result of that inquiry).

there is no error message. Within titlepag.tex there is a switch that decid=

whether to build pdf or dvi. Since the more recent TeX versions (this is tr=
ue=20
for tetex-3.0 at least ...) are based on pdftex, my system comes to that=20
switch in a way that it defaults to pdf. By the way, this is what I wrote i=
n=20
my first email.

The following switch makes *my* tetex-3.0 always choose pdftex by asserting=
=20
"pdftex," to \OtherHyperrefOpt.
So, there is no errormessage and nothing in the logs as for TeX everything=
=20
"seems" right.

My solution was to put a % in front of the line \OtherHyperrefOpt within=20
\usepackage, that made it work again. Obviously \pdfoutput is *not*=20
undefinied per default, that seems to cause the erratic behaviour - maybe=20
that has changed within tetex or I have set unintentionally my tetex=20
configuration that way. What again brings me to the point that a different=
=20
switch might be better in this case.

building the docs with tetex 3.0 fails (for me ...) due to the following=20
issue:
in titlepag.tex there is a switch to distinguish whether dvi or pdf output=
=20
should be generated.
However, this test fails on my box for some reason and I always get pdf.=20
Therefore all related building efforts fail.
I modified titlepage.tex through the makefile (in docs/Makefile.in)

cat titlepag.tex | sed \=20
's/\\def\\OtherHyperrefOpt{pdftex,}/\\def\\OtherHyperrefOpt{}%pdftex;/g' >=
=20
titlepag.out \
mv titlepag.out titlepag.tex; \

but I do not think that is the way it should be. Any ideas?

[Gnuplot-info] limiting significant figures with print

Gentlemen,

Along with graph plotting, I use the "print command" to get numerical
outputs.  The output is always in 15 significant figures,  and 5 would be
much better for me.

Since gnuplot seems to be built on C language, is there any kind of floating
point command that would limit the printout to 5 significant figures?

I have been reading the docs over and over again, I fiddled around with the=

options, but maybe I am simply to silly:

how do I plot a graph with a dash-dot line?

(if the dots would not be too low it would look somehow like this).

plot x*x w l ....????

I am using gnuplot 4.0 on linux; both with terminal x11 and with terminal=20
postscript enhanced.

Hi,

I was doing the following using gnuplot:

gnuplot> set xdata time
gnuplot> set timefmt "%H:%M"
gnuplot> set term png
Terminal type set to 'png'
Options are 'small color picsize 640 480 '
gnuplot> set output "gnuplot1.png"
gnuplot>
gnuplot> plot "graph_input.txt"



Now, I am trying to use the Chart::Graph::Gnuplot perl module.  Here is
what I have:

gnuplot({"xdata" => "time",
             "timefmt" => "%H:%M",
             "output type" => "png",
             "output file" => "gnuplot1.png",



What do I need to actually plot the input file called
"graph_input.txt"?  Also how does the closing syntax work with the
opening ({ brackets?  Hopefully someone can help me get this working, I
appreciate all the help.

Start with 'demo/world.dem', add some 'set arrow ... nohead' statements 
for the rays.

Re-read "help set pm3d", in particular all the mentions of the 
"corners2color" option.

That wish is quite self-contradictive.

You may want to re-map the z value to conserve dynamic range neare +/-1,
while wasting as little space as possible on the intervening region. 
Something like

	splot 'file' u 1:2:(tanh(0.95*$3))

maybe.

Working on drawings for a series of articles on map projections and
wondering if gnuplot is the right tool for this.  Attached are a couple of
samples of the kind of output I'm looking for.
These samples were produced in xfig, with a lot of manual intervention.  Am
looking for an easier and more accurate way to do this process.

If anyone can indicate a way to reproduce these things in gnuplot, I would
appreciate some examples or at least some pointers!

If gnuplot is not the appropriate tool, would appreciate suggestions of
other tools.  I have been looking at G. Nobre's Featpost extension to the
Metapost language (matagalatlante.org/nobre/featpost/doc/featpost-1.html )

1) A sphere tangent to a plane at its south pole.  Meridians drawn with
hidden line removal.  Two lines, drawn in a different style, between the
north pole and the plene, passing through the sphere without
hidden-line removal.

You should start by not plotting the grid via functions, but via

	set grid polar

For the remaining details, I highly recommend you have a look at the
example script 'poldat.dem' you received with gnuplot.  The second
plot ("antenna pattern") should be almost exactly equivalent to what
you're trying to do.

Well, you selected "polar" mode, so yes, you data should be in polar 
mode.  Otherwise, turn off 'set polar' and plot them as they are.

need to convert to polar first..
