Then I suggest you use 'set term jpeg' on a reasonably correctly built,
current gnuplot, and be done with it.

"Something like" doesn't give us anywhere near enough information on 
what you actually did.  Without that (and information on what gnuplot 
version you're running --> "show version long"), it's quite impossible 
to help you.
