I used your commands but get an error again:

gnuplot> plot 'gnu_apache2.file' using 2:9
		                                           ^
              no data point found in specified file

Its a little bit complicated to use gnuplot, or?

What data do you want to plot?
The first 5 columns contain the same data in each column. 
Try to comment out the first line with # as the first character.
Look at the plot command and specifically under 28.1 Data-file.
Especially look at 28.1.7 Using command.

You're using rather strange terms to explain what you're trying to do.
gnuplot doesn't "import" data files --- it's a command-driven program, 
and some of the commands are given the name of a data file that they 
will read and display immediately, according to the settings made 
before.  You really have to read the documentation to be able to work 
with gnuplot.

This should be easy enough to plot.

	set timefmt '%B %d %H:%M:%S %Y'
	set format x
	plot 'data' using 2:9

Hi! I'm not an expert, but probably it helps :=20

1) Add a # to the title line (convert it to a comment line).=20
2) Try to use the same whitespace as separator, I mean, all tabs or all=20
spaces, but it is not mandatory. For example, the first and second line of=
=20
your file would be (using spaces as delimiters) :

#starttime seconds ctime dtime ttime wait
Thu Aug 25 13:06:40 2005 1124968000006645 1 57 58 1
...

and observe that, for example, 57 is in the column 8

No, not even using SF.net's instructions because I just found out that the 
issues are more than just firewall - my box can't even connect to the the cvs 
host cvs-pserver.sourceforge.net.

the usual "when it's ready."

I'm quite sure that there is no such way, at least in 4.0.  In the 
development version you can now choose colours explicitly, for most plot 
elements.

The most gnuplot is prepared to give you is a set of horizontal lines on 
the back walls of the graph box, but no full grid.  See 'help set grid' 
or just try

	set grid xytics ztics

I'm using Gnuplot 4.0 and try to plot 3D data with a grid. If I do "set 
grid" I only get a grid in the xy plane, but I also want grids in the xz 
and yz plane. I tried all morning, but did not manage to get it. Can

available for "download"? I currently use 4.0 and I would really like to use 
two features, namely ticlabels & histograms-styled plotting, available in 4.1. 
I cannot get a CVS version of the latter from the CVS server because of 
firewall issues.

It will also make some printouts impossible to generate, though --- 30 
days' data would be longer than your paper.

The only way of doing this reliably is to always set your x range to the 
same interval, in data units, e.g. always 20 days, and only modify the 
starting point.  For full stability, you'll then also want to fix all 
the margins (--> "help set lmargin").

I'm making several plots of a large data set and I'd like for the
postscript versions of my plots to all have the same scale rather than
the same size.  For example a plot of 10 days' data might be 5 inches
long, and 14 days' data would then be 7 inches long.  This will make
comparing the printouts in my logbook easier.

Is there an easy way to do this?  I'm setting the plot ranges via set
xrange, etc.

Actually, that's not a valid complaint about gnuplot 4.0 --- it's a
complaint you should address to whoever built your binary of 4.0.  It
was not built with the same options compiled in as the 3.7 one you used
before.

That's not really "gnuplot mode", that's you interacting with the 
program gnuplot.

I installed gnuplot 4.0 version recently. I have one complaint abt. this version 4.0.

I use 'bash' shell (linux operating system). When I go to gnuplot mode from bash shell,
I tried the following.

gnuplot> !ls abc<tab>

I expected '<tab>' to complete the filename stating with 'abc'(which was done in gnuplot version 3.7)

Is there anyway in version 4.0, to have <tab> function as described above.

You're expecting the gnuplot history to be persistent.  That can be 
done, but it's not available in all builds of the current release 
version.  If you need this, you may have to recompile gnuplot or update 
to the development version, with all the potential risks of 
incompatibilities and bugs that entails.

You can't.  For multiplots, the general tactics is to start out with a 
script file and edit that, testing it via the 'load' command from inside 
gnuplot, instead of fiddling with the plot at the gnuplot prompt then 
only saving it at the very end.

You would have to use ordinary 'set label' statements for that.  Best to 
remove them after the first plot to avoid overpainting.
