[Gnuplot-info] sending palette to file

I'm trying to send gnuplot's color palette to a 
separate file so that graphs made in other applications
(R, for example) use the same color scheme. So
far I've tried
  
  set output "palette.out"
  show palette palette 128 int
  set output

The result is that three columns of r,g,b
color intensitites fly by on my screen and
the file, palette.out, is generated, but
contains no data.

I'm running gnuplot 4.0 on Windows XP.
