./configure -with-tutorial

This works only if you actually have latex installed on the system.

The tutorial is not built by default because it is very out of date.  It
gives examples only for the plain latex terminal (set term latex), which is
severely limited in its capabilities, and for epslatex.  Although it
mentions the existence of the eepic, emtex, tikz, and context terminals, it
gives no examples or guidance about when you might want to use them.  It
does not even mention cairolatex or texdraw,  Also it does not explain how
you would integrate gnuplot output with other latex authoring tools such as
LyX (see recent question on the newsgroup).

So I think building the tutorial will not be very helpful until someone
takes the time to revise and update it.

I try to figure out whether it is possible to define a set of preferred 
line styles, and occasionally switch to another dot/dash pattern while 
keeping all other settings.

Say, I have a default with
 > set style line 1 lt 1 lc 1 lw 2
and want to use it except to switch to some dot/dashed line.
 > plot sin(x) ls 1 lt 2
does obviously not work because it will use all definitions of
linetype 2, and
 > plot sin(x) lt 1 ls 1
gives an error.

Moreover, if I redefine linetypes with
 > set linetype 1 lt 1 lc 1 lw 2
 > set linetype 2 lt 1 lc 2 lw 2
the dot/dash-pattern number 2 becomes entirely inaccessible, because it 
would be addressed with "lt 2" which was set to the dot/dash-pattern 
number 1.

I could only find a 9+ year old devel-mailing list discussion whether a 
"dashtype" keyword should be considered for implementation. My only idea 
left would be to use macros, but I find that a bit cumbersome.

Am I overlooking something?

[Gnuplot-info] 3d plot

I have to plot a 3d graph, where my input contains x,y,z values. This is an
indoor noise map. The data is completly random.

According the manual, the input for gnuplot shall be devided by blank lines to
blocks. Is there any script that does this for me? Do I have to roll my own?

FWIW, I adopted a different hack, splitting the arrow (which is really a 
‘yzeroaxis’ in my plot) in two:

set lab "|b|² ~ 1/4" at -2.2,4.5 tc ls 3 noenh
set obj rect center 0,4.5 size char 1,char 1 fs solid noborder front
set arr from 0, graph 0 to 0, graph 0.3 nohead front
set arr from 0, graph 0 to 0, graph 1   nohead

Though this may be less general as a solution.

There is no way to get * label in front of arrow in front of curve *,
because arrows are always drawn after labels.   However, in desperation you
could use "plot '-' with vectors" to draw the arrow as the last element of
the plot using inline data for the arrow head and tail. Then you can make
the rectangle and the label both "front" and you should be all set.

FYI the development version allows you to draw a label in an opaque box in
a single operation:
     set style textbox opaque
     set label "foo" boxed

the graph; draw a box over the arrow; draw a label over the box.  The 
purpose of the box is to provide a white background for the label.

What does not work for me is the correct “order of opacity” label > box

In version 4.6 there is a "real" polar axis, whereas earlier versions made
due with combined use of the x and y axes.   Try changing your setup from
this:
      set polar
      set xrange[-40:40]
      set yrange[-40:40]
      set xtics axis 0,5,40
To this:
      set polar
      set rrange [-40:40]
      set rtics 0,5,40

You may have explicitly unset the xtics

Hello,

I created a polar graph to display wind speed and direction (see attachments).

This worked fine with gnuplot 4.4p3 but since my provider upgraded to gnuplot 4.6p0 there are some display problems:

1) the x grid is not drawn completely to 40. Only if there are actual values that go up to 40
   but I always want to plot the grid like you can see in gnuplot-4.4p3.png

2) There is now a second labeling on the x axis which in this case goes up to 25
   How can I remove that  ?

we experience a strange problem regarding the circle object and vector
graphics output (say pdf term).
it seems the circle is somehow interpolated resulting in a very edgy circle
if e.g. the radius is large as if there is a fixed number of points in the
circle independent of its size.
is there a way to circumvent this problem? it sure is a bother to
post-process images with inkscape :(

nothing happens, and i have no idea how to make some of them dashed and
some not...
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi,

I plotted histograms using commands, for example,
set style histogram rowstacked
plot newhistogram "Label A", 'a' using 1, '' using 2, '' using 3, \
    newhistogram "Label\nLong", 'b' using 1, '' using 2, '' using 3

The two labels show as follows.
                  Label
Label A      Long

The label "Label Long" for the second histogram will overlap the
labels of the x axis.

How to align the two labels at the top to show them as follows?
Label A      Label
                  Long

and time stats are set by your OS. Windows 8 has has two date/time 
fields, creation and modification. I'm guessing that you have your 
view set to creation.
