Adding the \n helps a little, though there is still some overlap. I'll
experiment with the set view and rotate commands and see if I can get better
results.

No.  I wanted to say you should put an actual line break into your
format statment for the y tics.  But that's not 'set timefmt', of
course, but

	set format y "%m-%d\n%Y"

and it doesn't completely fix the problem either --- well, not on
Windows at least.

If you rotate your plot around a little while, in a mouse-enabled GUI
terminal driver like Windows or X11, you'll begin to see more clearly.
The gnuplot axis labels are positioned differently depending on the
angle of the border line on the paper, and thus on the 'set view'
angles.  In particular, the toggle between left, centered and right
justification relative to the reference point, which in turn is given
by extending of the tick mark itself to outside the graph box.

This approach has problems mainly if the tick labels are rather long,
while the view angles are such that the label is centered rather than
left-justified.  That's why choosing a shorter ytic label format should
help.  Choosing a different 'set view' angle should help, too.

And I guess "set ytics rotate" will help quite a lot, if your driver
supports it and your users can accept its results.

dates over to the right. I tried that and it didn't seem to have any effect.
gnuplot just seemed to "eat" the leading spaces.

That's most probably happening because your time labels are a good deal
longer than typical numerical ones, or because your font is larger than
gnuplot thinks it is?  Care giving a reproducible example so others can
debug this more meaningfully?

Anyway: 'set timefmt' to create multi-line labels should help.

You can add the curve, but gnuplot may not be the right tool to compute 
the data to be used in that curve.  Not unless you're willing to jump 
through some hoops with 'set term table' and the 2D 'smooth freq' plot 
option.

Gnuplot has 2 different groups of methods for turning scattered data 
into organized ones: in 2D, you have 'smooth', in 3D, you have 'set 
dgrid3d' mode.  Your task falls into the gap between those, which makes 
it tricky to accomplish.

No.  It contains gnuplot.ini, not wgnuplot.ini.  They're different files
with similar, but distinct purposes.

Of course --- HOME is not a folder, it's an environment variable that 
tells the program where your home directory is.  Read "help startup" 
carefully to learn more about this.

I think I must have asked this half a dozen times already: *what* 
customizations are you talking about?

In a nutshell: wgnuplot.ini only saves what you configured through the 
right-click menus.  What you configured by 'set' commands at the command 
lines, you'll have to put into gnuplot.ini, if you're really sure you 
want it to become the startup behaviour of gnuplot.

Gentlemen,

Whenever  vers. 4.0 is opened, there is a message "no HOME found."

From what  could be learned from "help", this folder contains the
wgnuplot.ini file. That file is in my Windows folder on my C drive. Vers.
4.0 is on my E drive (actually a separate partition of my C drive).

Then, I made up HOME folders with the wgnuplot.ini file in them, putting
them all over on my C and E drives; but that error message, "no HOME found"
still comes up whenever I start(???)

One thing noticed: the option "Update wgnuplot.ini" doesn't seem to work.
Customizations made to the grid do not survive a restart!

Would appreciate any info. Thanks.

[Gnuplot-info] 3D plotting questions

Dear All:

I have been playing with gnuplot in the last week to do a 3D plots from a
data file (scattered plots).
It is working great.  I am hoping to add another curve on the X-Y plane
to reflect the number of points on the Y-Z plane.  So the more points along
the Z-axis, I would reflect that on the X-Y plane perhaps by intensifying
the color.

On a different but related graph, I turned on "set dgrid3d" and did
a "set pm3d at b" which accomplishes that. But "set dgrid3d" does
a weighted average which I don't want to do.  As soon as I remove that,
"set pm3d at b" does not seem to do anything for my curve.

Any tip much appreciated...

First off, this has nothing particular to do with splot.  It's a feature
of how time/date data is parsed in gnuplot.  The strange behaviour is
actually that Test case 1 worked, rather than that case 2 didn't. It's
clearly documented (e.g. in 'help timefmt') that you must always use a
'using' specifier if you're going to use time data.

No.  Nor is that what the error message says, is it?  It says you need a
"full using spec", not that you can't do this at all.

[Gnuplot-info] Different line types using splot

Dear gnuplot-users,

I have a plot where I use the new pm3d feature. I have set the view to map
and would like to plot two lines on top of my contour plot. I tried making
the lines using something like (you should be able to run it yourself
directly):

set terminal postscript eps 20
set output "scatter.eps"
set urange [-2:25]
set vrange [-2:25]
set dummy u,v
set view map
set parametric
splot u,u,0 with lines lt 2

Unfortunately it does not seem like I am able to change the line type to
dashed or dotted when doing it this way. Does anyone have a suggestion that
can solve my problem?

I found that the watcom C compiler is now free to download, and I tried
to compile gnuplot (CVS).
The following files mentioned in the ChangeLog.0 are missing:

Probably --- but did you try *plotting* it along with your data file, or
evaluate it with the same range of x values as you have in your file?
The test to run is:

	plot 'beam-diameter.dat', f(x)

I strongly suspect that will show the problem right away: your startup
values, esp. the one for 'B', are almost certainly way off scale, so
you're evaluating stuff like exp(1000).  Which, on at least some operating
platforms, is considered forbidden by the implementation of exp() in the C
math library, and thus raises the 'undefined value' error you got.

Hi All,

I'm having a spot of bother using gnuplot 4.0 and wondered if any body
could please help. I'm trying to fit a function to a set of data points.
The function is:-

f(x) = A*exp(B*x)

and the fit command is:-

fit f(x) "beam-diameter.dat" via A,B

I get the error message:-

Undefined value during function evaluation

and the log file contains:-

Wed Aug  4 12:02:19 2004


FIT:    data read from "beam-diameter.dat"
        #datapoints = 7
        residuals are weighted equally (unit weight)

function used for fitting: f(x)
fitted parameters initialized with current variable values

BREAK:          Undefined value during function evaluation

The funny thing is I can evaluate f(x) from the command line just fine.
Any ideas anybody?

Dear Durga,
you have several options. As far as I understand you already wrote the data=
=20
you want to plot in two columns in one file, I'll call that one "data.dat".
Then you want to specify some options for formatting.

One way to do this is:
=2D make a subroutine writing the commands you want to use to format the ou=
tput=20
into some parameter file (call it "data.plt")

It might look like:
// start file=20
#
# parameterfile for gnuplot, to plot data.dat
# generated by <me> on <date>
#
set xrange[0:100]
set yrange[0.01:10]
set logscale x
set nokey
set grid
# put here whatever you want to do!
plot "c:/<MYPATH/data.dat
pause -1

// end file

This may easily be enlarged as you might want it to. Please watch out that =
the=20
latest gnuplot versions (4.0 at least) should be configured using a differe=
nt=20
format. It should say "unset key" rather than "set nokey" for example. But=
=20
currently both formats are acceptable.

=2D make a call to gnuplot:
char gnuplotcmd[256];

strcpy(&gnuplotcmd[0], "wgnuplot c:/<MYPATH>/data.plt");

system(gnuplotcmd);

This is old C-style but ought to work with c++. You have to know the name o=
f=20
your gnuplot-binary (I had had different ones so far in M$) and you should=
=20
think about the path to place your data- and plt-files.

ah, my old friend, the redefinition bug - but now I'm happy someone else 
stumbled on this. I solved it by just commenting out the lines in io.h 
(during the compile), for I have no "original linkage" given from 
anything so I cannot say which exact thing is causing the compiler to 
say that.

so if you can come up with something useful solving this I would be very 
happy.

When commenting out the setmode() lines in io.h the compilation should 
work just fine, BUT the application crashes when using gd functions. 
This is - due to the gd author - because VS .NET links against 
MSVCR71.DLL, and not against MSVCRT.DLL, against which the gd.lib is 
linked.

So: if you managed to compile gd with your version of gnuplot, 
pleeeaaaasseeeee tell me how :-) for you HAVE to do something different.

pdf I haven't tested so far .... . if it's linked against the same lib 
as gd.dll it might just crash, too :-(

I thought it would be of value to have a single
makefile.nt for vc6 and .NET, so I tried your change
to /MD. Results follow:
