That's generally impossible to say --- different people's eye find rather
wildly varying things appealing.  De gustibus non est disputandum.

You may want to use 'set format x' to choose your own time axis formatting
rather than letting gnuplot define one for you.  I would think of a
linewidth of 10 (pixels) as somewhat excessive.

Given the following command and data file, what commands can I add to make
my plot more appealing to the eye?  I am creating this (and many more) via
an automated process that must be viewed via a web browser, so I have chosen
png, but if there is a better choice, I'd love to hear it.

Using gnuplot-4.0, and assuming you didn't use the 'blacktext' option:
by using the 'textcolor' options of the commands defining those plot
elements.

I have a datafile. In each line, the first entry is the x-value, the
second the y-value, and the third entry is a label(as a text) which
should be printed next to the corresponding point.

Is it possible to do this with gnuplot? I have not found it in the
documentation.

Where did you pick up the idea that a command called 'set font' existed in
gnuplot?  It doesn't.  What you're setting there is the fontpath, instead,
which is rather a different kettle of letters.  RTFM might have revealed
that a good deal quicker...

The global font choice is made in the 'set terminal' line.  See
'help png' for the details in your particular driver.

You hadn't mentioned before that your 'data plot' was actually an inline
data file ('-').  No, that can't work with the "Print" button, because
that button works by way of the "replot" command.  See "help replot" for
more details.

Only by changing the source code and recompiling.  The relevant setting
is textwin.ScreenSize.y in winmain.c, defaulting to 80.

win32, right mouse click, select "print" from menu.

this works for "plot sin(x)" but not "plot data '-'".

Just the same way you would do it with normal plots.

Please be more specific.  *How* does it fail to work?  One thing to be
careful about: you'll want to re-set 'set size' and 'set origin' to their
original values before you 'set term post ; set output ; set multiplot'

1. how do I print a multiplot plot using commands (not mouse)?
   for the simple plots, I use "set terminal postscript; set output
   'printer-name'".
   I thought that
set terminal postscript
set output 'printer-name'
set multiplot
....
unset multiplot
   would work but it does not!

2. I created a multiplot:

gnuplot> set multiplot
multiplot> set size 0.5,0.5
multiplot> set origin 0,0
multiplot> plot sin(x)
multiplot> unset arrow
multiplot> set origin 0.5,0.5
multiplot> plot cos(x)
multiplot> set origin 0.5,0
multiplot> plot tan(x)
multiplot> set origin 0,0.5
multiplot> plot atan(x)

   then printed it using mouse.
   the result does not fit the paper (I expected automatic scaling).
   unfortunately, this doe not work with data plot.

3. is it possible to add a general title (header? footer?) to a
   multiplot?

5. how do I increase the number of old lines that I can see with scrollbar?

how do I add specific vertical lines on my plot?
e.g.,
plot y=sin(x)
with a vertical line through x=0.234?

set parametric
replot 0.234,t

is not good because,
 - it changes the y range
 - it switches the mode and erases the previous plot
 - the line does not reach the border

what I want is a grid line at specific points (I also want to be able to
assign colors/thickness to them)

I am getting the follwing error message while compiling(ie while executing) gnuplot 4.0.0 on HP-UX 11.23

Hi all,

I'd appreciate some feedback on patch #835235, versions of which have 
been installed in the patch tracker for ~2 years (previous version 
#594815).  This patch enables user-defined minitics, and makes some 
other minitic improvements, such as allowing minitics on axes with 
user-defined tics.  I'd really like this functionality to make it in to 
gnuplot.
