Here's an example of the problem. The attached .dat file created the
attached .png file.

I guess what you mean is to add some spaces into the timefmt to push the
dates over to the right. I tried that and it didn't seem to have any effect.
gnuplot just seemed to "eat" the leading spaces.

That's most probably happening because your time labels are a good deal
longer than typical numerical ones, or because your font is larger than
gnuplot thinks it is?  Care giving a reproducible example so others can
debug this more meaningfully?

Anyway: 'set timefmt' to create multi-line labels should help.
