You must check the residuals, too, i.e. what gnuplot displays as "stdfit", i.e. the sqrt(chisquare/ndf). In the case at hand, the fit to f-1.dat has a much better stdfit figure of ~1.0, compared to the ~2.4 you get for f-2.dat. In a different view at the same result, 'fit' is telling you by these numbers what the variance of the data relative to the fitted function turned out to be, and in particular, that the second fit is indeed worse than the first. gnuplot's "fit" command, unlike some other fitting programs, does not scale parameter errors with "stdfit". You can see the difference if you actually supply data errors to the fit, by scaling them up and down and observing how various fitting programs change their reported results. |

Hi, I met a problem when fitting data. I have two set of data, both of which are supposed to be a single exponential decay function. By setting f(x)=a*exp(-x/T)+b and fitting the data via a,T,b, I got some value for these parameters and it seems reasonable. The problem is, when looking at the plot, it is quite obvious that the second set of data has higher fluctuation than the first set, but the error bar provided by gnuplot was quite close for both fitted T and b for the two set of data. Hi I have downloaded and installed the windows version of gnuplot. I am very interested in using the histogram feature in 4.1. If I open the script for editing and at the head of the file press backspace a couple of times the file works. There is some kind of non printing invisible character at the head of the file. Most odd. :-\ I think I can now work this out in my program, something wrong I'm doing there! Thank you again. |

The following can happen: * The file with it's automatically created contents gives an error. * Copying the script to another file means that it works. * Copying a perfectly working script to the file gives an error. It is as if there is something in the file but not the text itself that causes the error. I am currently writing a piece of software that will write data from
another application and automatically generate a script for gnuplot. I
have run into an obstacle concerning the encoding of file formats.
The errors I get are rather confusing as it appears that gnuplot is
unable to tell line from line. For instance :
set terminal png font '/mnt/win_c/WINNT/Fonts/verdana.ttf' 11
xffffff xclear; reset00 x000000 x000000
^
"work.plot", line 1: invalid color spec, must be xRRGGBB
Which looks nothing like the original script. Copying the contents of a
working script that I have into the file also gives errors. Because of
this I have concluded that my program is writing the script using the
wrong encoding which gnuplot can't read.
Is this consistent with the errors that I'm getting? What form of
encoding should I be using? I'm not entirely sure what I'm using at the
moment, just whatever OpenOffice Basic uses by default.
Does anyone else have experience with such issues when automating
creation of scripts?

See "help vectors" and the documentation about extended "using" specifications. |

Hi, I'm trying to create a visual demonstration of how Principle Components Analysis works in projecting two-dimensional data into one dimension. So I have created some 2D datapoints which lie along a diagonal line, with some Gaussian noise thrown in. Using PCA I can determine the vectors of the principle components. Then I want to plot lines for those vectors, which should bisect one another on the diagram. First question: I'd like those lines to have arrowheads on each end (so that they look like axes). How can I achieve this? Second question: I can create a second 2D dataset which is the projection of the original datapoints onto the principle component, so that they all lie on the line of the principle component. I would like to draw dotted or dashed lines between each original datapoint and its new position. It's not clear to me how I would best achieve this. Can anyone give me any advice? For postscript, you need to edit the generated postscript (or the driver source), or switch to the development version, which has rather more general colour-switching than gnuplot generally has. |

Hi all,
I am trying to plot some graphs using octave and gnuplot.
Now I found out that I can change the line colors with
X resources, so I've set
gnuplot*line1Color: #b30000
gnuplot*line2Color: #00b300
gnuplot*line3Color: #0000ff
gnuplot*line4Color: #000000
This works fine using the x11 terminal, but once I change
to the postscript terminal, this seems to be lost.
Is there a way to change the line colors for the postscript
and png terminals as well?

First, "using 1:2:3:4" in "fit" means you're doing a 3D fit (f(x,y) fitted to [x,y,z]). Fit, by design, can't have x error bars. Make that "using 1:2:4". Second, start-up values for parameters can't be zero. It even says so somewhere below "help fit", IIRC. |
