[Gnuplot-info] contour at base

This is one of the demos:

set contour base
splot x**2*y**3, x**3*y**2

It draws two surfaces and contours both at base.  Now, I would
like to put the contours at different z-levels.  Is there a
way to specify them?  I tried to use set xyplane at <z>.  Both
contours went there.  How to separate them at different
levels?  Thanks for any hint.

it's an error in 'graphics.c'

you can see the difference when plotting without color specification:
plot '-' using 1:2
there everthing is ok.

i'll upload a patch on sorceforge.

[Gnuplot-info] problem specifying fill color for boxes

Hello,

I want to make a bar chart and specify the color with which each bar is
filled. Here's a simplified version of what I have:

set terminal png size 200,200
set style data boxes
set style fill solid 1 border -1
plot '-' using 1:2 lt rgb "blue"
1 0
2 4
3 30
e
--------------------------------

That works ok for me, except that I end up with a 1-pixel wide "shadow"
of blue pixels along the top and right edges of each bar, outside the
black outline. See the attached chart.png or 2x.png (size doubled with
imagemagick). Note also the thin blue line at X=1, where the Y value is 0.

I experimented a bit and determined that not all terminal types behave
this way. For example:

has a shadow:   png, gif, jpeg
without shadow: wxt, svg

So, am I specifying the color correctly? I can't find any other way to
do it.

I'm using Debian's gnuplot package, version 4.2.5-1; I also built 4.2.5
and CVS from source, and they both behave the same way.

That means most of the function values are around 0, equal
amount of them are greater than 0 and less than 0.  Less and
less are large positive, and the same amount of them are large
negative.  I said the "function values" are symmetrically
distributed, not x, y, z.  People use red and green nets in 3D
space to represent positive and negative contour surfaces,
respectively.  Hope this clarifies a bit.

Hi,

I have a 3D function f(x, y, z) in form of a data file of 4
columns x, y, z, and f.  The distribution of the function
value f is symmetrical around 0 following a normal
distribution.  What is the best way to represent this kind of
data in Gnuplot?  Is there any example I can reference?  Some
software uses 3D net to represent contour surfaces.  Thanks
for any suggestions.

i saw that you 'call' a script - so i assume you do it here, too.

there is a note at the end of the help information for the 'call'

you don't have to uninstall anything.
you can download the gnuplot sources into a directory in
your $HOME tree and compile it there and start it from
there - without damaging the original installation.

I'm reluctant to uninstall the synaptic packages and compile from source
because at the moment everything, apart from this conditional plotting, is
working as I want. I don't want to risk running into unforseen problems with
a source compile. For the moment I can live without the conditional plotting
facility. I will revisit this issue at a future date if/when the need for
conditional plotting becomes more pressing.

the gnuplot installation coming with the distribution shows

sorry, my xdata settings were wrong, with gnuplot_4.2.3 i get the
same x-values as you do.

you could try
'set term dumb'
but i don't think that this will change anything.

i'll try to find a ubuntu 9.04 installation.
(this may take some time...)

No, I don't. I still get just the candlesticks with one line plotted at the
zero level and the other line is missing completely.

It is from the distribution repositories, installed via Synaptic. The
installed packages are gnuplot 4.2.4-6, gnuplot-x11 4.2.4-6, gnuplot-doc
4.2.4-6 and gnuplot-nox 4.2.4-6.

  Ok, and the important question: should there be a simpler way inside Gnuplot?

  I think the graph can be easily described. With this data:

Burj Dubai, 818
KVLY-TV mast, 628.8
CN Tower, 553.3
Sears Tower, 527.3
Taipei 101, 509.2

  You could say:
  For each data line, plot y=$2 with title $1, without clearing the screen between plots.


  I have seen a similarity with the reread command (http://www.gnuplot.info/docs/node151.html).

  In fact, the graph I want could be made a specific case of a more general multi-plot graphing system. Imagine this data:

Quadratic, x**2
Five, 5
Sinus, sin(x)

  gnuplot could parse this and plot $2 with title $1, all in the same place (so you would see the solution to x**2=5).

  Could this be useful in general? Is it a good idea to extend gnuplot to handle this?

about how I may solve it.

this is very nice about gnuplot:

plot file using 1:($1>0?$2:1/0) with histeps lt -1 lw 1

The 1/0 is to be read as plot nothing. Can be nested, gives powerful options
