[Gnuplot-info] Polar plot using set pm3d map

Hi, everyone:
I'm a newbie to Gnuplot - been using it one week.  I'm using it to plot data
from the PLUTO astrophysical hydrocode (http://plutocode.to.astro.it/ for
anyone interested).

The data we can't figure out how to plot is stored in a grid as binary data. 
The grid is
  r:  1 to 20 in 100 steps ("x")
  theta: 0 to 2*PI in 100 steps ("y")

We can plot it using, for example
  set pm3d map
  splot "rho.0001.dbl" bin array=100x100 format="%double"

and this puts 'r' on the 'x' axis and 'theta' on the 'y' axis, but this is
plotting on a rectangle, and we'd really like to have it plot as an annulus
- open from 0 to 1, then data as a color map from 1-20 in r, and 0-2PI in
theta.  

It would also be useful to have a grid plotted over the data.

I searched for an solution before posting, but couldn't find anything beyond
some clues that it'll be possible.

I'm happy to send a sample data file if that would be useful (they're about
80kb).

i uploaded a patch on sourceforge yesterday which contains
your suggestion plus another correction (background color
of patterns):

(but for version 4.3 not for 4.2.x)


Perfect Thomas, thank you. Both gif and png terminals work.
Also the jpeg comment is right on.

Can I suggest that this is a bug in the jpeg terminal that I believe could
be fixed by
changing line 1360 in gd.trm (PNG_graphics()) from:

        rgb = gdImageColorAllocate(png_state.image, 255, 255, 255);

to
        rgb = png_state.rgb_table[0];
        rgb = gdImageColorAllocate(png_state.image, (rgb >> 16) & 0xff, (rgb

The 'terminal jpeg' statement is loading the background color entry. Might
as well just use it instead of a fixed white color.

this strange behaviour occurs with the pdf-lib based
pdf-terminal (not with pdfcairo).
and it occurs only when there is enhanced text in the
plot key.
for the first plot the margins are calculated differently
from those of the two other plots.

you can see this when plotting a png-file with
set term png notrue
or
set term png true

BTW, using the jpeg terminal for plots with colored
background gives you a really poor plot quality, due
to the lossy compression algorithm, see

(this plot was done with a patched version of gnuplot)

it is better to use the png or gif terminal.

[Gnuplot-info] Can't set background color in 4.2.5 on jpeg terminal

The following script produces a plot with a black background and a red trace
on gnuplot 4.0.0, but produces a plot with a white background and red trace
on gnuplot 4.5.2.

One from a fresh install on OSX 10.5.7 via Fink. The other from a fresh
install via Macports. (As in both Fink and Macports were completely removed
and both port systems reinstalled from scratch.)

Is this a known bug or a known library configuration issue?

Hello everyone..
I am trying to get a multiplot consisting of 1 row with 3 columns. I set the
size of all three plots in the same manner but the first plot in the row is
smaller than the other two? I can't spot the mistake. Can anyone help?
I am using gnuplot 4.2 Patchlevel 2. Here is my script:

the sequence in 'do_plot()' in 'graphics.c' is:
...
place_objects(.,0,.,.)
place_labels(.,0,.)
place_arrows(0)
then the plot is done, and then
...
place_objects(.,1,.,.)
place_labels(.,1,.)
place_arrows(1)

i see no other way than downloading the source and modifying
and compiling it in order to get the sequence you need.

Thx to the solution from Thomas Sefzick. However, I've also experience another minor problem that I'm pretty sure there must be a solution.

The problem is as follows:

1. set arrow from x1,y1 to x2,y2 nohead lw 0 front
2. set label "A" at x1,y1 center font "Bold,14" textcolor lt 1 front
3. set label "B" at x2,y2 center font "Bold,14" textcolor lt 1 front
4. plot "file.txt" with image

The problem is that the line (in line 1) is drawn on top of the label A and B (line 2 and 3). This happens even though I put line 1 below line 2 and 3. What I want is to draw the label A and B on top of the line such that the order is like this:

1. Label A and B (top order)
2. Line
3. Image (bottom order)

Anyone know the solution plz help.

I have a very basic problem with gnuplot 4.2, searched the doc and the list, but 
found no answer.

I have a ascii data file, two columns, I want to plot the data as points, and also 
plot the value of accumulated data, say the sum of y, or (more exactly) the cumulated 
error for all the points
(sqrt((x-y)*(x-y))

Is there any way to do this without external processing (as described in 6.2 in the 
FAQ) ?

if you insert the line (see 'help call')
print "argc=$# p0=$0 p1=$1 p2=$2 p3=$3 p4=$4 p5=$5 p6=$6 p7=x$7x"
into your called script, then you can see all the arguments.

your problem seem to be the double quotation marks you
obviously made out of 2 apostrophes:
gnuplot> call 'calltest.gp' ''89AZ-21'' '0'
argc=7 p0= p1=89 p2=AZ p3=- p4=21 p5= p6=0 p7=xx

with real double quotes it works:
gnuplot> call 'calltest.gp' "89AZ-21" '0'
argc=2 p0=89AZ-21 p1=0 p2= p3= p4= p5= p6= p7=xx

I'm running into a problem calling a script with an index notation in it, and
with incomplete string recognition/pasing.

1st the incomplete string passing:

Here are the relevant lines from my script file:

set terminal postscript eps enhanced color
set output "$1.ps"
set title "$1" 
plot "Data.txt" using 2:7:(100*($$15-.60)) with points pointtype 6 pointsize
variable

I've doubled the $ within the using command to pull column data from the
file as the help call says to -no problems there.

Here is my call command:

call 'index.script' ''89text-1''

It works, except it only passes the 89 to the file name and title.

So the output file is called 89.ps instead of 89text-1.ps 
which is a problem, because eventually I'll have a -2 and -3 etc.

(and, the help says the parameters start at 0- this seems to show they start
at 1, is the help correct?  If i start with $0 it doesn't pass the string at
all)

--2nd problem--  it doesn't like passing a parameter to an index command

plot "AllData.txt" using 2:7:(100*($$15-.60)) index $2 with points pointtype

are you using some mathematical constructs, like subscripts or superscripts,
in the title or in labels without enclosing them in $'s ?

I am using the epslatex terminal so I can include figures in my LaTeX
document.  But I am getting an error message from LaTeX under some
conditions.
I have attached a minimal example hoping someone can assist me.  I have two
gnuplot figures included in this LaTeX file, one of them I am just plotting
the simple "test" command.  There, everything works fine.  The second figure
is a real world example.  I am plotting data from a file and I am fitting
that data to a line.  When I run latex on this example I get the error
message copied at the bottom of the email.  Is this a bug or is it something
I have done wrong?

Thank you--I didn't know where in the source to look. I found your
description of the problem:

...and I made a patch (attached). It does seem to have an effect on the
svg terminal, though, and I don't know what would be correct.
