running version 4.3 demos with version 4.2.5 doesn't work sometimes.
there are improvement and new features in version 4.3 which can't be
found in older versions.

the awk script is to be used to separate isolines, a
structure like
x1 y1 z1
x1 y2 z2
...
x1 y99 z99
x2 y1 z100
x2 y2 z101
...
x2 y99 z198
x3 y1 z199
....
is assumed.

but your data isn't sorted at all, so there are blank
lines added nearly everywhere.

you need to sort your data first.

[Gnuplot-info] pm3d does not draw properly

Hi,

I want to plot the following data in pm3d color map:

Using the following commands

set pm3d map; set surface;
splot '<awk -f ~/bin/addblanks.awk cut08.txt' using 1:3:5;

(with the addblanks.awk script from the gnuplot FAQ), the result is some
strange triangles and does not correspond to the picture I get using normal
splot.

Any help is welcome, thanks

'sprintf' returns a string, you don't have to enclose it in quotes.

That's because your web server (for good reasons) runs subprocesses in 
an environment configured considerably more restrictively than a 
logged-in user's interactive shell.  Apparently one such restriction 
applies to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

I'm afraid you're asking the wrong tool.  The libgd.so your gnuplot 
binary uses if you run it interactively would be found by asking the 
dynamic linker about it.  On Linux, I think that's still done by

	ldd gnuplot

Hello all,

I have a shell script that extracts some data from log files, then calls
gnuplot to create a graph using the jpeg terminal. When I run the script
from the terminal, I am able to create the graph, but when I run the script
from a web application running on an apache http server 2.2 (on the same
machine), I see the error message "gnuplot: error while loading shared
libraries: libgd.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory". I've installed gnuplot 4.2,  gd-2.0.35, libpng-1.2.37,
zlib-1.2.3 and libjpeg-v7, but when I do slocate libgd, I can only find
/usr/lib/libgdm.so.2. Why would this allow the script to create the graph
when called from the terminal, but not the web application?

Sounds good.  The only thing is I have multiple lines I want to generate and so do something like:

Plot file1 using, file1 using, file1 using...  then repeat it again for the second files, etc...

Does this mean Linux will have to re-cat the files each time or is there a way to tell gnuplot to only do it once?  These are big files, typically 2-5MB with hundreds of columns in them and I worry about efficiency. I do know doing it the way I current do is very fast especially since the first time I read a file it gets cached and I'm on not sure what happens with 'cat'.  I'd think the results do not get cached and would have to be regenerated for each line I want to plot.  For some plots there can be as many as 16 lines.

Hi, I would like to plot segments which are not linked. For example I 
have this kind of file (with lots of lines...): x1_1 y1_1 x1_2 y1_2 x2_1

segments :

I hear you but that's not really practical in my case because then my script would need to clean up the temporary files in between gnuplot runs and then I'd also lose the benefit in having the files in cache in case I want to replot them.  Having one point missing from my plots is not that much of a hardship and not really that big a deal.  Gnuplot is far too powerful a tool to worry about a missing data point that's really there, just not connected to its neighbor.

I think I understand what's happening but I'm wondering if there are any 
'tricks' to get around this.

I have 2 files that represent 2 days worth of data I want to plot with 
data samples 10 seconds apart.  The first plot ends at 00:00:50 and the 
second starts at 00:01:00 and my plot command  is of the form:

plot file1using, file2 using

As expected I get one line that ends at 00:00:50 and a second that 
begins at 00:01:00 and I'm wondering if there might be some way to get 
gnuplot to treat this a one contiguous file.  If there is a 'trick', 
could you let me know if it will work for all recent versions of 
gnuplot, say from 4.0 forward, or would I need the latest version?

plot your data again with the yrange interval added to
or subtracted from the data:

dy=3
set yrange [0:0+dy]
plot "datafile" using 1:2:(l*cos($3)):(l*sin($3)) with vectors, \
"" using 1:($2+dy):(l*cos($3)):(l*sin($3)) with vectors, \
"" using 1:($2-dy):(l*cos($3)):(l*sin($3)) with vectors

to get the same color for all plots add 'linetype' options.

[Gnuplot-info] bug in version 4.2.5?

apparently there is a bug in version 4.2.5 (see

How can I apply this patch on a macintosh (I installed gnuplot via Macport.)
Should I recompile it ? How?

a) is reamaining.
If I try to set up the key by
'set key on at 31,0.5 box'
the box appears at the upper right corner. That's fine so far, but now the
plotting area occupies all space from left to right again. So the box is not
on the outside of it. Do you have another suggestion? Shall I upload a
picture somewhere?
