Of course it does.  Space doesn't just come from nowhere.

Not really.  But you can use the 'size' option of your terminal driver. 
  That's what it's for.

[Gnuplot-info] Problems using 'set key on outside box'

Hi,

I've got some problems putting my key box outside the plotting area by using
'set key on outside box'.
a) The box of the plotting area and the box of the key overlap - not in the
gnuplot window, but when I use 'set terminal pslatex' to include the plot in
my diploma thesis. I'd like to have some margin between it. Is there a
possibility to add it? Or do I have to use 'set key at ...' ? Or manual
editing of the resulting .tex file?
b) When the key moves from inside to outside of the plotting area, the width
of the latter one shrinks (I don't now how to put it. When the key is
inside, the plotting area has e.g. 400_px x xyz_px. When the key moves to
the outside of the plotting area, the plotting area and the key together
have a width of 400_px, maybe 300 for the plotting area and 100 for the key.
I still would like to have 400 for the plotting area *and* 100 for the key).
Maybe this can be done by adding 'set size 1.2,1'?

Actually, no, pgnuplot is not supposed to help with that.  pgnuplot 
pipes its input go wgnuplot.  There's nothing it could do to pick up any 
stdout output --- wgnuplot simply doesn't have any stdout.

ok, i managed to find a windows system with gnuplot 4.2

so, wgnuplot doesn't deal with pipes, but pgnuplot should,
but i don't get anything on stdout.

anyway, you are searching for something which works
everywhere, so that's what i found to be compatible
even with wgnuplot:

write a file 'test.plt':
   save 'test.log'
   exit

and then run gnuplot:
   wgnuplot test.plt

this will create the file 'test.log' which you may open
and parse.

The 'save filename' trick does not work on windows, at least not with v4.2.  All it does is run gnuplot.  I don't plan to lose too much sleep over this one, but rather was just wondering if there are any tricks I might have missed.

[Gnuplot-info] how to tell gnuplot version and other things from a script

I have a script that uses gnuplot to do its plotting and needs to be 
able to run with different versions.  It runs primarily in a linux 
environment but occasionally on windows too.  In the case of windows I 
have not been able to figure out the gnuplot version but on linux 
discovered I could:

echo show version | gnuplot

and parse the output.  But I just tried this with gnuplot V4.2 and 
discovered that while it works, I get a warning that it can't open the X 
display and this causes my script to hang for a long time and is not the 
behavior on earlier versions and doesn't seem to make sense anyway since 
not everyone runs gnuplot on X terminals.

The second thing I'm trying to do is determine the size font a png 
terminal will use and I found I could do this with:

(echo set terminal png; echo show terminal) | gnuplot

but again I get that X11 warning.

Finally, even if my terminal type is X, if I run the commands from a 
script they hang for awhile but work fine on earlier versions.

That said, my question(s) come down to:
- what is the best/most efficient way to get the gnuplot versions and 
png font sizes from a script?
- less important but still something that would be nice is to have a way 
to do this in a windows environment.

I've been playing around a little more with different versions and it looks like this problem is with 4.2.0 but 4.2.1 forward seems to be ok.  However I am still interested in finding out if there is a way to tell tell a gnuplot version from a script on a windows platform.

Yeah, but my data files are fine, like tmp1.dat and tmp2.dat. And  
anyway I can plot them together if I use lines for the first data  
file, points for the second and linespoints for the third. The  
problem is that I can't plot together 2 or more data files together  
WITH LINES.

Then the problem is in your data file.  For example, there is
an empty line between every other line.

Try this:

tmp1.dat
1 4
2 5
3 6

tmp2.dat
1 7
2 3
3 5

tmp3.dat
1 3

2 4

3 2

plot 'tmp1.dat' t '1' w l 1, 'tmp2.dat' t '2' w l 2,
'tmp3.dat' t '3' w l 3
shows the first two curves, but not the third, and no error
message.

How exactly do you send this to gnuplot?  In a script file, or 
interactively?  Do you get any error or warning messages?

And what gnuplot version is that, anyway.  On what platform?

That cannot happen.  Are you *sure* your second and third data file 
contain data actually plottable as lines?

Hi everyone,
I've a problem trying to plot several data files with lines, no matter of
the terminal. I've to plot some curves from data files with a command  like:
>plot  "r0_d0.dat" ls 1 ti "z = 0" with lines,\

> "r2_d0.dat" ls 3 ti "z = R_{max}/4" with lines

Only problem is that when I look at the output it shows only the first
curve, the key, the labels etc. but nothing about the 2nd and 3rd curve.
Note that is I choose to plot the 2nd curve with points and 3rd with
linespoints this work... And note that if I try to plot something like

when started in batch mode ('$ gnuplot t.plt') gnuplot
expects the data to be contained in the file t.plt when
plotting from the special filename '-'.

'-' is standard input in interactive mode only.

you may switch to interactive mode after executing
all the commands in 't.plt' with '$ gnuplot t.plt -'
but switching is done after the last command is
executed completely.

you may combine commands and data before piping
them into gnuplot:

(cat t.plt t.in; echo "e"; cat t.in; echo "e") | gnuplot
