[Gnuplot-info] Conditional plotting

If I have a CSV file with several columns of data running to thousands of
lines, how would I plot a discontinuous line plot of data in column 2
dependent on a value in column 1? For example, I would only want to plot
those data in column 2 if the corresponding line value in column 1 is
greater/less than/equal to a given value.

starting with gnuplot 4.3-cvs there are new operators
'=' and ',' in expression syntax, that means, one can use
them for the 'using' modifier inside a 'plot' command.

defining labels must be done before plotting, but access
to the data you don't have before plotting, so filling a variable
with some value from the datafile can only be done
when plotting (but then it's too late to define a label).

one solution is to do a dummy plot by plot 'nothing to
nowhere', by doing this you can set the variable.
(plotting to nowhere can be done by specifying
'set out "/dev/null"' on unix systems, or, plotting
nothing can be done by printing a table to
the terminal window or text window)
then you define the title, label, ....
and afterwards you do the real plot.

gnuplot> set table
gnuplot> plot 'datafilename' us 0:($0==0?(x1=$3):$3)

Unfortunately, gnuplot 4.0 is what is installed at work and I don't have any
say as to what software is available. So, like it or not, I'm stuck with it.

to store the first data point in a particular column so I can place a label
at that point.  Can someone show me how to do this?
Small example:

I don't use gnuplot very often, so don't know anything beyond the basics.
I've recently been asked to modify a plot that I created using gnuplot a
while back

Heres the script

set terminal postscript enhanced color

set y2label "Population in 2" tc lt 2 font "Helvetica,15"

set xtics nomirror font "Helvetica,12"
set tics out
set style data histogram
set style histogram cluster gap 1
set style fill solid border -1
plot "final.csv" using 2:xtic(1) title col fs solid lc rgb "blue", '' using

When I try to run it, I get the following error

I am using gnuplot 4.0. I think that at one time, I was using gnuplot 4.1
(I've changed computers since) which I guess might cause some problems. I've
never had this error before so am a bit confused.


Also, I'm not sure how to specify the colours of the bars. Is the code below
correct?

plot "final.csv" using 2:xtic(1) title col fs solid lc rgb "blue", '' using
3 title col fs solid lc rgb "pink" axes x2y2

simpler ways - 'outside' gnuplot, maybe, but 'inside', i don't think so,
because you read y-values in, which are then to be used as constant
functions after reading them in, that's somehow a 'misuse' of gnuplots
plotting mechanism.

'outside' gnuplot, e.g.:

load "< awk --field-separator \",\" 'BEGIN {temp = sprintf(\"plot\")} {if
(NR>1) temp = temp \",\" ; temp = temp $2 \" title \" \"\\\"\" $1 \"\\\"\"}
END{print temp}' ts.dat"

i am plotting some graphs with:

set ylabel "Amplituide/dB ------->"
set grid
plot file index 0 using ($1):($2) title "A)Band1" with lp,\

      file index 2 using ($1):($2) title "C)Band3" with lp

but my X-labelling is cut off.
How to correct this ?
How to make some extra space around my graph ?

It's not LFS (Linux from scratch) there but Suse 10.3 octave 3.0.5 and gnuplot
4.2.

I can find style only two times and that  seems  not  corrupted  to  me.  Even
commenting them out does not help.

I  agree if there's garbage comming in the error messages will be problematic.
But so far it's only gnuplot/octave that has problems with my 2.6.22.7 kernel-
pipe. Is there any way to monitor what happens there?
I've  piped  loads of stuff so far even mplayer pcm data of more than 100MB to
oggenc and there was never a problem. The kernel  nicely  made  mplayer  sleep
while the pipe was full and oggenc was bussy encoding.

Yes I know. It's another story. LFS is not so easy to upgrade...

As far as I understand the problems here:
It is up to octave to make sure it puts proper code into the pipe and tell the
user if it can't because of wrong sized arrays or such.
The kernel is supposed to pass correctly what comes into the pipe to  gnuplot.
If gnuplot does not get proper code, it should complain as best as it can.

Hi, I look for orientation on how to plot a graph I have seen no examples for.

  Imagine you have this data consisting of tower_name+tower_height:

Burj Dubai, 818
KVLY-TV mast, 628.8
CN Tower, 553.3
Sears Tower, 527.3
Taipei 101, 509.2

  I want a graph with 5 horizontal lines, each at the height specified by the second parameter.
  Similar in nature to this graph: https://eshu.ubuntu-eu.org/cgi-bin/munin-cgi-graph/ubuntu-eu.org/eshu/smart_sdb-month.png

  I could do manually: plot 818 title "Burj Dubai", 628.8 title "KVLY-TV mast", 553.3 title "CN tower", 527.3 title "Sears Tower", 509.2 title "Taipei 101"
  But I want the data to be read from a file.

  Can this be done with a gnuplot command?

Did you check that you're using the same versions of everything (OS, 
octave, gnuplot) on those two different computers?

There really can't be.  For starters, we're talking about three separate 
issues with different likely reasons.  So there's no "the" cause for 
gnuplot to inform you about.
