Thanks for the hint with the color. In my script I had concatenated x, y, z in the wrong direction such that size(color,1) was not the same as size(x,1). I don't get the errors due to an empty color spec though. Strangely on a different computer I sometimes still get the gnuplot errors. Could it be there is some check missing about the color vector fitting to the data? It would be nice if the gnuplot error were more meaningfull to help find the cause for it. I couldn't get the hg sources compile because my autoconf is 2.59 and lowering the requirement in configure.in caused configure to be unhappy about my g77. Since I for now I don't need them I'll wait for a new release including a configure already. Because the thread below says it's a gnuplot issue I post this here as well:
In octave I'm having troubles with coloured sactter3. If I do:
x=rand(100,1)
y=rand(100,1)
z=rand(100,1)
scatter3 (x, y, z);
scatter3 (x, y, z, [], 'b');
scatter3 (x, y, z, z);
scatter3 (x, y, z, 50);
all is fine (just the spotsize is not changed) but with:
scatter3 (x, y, z, 50, [], 's');
scatter3 (x, y, z, 50, []);
I get this multiple times:
gnuplot> 0.148456192084311 0.601135888459943 0.284623384973014
^
line 400: invalid command
gnuplot> e
^
line 400: invalid command
with:
gnuplot_binary ("tee octave.gp | gnuplot ");
I get:
tee: standard output: Broken pipe
tee: write error
and some time later the gnuplot errors again.
Same problem with:
cat octave.gp | gnuplot
Inside gnuplot:
load "octave.gp"
"#000000"lc rgb "#000000"lc rgb "#000000" ;
^
"octave.gp", line 3088: duplicated arguments in style specification

assuming it's a gnuplot problem but since the other scatter3 commands work I'm not sure about that.
I also sometimes get a proken pipe error when quitting less showing the 100 random numbers.
I've octave 3.0.5, gnuplot 4.3 patchlevel 0, LFS
octave.gp.bz2 is attached. I wonder why there are so many splot commands in it. It seems to me it's supposed to plot the data mutiple times.

am satisfied of the result but there is still something I can't understand.
First of all I would like to point out that in your example,

The rest of the problem, as much as I could deduce, lies probably in the
type of font one uses: in facts I would like to use LaTeX font cmr10.ttf,
and it seems iso_8859_1 encoding it is not totally supported.
I tried to experiment some of the characters listed on the standard
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8859-1) within the
> set term png enhanced font "cmr10"
settings
For some amongs them I get the corresponding glyph (as they are called in
the jergon ;-) ), but for others just an empty square box. I tried also the
usual Symbol.ttf font but same story.
Hereafter i post a possible workaround, mixing the font that I desire for
labels (cmr10.ttf) and another that allows me to display the Angstrom
caracter \305 (luxirr.ttf):

For example, if I do 'splot 0.2*cos(u)*cos(v), cos(u)*sin(v), sin(u)', the 3D oval swings from one side of my window to the other when I rotate it. If I do 'splot 0.1*cos(u)*cos(v), cos(u)*sin(v), sin(u)', the object swings in and out of the window. Can I specify a rotation center? My sphere is now close to round. The problem is that its vertical size keeps changing when I spin the sphere or resize the window. Could someone give a hint? Yes, no problems with Unix commands on OSX. It was a bit complicated,
because I have the line number as a variable which is changing in a
reread loop after pausing a while. I got this with (the variable "a"
is the line number)
command = sprintf("head -n %d $myfile | awk '{print $1}'", a)
zeit = system(command)
Now I could say
print zeit
and the first column of the line is printed in the Terminal window.
When I tried to see this in the plot window with
set label 1 zeit at ...
or
plot ... title zeit
it prints indeed, but it doesn't overwrite the previous print when the
plot is reread. Instead it prints the values one under each other. I
don't know if this can be achieved?

Yes, yes, I am aware of this feature mentioned in the documentation, nevertheless I actually hoped that the axes could be hidden by the object being plotted. It is probably not common in scientific use but it could look pretty just for visualisation needs. For example, I have tried to produce following figure using gnuplot: http://www.nabble.com/file/p23659362/img.gif The sphere could be coloured using pm3d and the axes are shown just for comparison and demonstration of the corresponding dimensions. So, I suppose according to your reply that there is no way how to achieve it automatically? I mean without the need to e.g. simulate the axes by "set arrow" command and place the labels and {x|y|z}tics by hand... darwinports. This worked, but I'm not sure if I can install 4.3 via
Darwinports.
For the moment it would be sufficient to print my first column in the
Terminal window. Can I do this with gnuplot 4.2? I tried 'print $1'
but this doesn't work.

Hi, I have examined recently following simple sequence of gnuplot commands: set ticslevel 0 set border 31 splot [-1:1][-1:1][0:2] 1 According to the documentation, only the bottom and left vertical border lines should be displayed but the resulting graph contains also some fragments of the other three vertical border lines. Is there any way how to get rid of them? there are no 2nd x and y axes for 'splot', see http://www.gnuplot.info/docs/node67.html x2tics and y2tics don't make much sense, they would be hidden by the object plotted. and, in order to have the axis tics and labels visible all the time, the tics are always drawn at the axes which are in front. depending on the viewing angles - e.g. for a plot rotated by 180° - these may be the 2nd axes. sorry, i forgot to mention, you need gnuplot 4.3-cvs. version
