[Gnuplot-info] Why would gnuplot ignore my first data point in a file?

Hi  -- I've been a long-time user of gnuplot, but am baffled at
why it's consistently ignoring the first line from all my data input files?

I am using the current release version, 4.4.0.

My data file is:


50534   0.01   2048   4   2   1          42331740.77

My gnuplot command script is where I just want to plot the 2nd column as X
and 7th column as Y.

Any ideas -- my script is below??

Hello!

I have a problem, long to explain, but not complex to understand:

I am trying to plot with image a data matrix with the following
properties:
- The valid data goes from 0 to 1.
- There exist invalid data, which has a z value of 2.
- The palette range will be [0:0.01]

I want 29 colors to be used in the palette, and so, I use this script:

With this script, all the valid data from 0.01 to 1 will have the last
color of the palette, which is OK, but the invalid data will have that
color too, but I would like those data points to have another color. Is
there any simple way to achieve this, like skipping the points with
certain z values?

As I could not find a simple solution, I have tried the next more or
less complex approach which "almost" works:
- Redefine the palette range to include the invalid data.
- Redefine the palette with its real range values to have the same
colors than before for the same values.

Where the parameters "a" to "c1" has the next value:
0. + 0.01 * i / 29.
i=0, 1, 2, ...

The problem with this is that not all colors are used, but I have found
that if the palette range is smaller, it works OK, so maybe is a gnuplot
bug or limitation. Anyway, I cannot do the range smaller, as there would
be valid data with the color of invalid data (in the example there is no
valid data from 0.01 to 1, so it is perfect, but not always will be this
way).
This would be the script for the limited range that works:

set cbrange [0:.05]
set palette model RGB defined ( a "#8b0000", b "#8b0000", b "#a80000", c

No, Adrian. I have already set the xrange correctly. What I need is the
output that gives me a squeezed version of the plot. Imagine you have this
figure. Now compress the x-axis such that we get Figure 2 as shown below. I
would like to keep the same xrange but squeeze it.

Sometimes I want to move around figures after I zoomed in, but I can't find the way to do it in gnuplot, right now my solution is 'p' back to the last drawing and select the other zoom region. Is there more efficient way ?

I tried this delay inserting but it didn't help. 
Interestingly, the 2nd multiplot freezes always 
after the 1st subplot drawn.
I've uploaded the full input for two multiplots 
here: http://files.mail.ru/Z8VDCG (50k bzipped, 
kept until June 18).

Could it be not the input volume but input 
format, rather? I'm using the precise 
calculations, could those throw the gnuplot off?

What would you advise here? A switch to some 
other plotting app or lib, possibly?

Don't worry.  The license is about about _copies_ of the source code, 
not data produced by it.

That tends to be caused by sending data faster than gnuplot can process 
them.  Pipes have a limited buffering capability.  Once the producing 
app gets ahead of gnuplot by more than that buffer's size, things tend 
to break.

We've had reports indicating that it sometimes helps to insert a little 
delay in the external program that drives gnuplot.

I'd like to create a waterfall or fence plot using data stored in a text
file. The data would be stored in this format,

If this were a 2d graph each row would be a separate graph, with the number
equal to the y value and its index in the row equal to the x value.  I'd
like to stick them all in one graph with different depths/offsets.  I have
studied the examples shown here
http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo/surface1.html, but this is a little too
complex/confusing for me and does many extra things I don't require.  If
someone could post a more simplified example or a way to accomplish this I'd
appreciate it.

Well, as to this question, my point is that gnuplot is a powerful
software in ploting figures, but it is not a software for numerical
processing.
I would like to normmalized the y axis data in other software (GNU Octave,
for example) and then plot
it in gnuplot.

Hello all

I'm trying to plot the data piped in from another (calculation) app.
The app produces three datasets of interest per cycle and is wrapping
those with the multiplot instructions.

With small volumes of data everything works as intended. Now, if
using, e.g., 1000 points per set the first multiplot shows okay, but
the second multiplot isn't finished, and gnuplot sort of gets stuck
after the first subplot drawn. Plotting with gaps (e.g., 'every 2')
doesn't help.

The sheer volume of the data isn't the cause, however. I've tried to
filter some points out (*before* the gnuplot sees them), and some
input files go through okay, and some, although smaller, don't.

I'm attaching two gnuplot input files, with data for two frames
(multiplots) each, one that shows okay, and one that stops. Both are
filtered down from the same (even bigger) file.

The gnuplot here is 4.2 patchlevel 5 and 6 (different machines).

This is really what i want.
I tested the codes you posted and I got the right figure in another PC with
gnuplot 4.2.6 installed.
I think the failure in my Debian GNU/Linux system results form that I am
using an old version gnuplot.

You can't, short of not having such a big entire file in the first place.

Text files absolutely _have_ to be parsed to find any particular 
position whose definition depends on the context of the file itself 
(e.g. a particular line number, the n-th occurence of a double blank 
line, ...).

Hello, every one!
Here is my question:
  I have a matrix data file (data in rows and collums),
  and I successfully got a contour figure by the following commands:
  
  set pm3d map
splot 'matrix.dat' matrix

Well, I got the figure as follows:

So, what can I do if I wanna plot a line in this contour figure?
(I wanna plot the line where z=0 in the x y plane)

OK so the use of "index" is not like the use of fseek in C. So how can I
advance to a particular data set in a file of multiple data sets without
having to parse the entire file each time? That is, how can I do something
like a fseek?

I think gnuplot, like most good software, truncates integer divisions. You
might instead try:

plot ( (1.0/373.0) - (8.314/40000.0) * log( (2*59)/(x*1013250) + 1 ) )**-1
