Just did a quick check on win2k here, works ok for me. Used the installers for win32. The main problem here is: it's more of an issue with EeePC than it is with Tux Paint. I believe the EeePC ships with Xandros Linux out-of-the-box, but I know people put Debian and/or Ubuntu on them. Package management in Ubuntu and Debian are fairly straight forward, with GUI tools like KDE's "Adept", so in the end it's a packaging issue. I encourage people to package Tux Paint for as many platforms as possible, so hopefully that's covered. :) With that said... I saw Tux Paint on an EeePC (4G?) running Debian or Ubuntu (not the stock Xandros). The launcher for Tux Paint caused it to appear in a window that was about the size of the screen, so it didn't fit well (with the menu at the bottom and window titlebar and border). So perhaps it might be good to have Tux Paint try to detect the current resolution and do something more sane when it's launched at that SAME resolution in Windowed mode. Something like: --fullscreen-if-wont-fit (let it switch to fullscreen if the display is the same size as Tux Paint and we were about to go into windowed mode) and: --smaller-if-wont-fit (drop down to a smaller resolution... ah, but what?) -bill! |

I want a one click wonder that will install TuxPaint on a eeePC, kid friendly, no geek cap needed. Any idea's? For a start is is for 18,000 eeePC's- The idea is that it goes on 1.25M of the beasties. And TuxPaiint is not all ... Penguin Racer... But TuxPaint is best. If you do it with TuxPaint, you can do it with anything. You can see, I am intrigued as to the solution. Malc |

Oops - I sent this too soon, as I'm still downloading the stamps files from John. If you get a 'permission denied' trying to download them, then try again later, I haven't finished downloading them yet (or at least haven't had time to make them accessible). Sigh. :) Too big of a hurry, sorry. -bill! |

John Popplewell has put together builds of what will soon become Tux Paint 0.9.20, for people to beta-test. This includes a new, separate release for older versions of Windows (95/98/ME), which has slightly reduced functionality than the release for newer versions of Windows (XP/2000/Vista). (In other words, a few of the new features -- such as vector-graphics-based Stamps support -- are disabled.) This is, of course, better than not supporting older versions of Windows at all! :^) You can download the builds from here: ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/win32/ If you're running Windows, and have time to test this out, please do, and let us know if you run across any problems. The changes (so far) since 0.9.19 are listed here: http://tuxpaint.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/tuxpaint/tuxpaint/docs/CHANGES.txt?revision=1.557 (It's everything listed below "2008.June.17 (0.9.20)" and above "2008.February.25 (0.9.19)", of course.) The files are: * tuxpaint-0.9.20cvs-2008-06-17-win32-installer.exe Installer for newer Windows (XP, 2000, Vista) * tuxpaint-0.9.20cvs-2008-06-17-win32.zip ZIP version for newer Windows (XP, 2000, Vista) * tuxpaint-0.9.20cvs-2008-06-17-win9x-installer.exe Installer for older Windows (95, 98, ME) * tuxpaint-0.9.20cvs-2008-06-17-win9x.zip ZIP version for older Windows (95, 98, ME) * tuxpaint-stamps-2008.06.17-win32-installer.exe Stamps Collection - installer for all Windows * tuxpaint-stamps-2008.06.17-win32.zip Stamps Collection - ZIP version for all Windows You'll want just two files. Choose whether you want Installer or ZIP versions of Tux Paint. Then download the appropriate Tux Paint for your version of Windows ('win9x' for old, 'win32' for new), and download Tux Paint Stamps. Once we make an official release, new Windows builds will be released, and will be available from the website, as per usual! Enjoy, -- -bill! I saw this mentioned on the SchoolForge mailing list, and thought the parents and teachers out on this tuxpaint-users list might be interested. Here's the site for the 10th International Digital Print Open Competition/Exhibition at the New York Hall of Science: http://www.asci.org/artikel981.html Best of luck. Joel Guidelines can be found here: http://www.asci.org/artikel980.html It's unclear to me what age ranges they expect submissions from, but considering I saw this posted to SchoolForge, I'm guessing K-12 is appropriate. (You may want to contact ASCI first, to confirm...) Good luck! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

How does Windows see the device? I would imagine it would not need to act much different from a plain pointer input device (like a mouse or trackball). Is it (going to) connect(ed) by USB? The Koala Pad on the Atari 8-bit acted as two Paddle controllers (potentiometers), one representing X, the other Y. The two buttons on the Koala Pad acted as Paddle fire buttons (digital on/off). Once upon a time I had a little device a friend and I made which allowed me to connect Atari Paddle controllers to a PC's joystick port (the kind you used to find on sound cards like the SoundBlaster). I imagine I could have used the X/Y/Fire of the joystick input on the PC (say, under Linux) to utilize the Koala Pad. Unfortunately, at the time, I had no Koala Pad. And these days, PCs don't have the old-style analog joystick input. I've got a StellAdapter (Atari video game/computer system controller to USB converter), but I don't recall if it supports Paddle inputs... it may only do joystick (which were 4 digital values on the Atari). > What hardware features(buttons) do you think might help to put on the > tablet? Other than a plain transparent board? Honestly, I don't know! I think keeping it simple would be the best and most flexible route. Have you looked at the Digital Arts and Crafts Studio's drawing tablet? It includes an assortment of buttons for choosing colors, tools, etc. I can map most of those to controls within Tux Paint, but really, Tux Paint can do so much more than the DACS software can (in some ways, at least), so those buttons are more of a burden. :) What do others out here think of Shin-Chin's device? PS - I'd happily accept a prototype to play with. :^D -bill! |

Dear all: I found Tuxpaint to be a very good software for kids, but it might be a bit difficult for kids to use mouse to draw on TuxPaint, I have been working on a technology to offer an economic tablet for kids. For the prototype, you could see the video demo at http://www.imareader.com/coopaint.html The tablet indeed has several distinct features from a Wacom tablet, such as . Fully transparent; . No sensor board ; . Large area; . Low cost. I plan to make a product using the technology, but think I had better to do some market research before doing. Do you think if parents would buy a $39.99 tablet for kids to explore their creativity using TuxPaint? I know this is a E-mail list for users, not for market research. But since most of you are experts in TuxPaint, so I hope that you don't mind I ask such a question here. Best regards, Shih-Chin |

Hi! I'm currently working on the Italian version of TuxPaint, right now I'm updating the Stamps translation. While updating Tux Paint, I installed the latest available version of the stamps, and in my opinion it's a little messy, many "kids favourite" stamps of the previous versions look missing (the rubber duck, the toilet...), and there are too many tombstones!!! Is it possible to "merge" the new version of the stamps with the older one? Or uninstall the current version of the stamps and use the older one with v. 0.9.19 of TuxPaint? have a nice day Simona |

I recently discovered the "Free Knowledge, Free Technology" (FKFT) conference, a new, international conference whose tagline is: "Education for a free information society". It takes place between July 15th and 17th, 2008, in Barecelona, Spain. Here's their announcement: http://fkft.eu/en/announcement I contacted them to ask whether it was too late to have Tux Paint, or Tux4Kids in general, participate, and they said no, and encouraged us to do so. They recently extended the deadline for their Call for Papers, but even so, the deadline is in TWO DAYS: April 30th. See this page: http://fkft.eu/en/CFP and: http://fkft.eu/en/submissions Would anyone here be willing to participate in this event, to talk about Tux Paint, and/or TuxMath and/or Tux Typing? (Two years ago, I lucked out, and found someone in France who was able to go to the Libre Graphics Meeting and represent Tux Paint for me. :) ) Thanks in advance, -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |
