I discovered something called "Tux Paint Plus" today. I ran anti-virus scanning software (clamav's "clamscan" tool) against it, and it didn't find anything, so I launched the program. (I used "Wine" under Linux.) It appears that this software installs not just Tux Paint (it's very likely that it's just regular Tux Paint, and nothing special -- I haven't tried yet, though), but also some kind of 'search toolbar' in ones web browser. Doing a quick search on Google for "open source plus toolbar," I came across an EULA (end user license agreement) for something called "InfraRecorder Plus" that has the same wording as the one I saw in "Tux Paint Plus." InfraRecorder is a CD/DVD writing tool for Windows that, like Tux Paint, is released under the GNU GPL. So it looks like someone (whomever is responsible for this toolbar) is grabbing open source software, wrapping this 'toolbar' software around it, and re-releasing it. Does anyone out here have any additional comments or info about this? It's not clear whether they are breaking the rules of the GPL (it seems unlikely, as the EULA I read states: "These TOOLBAR TERMS OF USE govern your use of the Toolbar only. Other terms of use govern any other software that you may choose to install on your computer.") However, I'm worried about people becoming confused about "Tux Paint" versus "Tux Paint Plus." It want it to be clear that the 'official' versions of Tux Paint are the ones released by us, the current set of developer volunteers, and that we cannot be held responsible for any problems that come up by using this "plus" version. (During the Google Summer of Code mentor summit in October, it was recommended that we trademark the name "Tux Paint" to help avoid these kinds of issues. How do people feel about that?) The following is not anything to do with Tux Paint specifically, but is a fwd of a message from Steve Hargadon, a nice fellow in my area who promotes Open Source in K-12 (primary) education environments. I'm taking the liberty of passing his note along to the Tux Paint developer and user community mailing lists. ----- Forwarded message from "Classroom 2.0" <ma...@cl...> ----- Date: Tue, 25 Nov 2008 15:27:22 +0000 (GMT) From: "Classroom 2.0" <ma...@cl...> Subject: On Classroom 2.0: Help Build the New K-12 Open Source Community To: "bi...@ne..." <bi...@ne...> Reply-To: do-...@cl... A message to all members of Classroom 2.0 One of the professional hats I wear is as the director of CoSN.org's K-12 Open Technologies Initiative. I also run the Open Source Pavilions and speaker series at the CUE.org and NECC ed tech conferences. Because I'm a passionate advocate for Free and Open Source Software in K-12, I've been feeling for a while that the time is right for a stand-alone social network around its use. There is a good K-12 Open Source group within the Classroom 2.0 community, but groups don't have the same full functionality as stand-alone networks, and also don't have the same visibility. So I've done some reconfiguring with my www.K12OpenSource.com domain, creating a collaborative site which I hope will help to build the Free and Open Source Software ecosystem in K-12. The wiki that was previously there is now at http://wiki.k12opensource.com/, and I've set up a Ning community just for Open Source in K-12 at http://community.K12OpenSource.com/. I hope you'll come join the community and help to build it. I believe that having an inviting and easy-to-use social network will increase exposure, adoption, and idea-sharing around Open Source in K-12 at a time when it is truly needed (both financially and pedagogically). We'll also need some folks to start groups around favored programs--please consider coming and doing that! http://community.k12opensource.com Steve Steve Hargadon Founder, Classroom 2.0 st...@ha... In any case, the line that should go in your configuration file (be it ".tuxpaintrc" in your home directory on Linux, or "tuxpaint.cfg" in C:\Program Files\TuxPaint on Windows, or...) should look something like: lang=spanish You can run Tux Paint from the command line, with "--lang help" arguments, to get a list of supported languages. Or just check Tux Paint's "Options" documentation (which should have come with Tux Paint, but is also available online at: http://www.tuxpaint.org/docs/html/OPTIONS.html ) That document also talks about where Tux Paint's configuration files go. And finally, two other things: (1) Tux Paint _should_ honor your desktop's locale preference, if supported, and (2) you can also use the "Tux Paint Config." tool (run "tuxpaint-config" on Linux; on Windows, go to the Tux Paint entry in your Start menu and select "Configure Tux Paint", etc.) to generate a configuration file for Tux Paint. Hardware problems are always a possibility - over-heating in hot weather with clogged cooling vents and a tired fan, but difficult to say without inspecting the hardware. I had a laptop (not mine) where the hard-drive was slowly failing. The machine started taking longer and longer to boot, a couple of blue-screens of death (page-faults) and finally it wouldn't boot at all. Until it failed to boot, I looked in all the wrong places for problems. cheers, John. |

I closed the application, then restarted computer, checked setup settings and restarted TuxPaint. This second time the program looked loading slower than usual, I tried some stamps (...to check my translation :) ) then, while I was typing some text, the program hung again. Mmmhhh...
