----- Original Message ----- From: Sue Morton <mor...@op...> > Is there a way to have the screen area "locked" from the commands? Kid Pix used to have a teacher selected mode where certain commands were hidden from the user. Just to throw something out. What about a way to select "safe" mode, where certain commands require a control click to work. The chance of a novice accidentally executing such a command would be remote. However, it would be easy for a supervisor (teacher or parent) to help them do it. --Peter |

My wife Melissa and I wrote an article about 'Tux Paint' for "TUX Magazine", a new online publication: "the first and only magazine for the new Linux user." The magazine is available for free off their website (you need to 'subscribe'), and comes in a rather slick looking PDF format. http://www.tuxmagazine.com/ (The article is in Issue #3, from June 2005.) Perhaps use a key (like [Space]) to 'grab' and 'ungrab' the mouse from the canvas area? I'll add this to the "RFE" (Requests for Enhancement) list over on the Tux Paint project at SourceForge.net. Thanks! > Their mouse accidentally moves > across the drawing area and onto the print icon, and so there are many > unwanted printings. Another thing to note is that we've already implemented an "Are you sure?" option when printing, giving kids an opportunity to abort if they mistakenly hit the 'Print' button on the screen. That will be in version 0.9.15. Sorry for the wasted paper! :) -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Bill, Is there a way to have the screen area "locked" from the commands? We have a lot of our kindergarten kids having a ball playing with tuxpaint, using big sweeping movements. Their mouse accidentally moves across the drawing area and onto the print icon, and so there are many unwanted printings. I don't want to turn printing off because there are times we do want to print. Hi! Sorry for the crash! :^( The last stable release of Tux Paint (0.9.14) still, I believe, depended on the "NetPBM" tools for printing. (Well, at least, that's what it defaulted to... I suppose ImageMagick's "convert" might work as well, perhaps together with some other PostScript-generating programs. Or maybe if your print system is set up to 'magic'ally convert PNG data when printing, a plain "lpr" command would suffice.) So, the easiest solution would be to install NetPBM, so that you get "pngtopnm" and "pnmtops" tools. Otherwise, we can figure out an alternative way to get the PNG data out of Tux Paint and onto a piece of paper. :^) Thanks, and sorry for the trouble! (The upcoming version of Tux Paint will be able to generate PostScript interally, thus removing the NetPBM-or-similar requirements.) -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Help, Configured tuxpaintrc in home directory and every configuration change in this file seems to function correctly when changed. e.g. Sound/no sound Quit/No Quit etc. However when I try to print the program crashes or just closes. I have tried various configurations in the tuxpaintrc file with printing, I receive however constantly the same error: sh: pngtopnm: command not found sh: pnmtops: command not found lpr: error - stdin is empty, so no job has been sent. Help anyone? Many thanks |

I teach computer skills to K-4th grade kids, and we have used TuxPaint a = lot this year. The kids love it, and I like the fact that the pictures = are saved in a format that is easy to import into iPhoto and quickly = turn into a web page. By "background", do you mean the drawing canvas? The current release of Tux Paint can be launched in an 800x600 window, providing a somewhat larger canvas. The upcoming 0.9.15 version of Tux Paint will include even more options for larger displays, and should even be able to fit perfect (at full-screen) on the newer, larger, wider Apple displays. :) If you meant something else, can you explain what you meant? :^) Thanks! -bill! |

Check out some of the CD compliations of Open Source software available for Windows: http://www.theopencd.org/ http://gnuwin.epfl.ch/en/ For Internet access, if you're currently using Internet Explorer, you should strongly consider switching to Firefox or Mozilla, as they're a bit more secure. :^) http://www.mozilla.org/ For word processing, OpenOffice.org is the big name in the Open Source community, but it's actually an entire suite of office programs (including spreadsheet, presentation, etc.). http://www.openoffice.org/ AbiWord is much lighter, and only does word processing. Both programs have varying degrees of success reading and writing Microsoft formats. (Of course, since they're free, it shouldn't be too big of a problem distributing them to students, to use at home instead of MS Word, if necessary.) http://www.abisource.com/ Some other educational apps you might want to look at include Tux Typing 2, a typing tutor from Tux4Kids (same as Tux Paint :^) ) http://tuxtype.sourceforge.net/ ... and the excellent suite of games and activities for young kids, Gcomrpis: http://gcompris.free.fr/ The Simple End User Linux (SEUL) educational application index might be useful, but keep in mind that it's focused on apps for Linux. Many of them (like all of the ones I mention above) may be available for Windows and Mac, as well, but it's not ALWAYS the case... http://richtech.ca/seul/ Finally, you might also want to poke around Freshmeat.net, which is a huge index of Open Source software (for all platforms). You can browse into the "Microsoft -> Windows -> Win95/98/ME" category here, for example: http://freshmeat.net/browse/218/ and then use the search box at the top to find particular kinds of apps within that category. (I think if you create a user account and log in, you can browse the software categories _under_ the OS. They have nearly 900 "educational" applications listed, for example, so being able to cull that down to ONLY the Windows and/or Mac versions would probably be useful.) Anyway! *WHEW!* Good luck! -bill! |

Hello, I am the computer teacher at Chicora Elementary School in N. Charleston, S.C. It is a very poor school where only a few of the children have computers. Of course there is not a lot of money sitting around for software at the school either so I enjoy finding FREE software. Tuxpaint is awesome! I've included it on a page of Freeware & Shareware that I like - http://www.chasarea.com/education/freeware_shareware.htm . Send me your favorite and I will add it.
