Hi, I sent this file off to bill last night but I must have missed him: http://www.johnnypops.demon.co.uk/tuxpaint-fixed-stamps-crash.zip It fixes the problem on my Win98 machine that otherwise crashes, but it's a bit of a mystery to me why it works on the other anyway. Could you, Ray and others give it a test? For the curious, the changes are in cvs, and there is some evidence in Google that the problem is known :-) best regards, John Popplewell. |

Other people are having trouble, too: When the stamp package is installed TuxPaint will start, and run until the stamp button is selected. Then I get the error message (below) and TuxPaint shuts down. If I uninstall the extra stamps al works just fine. I am running win98SE TUXPAINT caused an invalid page fault in module TUXPAINT.EXE at 0187:004183a7. I've been hearing of some graphics-related problems under Windows XP, so _perhaps_ it's related. However, in the meantime, could you do me a favor and check in your C:\Program Files\TuxPaint (or whever "TuxPaint.exe" is installed) and see if there are "stderr.txt" and/or "stdout.txt" files laying around? Those might contain useful error messages that we can use for figuring out what's causing the crash. Sorry for the trouble! FYI, if any kids get frustrated to the point of not liking Tux Paint any more, there _is_ an option to re-enable the "all buttons do the same thing" feature that Tux Paint had previously. (See "Mouse & Keyboard" tab in Tux Paint Config.) Thanks for the report! Glad it's working so well for you!!! :) -bill! |

Today I just installed the newest version in our school's computer lab and let my first graders "play". We all agreed that this version is a significant improvement in so many ways. Thank you!!!!!! Keep up the great work. Michael Richards Mildred L. Day School Arundel, Maine |

I updated all my lab computers (winXP) with 0.9.15 today and really enjoyed it. I teach computers to about 430 students, ages Pre-Kindergarten up to Second Grade. I use TuxPaint extensively for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. First and Second grade use other programs, but TuxPaint is usually a choice after they complete their work and it remains a favorite. Today, I allowed all grades time for them just to 'play' with the new version of TuxPaint. Below are some of my observations from one day of 0.9.15. I really liked the new 'sizer' for stampers. (I think it would be great for the fonts, too) Something my students really liked was the expanded palette. As for the new stamps, my students think that any new stamp is a treat, so they were in heaven. One thing that caused some of my students problems was the middle and right mouse buttons doing nothing, expect causing a pop-up. I love it! I struggle with get my younger students to use just their 'pointer' finger and the left mouse button. Thank you! Cal Hardage cha...@gb... |

Tux Paint 0.9.15's source-code was released yesterday, and today I received a build for Windows! Hopefully Mac OS X will be coming soon. (Once it arrives, I'll be announcing the latest Tux Paint more widely.) In the meantime, Windows users can download Tux Paint 0.9.15 and a new set of Stamps (the "2005.11.25" release) here: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/download/windows/ [*] For the time being, everyone else can grab the source-code if they'd like to compile it themselves: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/download/source/ Enjoy! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ [*] If you'd rather not use an "installer" program, you can download everything as a pair of ZIP files for Windows: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/download/windows-zip/ |

The Mac version of Tux Paint is, sadly, the most neglected. :^) I was hoping someone more Mac-saavy would have responded by now. I checked the source-code, and it appears the _current_ version of Tux Paint saves it in the user's home folder, under the following directory: ~/Library/Application Support/TuxPaint Hopefully that's the same in the latest OS X version (the previous 0.9.14 is the latest for OS X at the moment... hopefully within the next few days, 0.9.15 will be out for OS X, too!) Good luck, -bill! |

A beta version of the upcoming "0.9.15" version of Tux Paint has just been created for Windows. This is your chance to check out the latest and help us make sure it works well when we do the final release later this month. You can download either a ZIP-file version, or an installer version, of both Tux Paint and the add-on Stamps collection, from the following FTP site: ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/testbuilds/win32/ If you try it out, please post your comments here (or on "tuxpaint-devel", if you're subscribed to that list as well). Hi , I just installer tuxpaint for my daughter and she loves it. I was going to create some new starters and stamps for her, but the documentation doesn't mention the directory path for the various folders for osx. Can anyone supply the location to install the new files and any particulars regarding naming etc that might need to be followed. Thanks Bob __________________________________ Yahoo! Hi Bill We use Tux Paint with Kindergarten to Yr6 students (Mac OSX) - our biggest need is to be able to print the whole picture. When we run it full screen at 800x600 we haven't been able to set the page setup/landscape so that all the pic prints. So Bill/Santa my wish is for a more readily available page setup. Thanks for your help. (Do the instructions make sense? Easy to read? Etc.) [snip] I had no idea TuxPaint could do this. Great feature! I am going to try this out with my two little ones... As for the documentation, I think it is fine. When providing instructions on how to create a new transparent PNG, you have had to be specific to one program (GIMP) of course, so many people will either have to grab a program that is new to them or figure it out themselves. But there is no way round that :-( Regardless though, the first bit explains _what_ is needed and the last bit _why_ it is needed, which provides as much general guidance as could be expected. Might it be that what most users would really want, is not instructions on how to make their own pictures, but more examples to download? If so, the users as group could step in I suppose! Btw, thanks once again for the great program. Regards Roberto/. |

Hello Tux Paint users, I am working on a project for kids. http://www.sip.be/stamand/zooproject/zoo.htm I you have some time, have a look. I am expecting more pictures/stamps from Japan, Canada, Sweden, Ireland,=20 Slovenia, Latvia, Ghana and Croatia. They have all received my working=20 materials (chenille). When the 'chenille animal' returns, I take pictures= =20 and I transform them into a stamp. (I use the Gimp)Not so easy because t= he=20 animals have a lot of 'hair' ;-). If you can make a drawing with our stamps with your pupils/kids... please= =20 send me the png file. I will place it on the website. (with photos of the= =20 kids drawing it if it is possible) Thanks! I'm preparing to release Tux Paint 0.9.15 soon. Sadly, it won't have all of the promised or requested features, as I haven't had much time to work on it, but it's definitely quite an improvement. Before wrapping things up too much, though, I thought I'd ask my trusty "tuxpaint-users" subscribers if they had any requests. NO PROMISES, of course, since I'd like to get 0.9.15 out the door soon. (It's been almost a year since 0.9.14!) Thanks! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Hi everyone! Someone emailed me privately today, asking for help getting some JPEG images put into Tux Paint to use for coloring. I replied with some instructions, and ended up focusing on preparing an image using The Gimp (since it's also Open Source and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux), and was planning on creating some "official documentation" based on my emailed instructions. I thought I'd post the instructions here, first, to get feedbac from other Tux Paint users. (Do the instructions make sense? Easy to read? Etc.) Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions/improvements! ;^) -bill! What you need to do is find the "starters" folder in Tux Paint's folder on your system. (If you're using Windows, it should be under "C:\Program Files\TuxPaint\starters", assuming you installed Tux Paint in the default location, using the installer version, and not the ZIP-file version of Tux Paint.) Inside you should find the four Starters that came with Tux Paint 0.9.14. Two are coloring-book-outline style: a chicken and an airplane. The other two are photographics: a coral reef and a skyline. You should see these same pictures when you hit the "Open" button from within Tux Paint. (In the future, we might move these into a new dialog that will appear when you hit "New", but we haven't worked on that yet.) If you load either of the coloring book images in a more professional graphics program, like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or The Gimp (the latter of which is free, Open Source software, like Tux Paint), you'll notice that it is actually a black outline on top of transparency (no color). So if you're interested in making coloring-book images with the current version of Tux Paint, you'll need to load them -- you said they were JPEG -- into something like The Gimp, and then remove the white background. Then save it in PNG format, which is what Tux Paint prefers. (You CANNOT use JPEG, since it doesn't have a concept of "transparent", which is currently a requirement in Tux Paint.) The "PNG" documentation in Tux Paint explains a little more about this: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/docs/PNG.txt What you'll need to do is tell the professional paint program "turn white into transparent", and then simply save the image as a PNG inside Tux Paint's "starters" folder. In The Gimp, you can do this using the "Select Regions by color" tool. (It looks like a little hand with a finger pointing at a box of color.) Once you pick that tool, simply click any white pixel in your image and it should select ALL of the white in the image. Of course, if the image was scanned, or was stored as a JPEG, not all white pixels will be exactly the same color white. You can tell Gimp to be a little more sloppy when by increasing the tool's "Threshold". Double-click the "Select Regions..." icon in Gimp's toolbox and a "Tool Options" dialog should appear. Once you have all of the white selected, you need to turn it transparent, so that Tux Paint will let the kids draw on the transparent bits. First, make sure you CAN. In the image window's menubar, select the "Layers" menu and find the "Transparency" sub-menu. Click the "Add Alpha Channel" item. Finally, hit Ctrl+K (or use the "Edit->Clear" menu item) and all of the white in the image should turn into a kind of checkerboard pattern. It's not transparent! Do "File->Save As..." and save the image with a ".png" extension inside Tux Paint's "starters" folder, and then, from within Tux Paint, click the 'Open' button. You should see your picture towards the top of the thumbnail listing. Open it, and you should be able to draw 'behind' the outlines. (Everywhere that appears as white inside Tux Paint.) From a technical standpoint, all Tux Paint is doing is re-drawing the starter image _on top_ of the canvas, every time you draw or stamp in Tux Paint. The result is that the opaque parts of starter image are immutable. -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Hi Paula. At this time, Tux Paint itself doesn't have a way of bringing up the file dialog from the underlying environment (Windows, Mac OS X, KDE, etc.) However, earlier this year I began working on a tool which brings up a dialog _before_ Tux Paint is launched, asking where to save files. It then sends that choice to Tux Paint via its "savedir" option. You can find it here, for Linux and Windows: (unfortunately, nothing for Mac OS X yet... finding OS X developers is like pulling teeth, it seems!) ftp://ftp.billsgames.com/unix/x/tuxpaint/savedir/ As seen in the README file there: The solution: ------------- This tool simply shows a small dialog containing a list of student's names (or class rooms, or other identifying information), each of which correspond to a particular directory. Using the students from the example above, even though "Billy" and "Suzy" both have the same directory on the file server mounted as their PC's "H:" drive, this tool can cause Tux Paint to save its files in either "H:\billy\" or "H:\suzy\", depending on which name they pick from a list. It does this simply by calling the Tux Paint executable (e.g., "tuxpaint.exe") with the "--savedir" command-line argument. (It's the same as the directory choice found in the "Tux Paint Config" GUI tool, except it's not coming out of a configuration file.) Let me know if that helps in the interim! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |
