Hi all, Tuxpaint just quits after displaying the splash screen on my Windows 2000 machine. The strange thing is that if I uninstall Tuxpaint and the stamps, and then reinstall Tuxpaint and the stamps, that tuxpaint will work again. However, once I reboot the machine, Tuxpaint will no longer start until I reinstall Tuxpaint and its stamps. I've tried purging the lockfile, but it did not help. I couldn't find a reference to this problem in the bug tracker or elsewhere on the web. Has anyone seen this problem or have suggestions on how to debug this? Thanks, Albert |

Bill, Please don't take too long with this - I have 50 kindergarten kids doing individual slides right now which I was going to put together into a slideshow in a fortnight in another program. You would be a lifesaver if they could do it themselves! I've added a basic slideshow feature to Tux Paint! Here's how it currently works: 1. From the 'Open' dialog, you'll click the "Slides" button at the lower left. 2. A file selection screen, almost identical to the 'Open' dialog, will appear. 3. Click each image you wish to show in your slideshow, one at a time. 4. Digits will appear at the lower right corner of each image's thumbnail, denoting what order the images will be shown in. 5. A slider on this screen allows you to set the pace of the slideshow (from 'you have to click to go to the next slide', to slow, through to fast). 6. Click "Play" During the slideshow, you can use the Space or Enter keys to go to the next slide manually. Or click the "Next" button at the lower left. Additionally, you can use the Left and Right arrow keys to go back and forth, respectively. Press Escape, or click the "Back" button at the lower right to return to the slide selection screen. This feature can be used for simple slides, and very basic animation. (Remember that, normally, Tux Paint asks you if you want to make a new file every time you click Save. Make small adjustments to your picture, and Save it to a new file each time, and voila! Animation!) I'm still not sure when Tux Paint 0.9.16 will be released, but hopefully some time in the next month or so. In the meantime, the code is available in the CVS repository, so developers can check it out now and give it a test drive! http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/source/#cvs PS - This closes Source Forge "Request For Enhancement" #1070404 :^) http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1070404&group_id=66938&atid=516298 -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

I've just registered the domain name "tuxpaint.org" and have placed a copy of the Tux Paint website there: http://www.tuxpaint.org/ The old website (at http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/ ) will remain, and will continue to be updated. However, obviously this new address is shorter and catchier, so feel free to tell your friends and family about it. Also, if you happen to be looking around and notice any problems with either website, let me know! Thanks, -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Someone recently discovered that KidPix doesn't work with a Citrix Server setup, and asked whether Tux Paint would. I know Tux Paint works with LTSP, and I've heard reports of it working with Windows Terminal Services[*], so I'm _guessing_ it will work. But I thought I'd ask around to see if anyone could confirm one way or the other. Thanks! [*] I should really keep track of these things on the "Features" page of the Tux Paint website (or maybe a new "Compatibility" page). -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

I was trying to remember what day the first alpha version of Tux Paint was released, and when I double-checked, I discovered it was four years ago _today!_ (Father's Day: Sunday, June 16th, 2002) Happy birthday, Tux Paint! :^) Thanks to the 100s of thousands of people who have downloaded it over the years (over 220,000 for the latest version released back in November), and the 100s of people who have helped make it possible! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

I'm running the latest build (0.9.15) and latest config util on OS X 10.3.9. It appears the some preferences are honored (screen size) and others are ignored (print command, print dialog alt option, no save over). It is working on another machine and both appear to be configured identically. Can you help me figure out what's going on? In order to print properly, I must get the print config dialog up, but no combination of preferences and key-strokes appears to work. My workaround of using an alternate command-line is totally ignored. Thanks, Stewart |

Two questions: =20 1 - Is there a way to display text files assoicated with Starters? I = know that the text files associated with stamps appear below the main = screen but I have not been successful in displaying the text file = associated with Starters. I have created templates for various = activities and would like to include brief instructions on how to = complete the worksheet. =20 2 - Where is the information for the "save directory" stored? I would = like to be able to remotely update this information without having to = run the config on each computer in the lab. Can this be done? I use = ARD (Apple Remote Desktop) to copy Starters and Stamps to all the = computers but I have to run to each and every computer to change the = save directory between classes! =20 Thank you for your time! Hi Bill!, et al. My latest harebrained inspiration is to use tuxpaint to make paper dolls. I'm thinking of two series at the moment. Some garments based on fashions from Harper's Bazaar from the mid to late 1800s, and some simplified kimonos derived from some 19th century Japanese woodcuts. I'll redo them all as original works, but the sources of inspiration should be out of copyright anyway. I'm also planning a couple of colouring book starters based on these Ideally it should be simple to use, but versatile. And preferably without turning into a humungous download. I'd like the users to be able to: 1/. Print a doll that they could assemble into a free standing model. =09 2/. Print clothing, and maybe wigs and accessories, that they could attach to the doll model via paper tabs. =09 3/. Use the doll in tuxpaint via the stamp tool, and stamp clothing, wigs, etc directly onto the doll image. =09 3/(a) Modify that (dressed) doll image, and print it out so that it can be assembled into a free standing model. =09=09=09 4/. Use the dolls, clothing, wigs, etc as regular tuxpaint stamps. =09=09 I can think of two approaches to this. The first one is modular. I would make some base doll stamps for each series, plus stamps for frocks/wigs/etc. Then I'd make a stamp a piece for the plinth, brace, shoulder and hip tabs, etc. Users could use these to assemble their own dolls. The second approach is just to be redundant. I'd make two copies of each stamp. One with the plinth/tabs, and one without. There is only minimal difference in the workload between the two approaches. Personally I favour the first approach. Its the most versatile in that the user can assemble what they want, as they want. They would also be able to use the plinth and brace stamps to convert the colouring book starters into free standing models. It will have a smaller footprint in the stamps scrolling list, and less impact on the size of the download. On the down side, it will take more planning on the part of the user. And more adult supervision, particularly for younger users. At a WAG, and assuming nothing crops up to further complicate my life and eat my free time, I estimate about 4 months to turn out 2 Japanese dolls, 2 Harper's dolls, 4 kimonos, 4 frocks, accessories, and 2 starters. I'd be interested in hearing any comments, opinions, or suggestions. Particularly about which approach is preferred, and why. Also if anyone knows any reason why we shouldn't do this (I'm hoping no one has been granted a patent on using a computer program to make paper dolls). I've attached an .svg of the outline rough for the first doll, to give people a better idea of what I'm rabbiting on about. Hi Bill, > Hi Sue - Have you tried holding the [Option / Alt] key when clicking > 'Print'? Tried this just now. This will print to the default printer in the user's profile. However I was hoping the printer list would come up so that you could select the relevant printer (and/or see which printer has been made the default) so the process is similar to printing from other programs. The children move around the school and the default printer changes (especially if we want to choose between colour or B&W). I realise I am asking a lot from a free program, but it has been so well received at school (and kids have told me their parents have downloaded it at home), I would like it to have as much ease of use in the school setting as possible - 5 year olds up. So in the end, we'd have buttons like this on the right (when the 'scissors' icon on the left was clicked): Rectangle Dashed Lasso Fuzzy (magic wand) Stamp Plus Minus <-- these toggle (both off, plus on or minus on) Cut Copy <-- these do the action immediately, then go back to the previous mode Paste <-- switches to pasting mode, similar to Stamps tool and at the bottom, these become active when in pasting mode: Scale slider ................. Adding full keyboard control (mostly for accessibility by those who cannot proficiently use a mouse) has been on my 'to-do' list for a while. I'm also considering joystick input, as a number of 'switch' interfaces for disabled people seem to use it. (Also, this might lead to a Dreamcast port, which would be pretty cool ;^) ) -bill! |

Well, two hours later, I finally got the right combination of SDL calls and other code in there to get it working right. :^) http://cia.navi.cx/stats/project/tuxpaint/.message/82f6 Thanks again for pointing this out to me. In the past, I've had a lot of control over the PNGs that Tux Paint tries to load (either because they were stuff I shipped (stamps, starters, etc.), or because Tux Paint actually saved them in the first place). Obviously, this meant some corner cases weren't being tested thoroughly enough. ;^) -bill! |
