I created a bunch of starter images and loaded them in the "starters" folder... i have noticed now when i click "Open" it takes a while to display the thumbnails (i assume that each time it is recreating the thumnails of the starters folder... rather than pulling a cache copy - like it does with the saved images). Is this the case? Anything i can do to speed this process up, short of deleting my starter images? Second, several of my "starter" images only appear as a black blob as a thumbnail... once they are clicked on... all is ok? Any idea what the problem is? Let me know and i can fwd an example image. Regardless of what computer or OS (Mac or Win XP)... same problem. thanks --------------------------------- What are the most popular cars? Find out at Yahoo! Autos |

Has anyone done this, or know if it's possible? > Is there anything specific one has to do to get it to work??? > Unfortunately, I've no idea either. I've no access to any Windows server setups, and almost no experience with them. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work though. As long as each user gets their own place to create the lock-file and save images it should 'just work'. For example, if I unpack the zip version to a read-only shared drive on a simple peer-to-peer network, then I can run Tux Paint on my other Windows machines by launching it from the shared drive. The lock-file, image files and optional configuration file are stored on the local machine. Presumably, on a setup with a server that the user logs onto, the 'roaming profile' registry monkey-business can arrange for these files to be stored on the server with the rest of the users data and application settings ... The main improvement with the latest version is that Tux Paint no longer writes to the application directory by default :-) If Tux Paint is started from a shortcut, the location where it does write can be specified by the --savedir command-line parameter. Otherwise, it uses the registry entry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\AppData to obtain a user-relative path and then appends 'tuxpaint' and creates that directory if it doesn't exist. This path is usually of the form: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\TuxPaint\ A few years back, I saw an impressive demonstration of a Novell Netware setup that 'watched' a program install, monitored its behaviour when run and then replicated the required registry stuff for each user account. Tux Paint doesn't do anything weird (I don't think - it barely knows it's running on Windows :-) so it should be easy to setup. The installer-less zip version would minimise the potential for confusion when experimenting. I can make an offer: I live in Manchester, UK if there are any local school IT departments (say) that fancy a Tux Paint install party one weekend ... :-) > > PS - This is something we should have listed in the FAQ, since it's > been asked a few times. :^) (It should probably go in the Windows > installation guide for Tux Paint, too!). > Unless someone who knows what they are doing Windows network-wise (I don't) can write this up, it's going to have to be figured-out, done, tested and then written up. Would be very useful, cheers, John. |

Happy New Year! I finally went in and dusted off my CafePress.com account, and discovered they have more items that I can plop the Tux Paint logo onto (including more kids sizes), so I've done just that! You can find links to them all here: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/merchandise/ Also, I've created an ISO image containing Tux Paint 0.9.15b Windows Mac OS X versions, along with documentation and source code, and uploaded it to the Tux Paint SourceForge project ( http://www.sf.net/projects/tuxpaint/ ) I'll be sending a disc to CafePress, and soon you'll be able to buy it through them! (I might also contact CheapBytes and other places, to see if they'd like to carry CDROM versions of Tux Paint.) Enjoy! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Most of this path is a registry entry so 'Documents and Settings' and 'Application Data' are internationalised. This is how, on Windows, different users get their own (independent from other users) pictures, settings, stamps, fonts etc. It also allows the Tux Paint program directory to be protected from meddling, and means that it works 'out-of-the-box' for restricted users. Having just the pictures in say 'My Documents\My Pictures\' would be nice. In fact, a symbolic link to the pictures would have been a nice solution.... The 'savedir' command-line option still works though, if you want to change it back so you can all share your pictures again, cheers, John Popplewell. >=20 >=20 > Thanks for helping me. >=20 > Greetings >=20 > Lieven >=20 > ----------------------------- > Lieven Van Parys > Moerasstraat 11 > 8760 Meulebeke > Belgium >=20 > ICT-co=F6rdinator Vrije Basisscholen Meulebeke > E-mail: lie...@sk... > Website: http://www.sip.be/stamand/school.htm >=20 > Nieuw project: 'ZOO' > http://www.sip.be/stamand/zooproject/zoo.htm > ----- Original Message -----=20 > From: "Bill Kendrick" <nb...@so...> > To: "Tux Paint Users" <tux...@li...> > Sent: Thursday, December 08, 2005 8:36 PM > Subject: [Tuxpaint-users] The Open Source Educator looking for articles >=20 >=20 > > > >David Trask (who some folks might recognize from Vassalboro Community=20 > >School > >in Maine, which has in the past got some coverage for K12 Linux stuff he= 's > >set up) is putting together an electronic magazine called > >"The Open Source Educator" (TOSE), and they're looking for articles. > > > >A Wiki has been set up for TOSE, here: > > http://www.vcsvikings.org/tose/doku.php > > > >Notable to tuxpaint-users readers is the fact that one topic they'd like > >covered is "Teaching Tux Paint". :^) > > > >Enjoy! Hello, I found something strange. Is this correct???? Where does Tux Paint save pictures? By default, normally this is=20 "~/.tuxpaint/saved/" under Linux and Unix, and "userdata\" under Windows. I use windows XP and the newest version of TuxPaint. The directory=20 'userdata' doesn't exist. I didn't change the configuration. I found the=20 drawings here in a hidden directory c:\Documents and Settings\(owner)\Application Data\TuxPaint\saved\ Thanks for helping me. David Trask (who some folks might recognize from Vassalboro Community School in Maine, which has in the past got some coverage for K12 Linux stuff he's set up) is putting together an electronic magazine called "The Open Source Educator" (TOSE), and they're looking for articles. A Wiki has been set up for TOSE, here: http://www.vcsvikings.org/tose/doku.php Notable to tuxpaint-users readers is the fact that one topic they'd like covered is "Teaching Tux Paint". :^) Enjoy! I noticed this blog entry while ego-blog-searching via Yahoo! this morning ;) http://tametheweb.com/2005/12/low_cost_software_on_public_pc.html "For an upcoming article in Computers in Libraries magazine, I'd like to hear from public libraries who are using free or very low-cost software on public-access computers. I'd particularly like to hear from smaller institutions and those who are using less common programs such as Tux Paint or Gimp. E-mail rachel(at)lisjobs.com, and I'll send you just a few short questions. Thanks! - Rachel" Where aforementioned Rachel seems to be: http://www.lisjobs.com/ and the above is in her blog at: http://librarycareers.blogspot.com/ Soooo... in case anyone out here is doing just that and wants to contact her... John Popplewell build an updated version of Tux Paint 0.9.15 (dubbed "0.9.15-2") which works around the bug in Windows98 that was causing Tux Paint to crash if the Stamps package was installed. As usuall, it is available as both an installer executable (.exe) and a ZIP archive (.zip). Additionally, the ZIP archive is now more compatible with older systems, so if you had trouble unZIPping 0.9.15 or 0.9.15-1, this one should work. (A new Stamps ZIP is available, too. It's identical to 2005.11.25, except it's been ZIP-compressed differently.) Installers: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/download/windows/ ZIP-files: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/download/windows-zip/ Enjoy! And thanks to those of you who reported problems and helped us track down the issues. And, of course, thanks to John for building a new version to get around aforementioned issues! ;^) -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Hi Jean-Paul! Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with Mac OS X. What are ".dnp" files? Where are you opening them? (when you say you "can still see them" and "click open a totally black image is loaded"?) In Tux Paint, or in the Mac's Finder? I downloaded the new version for mac X and tried to open my old .dnp templates. I can still see them, but a bit fuzzy and when I click open a totally black image is loaded. The dnp files are still OK as I can open them in GraphicConverter. Any idea to correct this. Thanks |

I can't seem to make this work. Hrm, unfortunately, this isn't possible at the moment. :^( I'll add this to our Request For Enhancement list, and hopefully can get it into the next version of Tux Paint. One problem I forsee is that it _might_ not be easy for us to get a _currently-running_ copy of Tux Paint to open a file when it's double-clicked. But I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. ;^) > Any ideas or suggestions? > > He has a template file in a shared folder on the school server. It might be possible to create a small script that copies a given file into the user's Tux Paint directory. You didn't say what platform your school is using (Windows, Linux or Mac OS X), but it should be possible on all of them. Whatever gets written might need to get re-written for each platform, though. :^) Under Linux, it could be as simple as a wrapper to the "tuxpaint-import.sh" script that already comes with Tux Paint. (For example, a right-click context menu entry in KDE might be: "Open With -> Import into Tux Paint") > Sure would appreciate any feedback! This is certainly another one of those features I never planned for. ;^) (It's obvious I don't work in schools, or with more than one or two computers at a time, isn't it! ;^) ) If anyone else out here can think of a way this can be done in Windows and/or Mac OS X, please speak up! I have a teacher in our district who wants to be able to open a file in Tuxpaint by just double-clicking it. I can't seem to make this work. Any ideas or suggestions? He has a template file in a shared folder on the school server. He wants kids to be able to go there and open that file, modify it, and then save it into the students' default folder (which is in their home directory on the server). An alternative might be to go into Tuxpaint and open the file from a location other than the save directory, but I can't see a way to do that either. Sure would appreciate any feedback! |

Can you build a 0.9.15-2, I guess? :) Thx so much! -bill! |
