Does anyone here have experience running Tux Paint on Windows Terminal Server 2003? I remember back in November 2004 someone mentioning they had some problems, and saying they'd try to install Tux Paint "the TS 2003 way", to see if it helped, but I don't remember seeing any final answer. Another person emailed me today asking if Tux Paint works with it. I've never used Terminal Server, and don't have access to it, so was wondering if anyone out here in 'tuxpaint-users' has any experience. Thanks in advance, -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/ |

Hello Bill, Thanks for your e-mail. (You remember me? I sent some action photo's for=20 your article in 'Redhat') I already tried to make a txt file in utf-8 format. It went wrong. Hi Lieven! The easiest way is to create a text file (in UTF-8 format for non-Latin characters, such as Chinese, Hebrew and Japanese). The text file should simply have the same name as the PNG stamp image file, except with ".txt" as the file extension, instead of ".png". :^) The first line should be the English description. For translations of the description, add additional lines to the file that begin with "xx.utf8=", where "xx" is the locale code for the language (e.g., "jp" for Japanese, "zh" for Chinese, "de" for German). For example: A sumatran tiger. fr.utf8=Un tigre de Sumatra. You can see some example files in Tux Paint's current set of stamps. You can access them via the web interface to the CVS repository, for example: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/tuxpaint/tuxpaint-stamps/ I hope that helps! Please let me know when you've released your stamps (if you release them publically), as I'd be more than happy to link to them! I really couldn't find any information for _publishers_ (like myself), so I just dropped an email to the NETS Project Director to ask her for advice. In the meantime, if anyone out here more familiar with the National Education Technology Standards have any hints as to what would be needed for lesson plans to actually adhere to such standards, please speak up! [Moving from 'tuxpaint-devel' to 'tuxpaint-users', and Cc'ing Gina as well, since I'm not sure she's subscribed to either list] On Tue, Jul 12, 2005 at 10:50:32AM -0400, Gina Susanne Loveless wrote: > I'm a teacher and grad student. (I wasn't 100% sure what "NETS" was, but Google helpd :^) ) For those curious, I discovered it to be this: "The National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) Project is an ongoing initiative of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and a consortium of distinguished partners and co-sponsors." http://cnets.iste.org/ > I'm doing a project for my grad work and wanted to > use Tux Paint. I need lessons using Tux Paint and their alignment to the > NETS standards. Is this information available online, at all?????? Unfortunately, not that I know of. The closest thing I can think of is Francesca Campora's "Guida Didattica TuxPaint 2.0" ("Tux Paint Didactical Guide", in Italian): http://maestradigitale.it/tuxpaintguide2.0/1.htm (BTW, I'd love it if this were made available in other languages. It's published under the GNU Free Documentation License. :^) ) However, I'd be happy to look into this and find a way, if possible, for us to come up with lesson plans that can be 'blessed' as an NETS standard. I'm not positive when I'll have time to work on this, and encourage others to look into it and discuss it on 'tuxpaint-users', where it might be a little more applicable. I've actually moved this thread from 'tuxpaint-devel' to there. (See: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/lists/ for list info.) -- -bill! Besides 'Print' (and 'Quit', which can already be disabled, but obviously you CAN still quit Tux Paint :^) ), were there any other commands that you think should be semi-disable-able in this fashion? Looking at the code, it SHOULD work, although there's the aforementioned bug where you must be holding [Alt] when you click the "Yes" button in the print confirmation. (I've just corrected that bug, and version 0.9.15 will behave as designed: you hold [Alt] when you click 'Print', and that modification will 'stick', so you can let go of it when you go to click "Yes" or "No" in the "Are you sure you want to print?" dialog that we added in 0.9.14.) Additionally, a new setting will be added which allows you to tell Tux Paint to _always_ show the printer dialog, without the need to hold the [Alt] key each time. (As well as the converse: you can tell it to NEVER show the print dialog, EVEN if the [Alt] key is pressed. :^) ) Thanks, -- -bill! Picn*x14 --- Linux Anniversary Picnic & BBQ! bi...@ne... Hi Ouychai, thanks for offering to help. Our "tuxpaint-i18n" or "tuxpaint-devel" mailing lists might be more appropriate places to discuss this. (See http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/lists/ ) To answer briefly, though: (1) Download the source code from: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/download/source/ It might be best to download the latest development copy out of the "CVS" repository at SourceForge, rather than use the latest offical release (0.9.14, which is now about 8 months old!) There is information at the page listed above on how to do that. (2) Be sure you have all of the required helper libraries installed. They should all be available as packages for Fedora Core. http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/requirements/ (3) Simply use the "make" command to compile Tux Paint, and then "make install" (as root, or via the "sudo" command) to install it! If you need help, feel free to post a note to "tuxpaint-devel" or send me a message directly. (I'd like to keep this list, "tuxpaint-users", as non-technical and non-developer-oriented as possible... a place for teachers and parents to come and discuss Tux Paint and how they use it at school and home.) Hi Bill Thank you for your assistance, but no go I'm afraid. Tried your method using Option; Apple; Control; Function keys plus combinations of above. It just tells me i've printed the picture. I'm actually trying on a Powerbook if that could make a difference. I also should add my thanks at this time. Okay, admittedly, I'm using a generic PC-with-trakball USB keyboard, which has an ALT key, but I'm pretty sure an Apple Mac keyboard's Option key should do the same... In Tux Paint 0.9.14, it looks like you need to click 'Print', and then when the "Are you sure you want to print? Yes/No" prompt comes up, hold the Option (or ALT) key while clicking "Yes". I think the 'official' Apple name for the key is "Option". On some Mac keyboards, it also says 'Alt' on it, which is why I said "Alt/Option". Sorry :^) > When you get a chance could you please try the keys > and let me know? I'll boot up the iMac right now and give it a try. I'll post again in a few minutes. (It's old and slow. ;^) But, it was free!) -bill! |

HI I don't have an alt key, tried a variety of key combinations - no luck. When you get a chance could you please try the keys and let me know? That did the trick! I was happy to see the nice writeup in Tux Magazine last week. Good job! -- kai |

I can't find a page setup. is there a fix?? You may have luck holding the [Alt/Option] key down as you click 'Print'. That should, I believe, display a Mac OS X printer dialog. I'm not 100% sure if that'll work in Fullscreen mode, or not. Unfortunately, I don't have a Mac in front of me to test with. :^/ Let us know if that helps or not! (I'm hoping to improve Tux Paint's printing capabilities on Mac in the next release, though at this point, I can't guess as to when that version will be available.) Thanks! -bill! |

hi When we try to print (OSX FULLSCREEN 800/600 to HP4600DN) the pics are cropped as they try to print landscape across a portrait paper if you know what I mean. I can't find a page setup. is there a fix?? Thanks David __________________________________ Discover Yahoo! Find restaurants, movies, travel and more fun for the weekend. If all you have on Linux is a handful of cartoon Tux penguins, then you simply need to install the "tuxpaint-stamps" package. If you installed Tux Paint from source, you'll just want to grab "tuxpaint-stamps-####.tar.gz" from the 'Source' download page: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/download/source/ Then open the .tar.gz archive ("tar -xzf tuxpaint-stamps-####.tar.gz" on the command-line, for example), then go inside the directory/folder it created ("tuxpaint-stamps-####/"), and then, as 'root' superuser, run: "make install". Restart Tux Paint, and voila! If you installed from a package (on Debian via 'apt', on RedHat via 'yum' or an RPM package, etc.), just install the corresponding "tuxpaint-stamps" package. FYI, I've separated the stamps from the core package because some people want to give Tux Paint a test-drive but might NOT want to download 6-10MB. (The main program is only 2-3MB.) Also, eventually, the Stamps collection will be split up into smaller sub-packages, with various themes. Let us know if you need more assistance! -- -bill! bi...@ne... http://newbreedsoftware.com/ |

I noticed a big discrepency between the amount of images and sounds in the Linux and Windows versions. I use Linux and my wife Win2k. Her TuxPaint has many more sounds and stamp images. Is there a download area? -- kai |
