I think we've solved the problem by disabling "Time Machine," which backs up everything on the computer continually, while I'm working in a graphics program. It just couldn't keep up with me, is my theory. ;) My husband did a number of diagnostics after the iMac shut down unexpectedly while I was using Tux Paint or Painter X, and decided to replace the power thing (source or panel or whatever it's called) inside the computer, as well. Seems to be doing fine now, as long as I turn off Time Machine while I'm working. (At my age, it's nice to know I still can move faster than something.) ;) Because of the line width problem with Tux Paint, I'm probably not going to be able to use it to illustrate my book. Still, it's a GREAT program, and I love it! My friend Graham Freeman is founder (and general manager) of Cernio Technology Co-operative. ( http://www.cernio.com/ ) Very recently, he asked if Cernio could provide hosting for tuxpaint.org. Soon after receiving that email, the hard disk of the server at ServerBeach that was hosting tuxpaint.org started failing (the server would die numerous times per day). Long story short, with a lot of help from him via IRC, tuxpaint.org is now hosted on a virtual private server at Cernio, and should (hopefully) be humming along now. If anyone notices problems with the website, do let me know! Thanks and enjoy, -- and sorry for the down time while the ServerBeach system was in its death throes! -- -bill! Hi - Not at the moment. The main reason is to try and keep things simple. (We'd need to display a set of brush shapes, or a scaler -- like we use with Stamps -- somewhere on the screen.) It might be something worth thinking about, but we've got bigger fish to fry at th emoment. ;) > I don't see a way to "buy" a copy of the program; I only see the free > download. Tux Paint's entirely free. There IS a CDROM containing Tux Paint that you can buy via CafePress.com, but it's VERY out of date. If you've downloaded Tux Paint from the website, you've already got the latest version with all the current features! :) > Can you help please? > It truly is amazing, what you've done with this "children's" program! > Can't wait to teach it to my grandchildren, but first I need to learn > it myself... Based on stories I've heard, even if you try and learn it inside-out, the kids will still figure out how to do things you didn't think of. ;^) By the way, for some Tux Paint artistic inspiration, check out the gallery: http://www.tuxpaint.org/gallery/ (There are still literally HUNDREDS of pictures that I haven't had time to add to the gallery yet. :^/ I need to make it more self-serve one of these days.) -bill! |

Bill, Is there a way to change the line width(as well as the width of other features, such as darken or lighten) in order to draw things in perspective (like telephone poles or fence posts going away from you)? I don't see a way to "buy" a copy of the program; I only see the free download. Can you help please? It truly is amazing, what you've done with this "children's" program! Can't wait to teach it to my grandchildren, but first I need to learn it myself... Thanks, Gloria On Feb 23, 2009, at 8:39 AM, Gloria Weinberg wrote: > You're my hero, Bill. I just wanted to write the list and let you know that I am releasing a derivative of Ubuntu called Qimo, that will include TuxPaint as one of several games for kids. I put Qimo together as part of a charity that turns second-hand computers into educational and entertaining machines for kids aged 3 and up. You can learn more about us at http://quinncoincorporated.org and coming soon at http://www.qimo4kids.com -- Michael <Mi...@qi...> Qimo4Kids |

Which version is on Lenny? (You can just run "tuxpaint -v" to find out.) In any case, by default, Tux Paint uses the command-line 'lpr' program on Linux, so you might need to install a compatibility package to get that with CUPS. (I use KDE and have a networked printer, so things 'just worked' for me after setting up the printer in KDE's GUI config.) If there's another program you would use to send PostScript output to your printer, you can set it in Tux Paint's config file. (Global file is: /etc/tuxpaint/tuxpaint.conf User-specific file is: ~/.tuxpaintrc ) You can also use the tuxpaint-config GUI configuration tool if you've installed it. Good luck, -- -bill! By default, Tux Paint should adhere to whatever user accounting your computers are using. In other words, if each student logs in separately, their pictures should end up getting stored in their 'home directory'. For example, on Windows XP, the pictures get stored in: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\TuxPaint\saved In Vista: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\TuxPaint\saved And on Mac OS X: /Users/USERNAME/Library/Applicaton Support/TuxPaint/saved/ In each example above, you'd replace "USERNAME" with the name of the user. Now, if all of your students are accessing Tux Paint from the same account on the computer, you'd need to tell Tux Paint to specifically save in different folders, depending on who's using the system. I've never used KidPix, so I'm not sure how it did it, but a number of years ago I created a simple little 'front-end' to Tux Paint that provided a list of items that a user choses from. It then launches Tux Paint for them. Depending on the choice, it tells Tux Paint to load and save files from a different folder. (It just invokes Tux Paint with the "--savedir" command-line option.) It's available for Linux (KDE 3.5) and Windows (requires Python). You can learn about it and download it from here: ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/savedir/ Let me know whether that helps in any way! -- -bill! I'd like to know how to have multiple users to Tuxpaint, so that the slide show could be only the work done by one specific student. As a new user to this program, I'm liking it far better than old faithful KidPix, but really miss the ability to have a slide show from just one student's work. I was just filling out the DesktopLinux.com annual Linux desktop market survey and noticed Tux Paint is one of the choices in the graphics category! :) If you run Tux Paint on Linux, I encourage you to go vote ;) http://www.desktoplinux.com/cgi-bin/survey/survey.cgi?id=0115200914416 -- -bill! Hi Cindy. You had posted this without subscribing to the tuxpaint-users mailing list, and I didn't notice it had gotten 'caught' by the mailing list software until today. Sorry for the delay. I'm Cc'ing John Popplewell, who ports Tux Paint to Windows for us, in case he has any ideas, or needs to request further details from you (like specific details about the systems that work and don't work). Thanks and good luck! -bill! I know I would be willing to help!! This I do not know. I'm asking SPI (Tux4Kids is now an associated project) whether they can help with do this. (I'm guessing we'd need to pay for it... we may have some money left from GSOC 2008 mentor payments, and we'll probably want to trademark Tux4Kids, Tux Paint, TuxMath and TuxTyping, and whatever appropriate variations there may be.) I'll get on this soon. Thanks, all! -bill! |

I think we should trademark tuxpaint. I have a box with an xp partition here and I can install and test with various anti-spyware apps tomorrow. Dear Bill, I had a look, a lot of web pages offer the "Tux Paint Plus" to download. I am worried too, probably people can suppose it is something better than "normal" tuxpaint, because it is described as "an enhanced version of Tux Paint". I think it is better to understand if it is really an enhanced version of tuxpaint, and if not ... I can understand you, if you think to register the name "tuxpaint" as a registered tradename.
