Hey, just installed Seq24 and i've fallen in love. This is the sort of sequencer I've been looking for for ages. Been using LSDJ on the Gameboy for quite some time, which although being a tracker at heart, also implements the same MPC-style loop-based sequencing. Anyhow, I have a small feature request. I'd like a config option that allows me to queue loop toggling without holding Right Ctrl. I'm running Seq24 on a tiny tiny laptop with even tinier keyboard so finding ctrl every time I want loops to start on the beat is a bit distracting when fooling around doing things 'live'. Would also be cool to config the option to start the loop once the slower beat rectangle (in the upper right corner) reaches the end. That way you have time to queue several loops toggles without being in a rush and risk fudging the live arranging. So, in short.. auto-queue with "wait until end of loop" or "wait until end of 16-beat". Thanks for making a truly beautiful app! Cheers, Thomas www.covox.net |

seq24 has really matured since the last time I used it, about a year ago. It's working flawlessly for me now; I'm using the deb packaged version for a 64bit Ubuntu Dapper system. One thing I haven't been able to figure out: how do I graphically (or otherwise) modify the duration of a note? In other programs, you can "grab" the tail of the note and drag it to the left or right to change the duration of the note. Alternatively, a right click menu that opens a note properties dialog might help, note duration might be a property to expose there. Also, I'm looking for a shortcut for switching between live and song mode for Jack Sync; something besides opening the Options window. Documentation would be a great help! Has anyone considered starting a WIKI for seq24? I'd be happy to contribute. |

Hi and thanks for this great app which is the heart of my live audio configuration. I have a problem with Seq24 (8.3.0 ubuntu package) concerning midi in. I use alsa ports option , so that seq24 appears in qjackctl. When i send midi message to Seq24 (with midi input set to seq24:0) it won't do what it's supposed to. Let's say i have BPM up set to [1 0 176 126 64 127] and BPM down set to [1 0 176 126 0 63]. It's control change number 126 with velocity makin= g the bpm up or down. When i send (in pure data) control change 126 (with any velocity for now, let's say 127 and in channel 0) it the BPM doen't change. I can check that the signal is well sent to Seq24 by recording all input signal with a pattern. And i get correct values : control change 126 velocity 127.) And it's the same with other signals. It worked perfectly with other version of Seq24 when i wasn't using alsa ports option. I hope that you can help me, because i really would like to keep the alsa port option. Without it , all apps need to be launched an order , in orde= r to keep connections the way i want which is boring. Thanks again Thomas |

Hi, I'm a french, 26 years old man. I'm a beginner in computer assisted music. I used linux for a long time so I don't have any experience with software like Cubase or FL Studio. I'm not a real musician too (I gave up piano for many years) but trying to create music that others and I would appreciate is a plaisant hobbie. So to continue to speak about me, the first software I used was hydrogen, I recently used lmms which is interesting, I also used software like shaketracker and I like to play with terminatorX. More recently I've started to use three apps at time using jack : seq24,zynaddsubfx and specimen. I must say that seq24 (why 24 ?) is very easy to use and seems stable enough for a 0 version... Zynaddsubfx, if you don't know, is a very complete zynthetiser which produce some very clean and beautiful sounds. I use specimen in order to add samples to the synth part. So I would tell you some remarks about seq24 (most are feature request) : - Even if I guess it is difficulte to do it another way, I think seq24 is very agressive for eyes :) Note's representations are very thin and black on white is a high contrast, why not have custom colors (for notes and background) ? - Some "fill 1/4", "fill 1/2" features should be usefull. - In the song editor, the possibility to set fade-in and fade-out on each part would be great. As this exists in ardour. That'all. Regards, Stef |

How did you go about building seq24 on win32? Hi Rob, if I remember correct, I had to download and compile gtkmm from sources, and install it in my cygwin environment. then it compiled fine (maybe some bugs in configure, I remember I was removing some lines in it), plus the removal of alsa function calls (because there is no alsa-lib for win32) then it's everuthing ok, you can start the X server under windows and launch seq24, and everything seems to work ok, except that there are no midi outputs available. > Did you do anything with getting it to run with PortMidi? nope, because I didn't go too deep in reading seq24, and I had some doubts about how MidiBus class works... btw I'm pretty busy til the end of month, cause I have to study and do exams. past this period, I would be happy to help you with PortMidi. however I'll stay tuned for news.... ;) bye! -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2.2 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFElDncxlXK3KziJfcRAi/LAJ9aoREdLg6c4eZ8cvWmpjowalhX8wCeOYKE O++g+DE+GLnoQC2ZcUCfd4M= =dxNB -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

While i have no idea of german, the howto looks much self explanatory. Also, it would be nice if you can, better or worse, translate it to english. Rob Buse seems to be really busy these days, so it's really good to have some howtos spread on the web. It seems that there is a lot of people using seq24. And the alsa and jack projects made midi on linux a pleasure. With state of the art soft synths like zynaddsubfx, hydorgen, fluidsynth and specimen it's a pice of cake to make music on linux. Thanks for you message and let's hope to see the next version of seq24 soon! hello everybody, i am new in this list, so let me introduce myself. i use linux for making music since about 3 and a half years now (first planet ccrma, now agnula). most of the time i use muse, rezound and ardour together with external musical instruments and equipment (sampler, synth, ...). about 2 weeks ago i startet to work with seq24 - what a great program! on sunday i had a electronic-live-session with a friend and used seq24. it was the sequencer for my waldorf q, the master midi-clock for my korg electribe sx (and the midi-clock for my friends minikorg and his jomox xbase) and i did some midi-mixer-automation (yamaha O1v) with it. as midikeyboard i used my yamaha motif ... everything worked without any problems and with a perfect timing! !!! THANKS A LOT FOR THAT GREAT PROGRAMM !!! about 3 years ago, i started, together with a friend, a project for musicians concerned to audio and linux. it is called audio4linux.de and is only in german language (we try to reach musicians, who think, that linux and making music is something for linux-freaks. we think it is easier for them to start in their native language ;-) )... i wrote a seq24 howto for that and here it is: http://www.audio4linux.de/wiki/index.php/Seq24 perhaps someone is interested in that... thanks again - i won't use another sequencer for live-music anymore - keep on that great work! greetings to all of you l.chaos -- _________________________________________________________________ http://www.audio4linux.de - musikmachen mit offenen quellen |

This patch has the bugfix for the "last note quantized that dissapears", a "Quanize button" so you don't need to go trough the menu, and a "Quanized Record" button that makes your live record automatically quanized, so you don't have to bother correcting it anyway! This time i readed how to make a patch the right way. Enjoy. Ivan |

I may be wrong, but I think you want your gtkmm and gtk versions to
match. It looks like you upped your gtk to 2.8 and left gtkmm at 2.6.=20
Bring your gtkmm up to 2.8 and recompile seq24

Hi all,
I encounter a rather unpleasant problem with seq24. It crashes when I
choose a file using one of the file dialogs ('Save as', 'Import' or
'Open' menu items) and when editing boxes' name :
*** glibc detected *** double free or corruption (out): 0x08120a88 ***
Aborted (core dumped)
I think its between my current system config and seq24, because I tried
with older versions of seq24 and I get the same problem, whereas I used
to execute these versions previously on the same workstation without any
particular problem. I guess there is some compatibility problem with my
gtkmm version or gtk+ version or whatever. However the compilation goes
perfectly fine and I have no problem to play my songs with --file
options and edit them.
The following libraries are installed :
gtk+-1.2.10
gtk+2-2.8.17
gtkmm-2.6.5
glibmm-2.6.1
I ran seq24 under Valgrind and it reports an amazing amount of errors,
however it oddly doesn't crash.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi all. this is a feature proposal. currently to enter a note event the user has to 1) hold right mouse button, 2) position cursor 3) click left button to add a note proposed extension: 3*) press and hold left button to add a note 4) while still holding both buttons, drag cursor to the right; new notes are added automagically, with note height given by cursor vertical position, and with timestamp snapped to the currently selected grid 5) when few notes are added this way, dragging cursor to the left _removes_ newly entered notes right from the cursor; so that at any time the new notes onle fill the interval between the start of drag and current cursor position. 6) after the user releases left mouse button, all changes are registered as a single undo-able operation. Such extension simplifies things like percussion programming and allows easy creation of some weird patterns, which otherwise would take to much clicks to ever bother. On the other hand, the original note entry procedure works as before. Attached is a patch for proof-of-conept implementation; the code is not very elegant, but it illustrates the idea. --Maxim |

What happens when you run without the --alsa_manual_ports and have [manual-alsa-ports] set to 0 in your .seq24rc file as well.? Does seq24 not connect to anything or not start up? Is it printing any errors ? It should auto connect just like all the previous versions. >Also, options regarding JACK transport still require a restart, this >makes me sad :( I think there might be a bug in the dialog. I recently upgraded to seq24 0.8.6 and cannot understand how to work it efficiently. Firstly, to use it at all, I am forced to use the _command line_ option --alsa_manual_ports. This is the only way I am able to connect seq24 to any software synthesizers. Compared to older versions, this process is now much clumsier: I have to select MIDI bus in seq24, then open a connections manager (in this case qjackctl) and connect the seq24 MIDI bus to the software synthesizer. How can I make this work more efficiently? Also, options regarding JACK transport still require a restart, this makes me sad :( |

The best way to do that would be to have a version of seq24 greater than 0.8.0 and then run with the --manual_alsa_ports flag. You can then route the first midi bus to hydrogen via aconnect or qjackctl. cheers Rob >Hello. > >I like seq24 for being very straightforward, but I seem to miss a >few things about it : is it possible to default-route all sequence >buses to one app's midi in (say : to hydrogen ) ? > >How would you do it ? You are using an old version of seq24, cause it now behaves like a
normal ALSA sequencer client.
