Not sure if I'm using the correct terms and I might have mistakenly
explained something wrong, but I know now what is wrong.
First, it works, but only if I hold down the right mouse button for at
least a second.
If I click and hold on an empty box in the main window, the context
menu pops up with the "New" choice. This happens quite fast. When I
click and hold on a created box, I have to hold the button for a
second before the context menu pops up. I don't know if this is
considered user error since, but it seems foreign to what I'm used
to. A right click should bring up the context menu. I like the default
way of working in the editor window though, which uses a similar
method.
Fact: it takes longer to load the box context menu than the empty box
context menu.

This is very strange. You should not be able to access the menu at all if your clicking outside of a box on the loop screen. Does the menu work if you right click on the leftmost portion of the song editor window ? It would be nice if, when you make a new box on the main canvas, that
it would not automatically open a MIDI edit window.

Yes.
It works to right click on the canvas outside of the box to create a
new one, but there is no way to open the midi editor, except if you
never close it (something which I think is wrong behavior, but I'll
start a new thread on that).

Some new problems with this version:
Every time I left click on a new box in the main window, it spits out:
set_dirty
I'm also unable to right click on a box; nothing happens. This means,
I'm unable to open the midi editor.
Any pointers as to what I can try?

Hey everyone! seq24-0.8.4 has been released. This fixed a CPU hogging bug and adds LASH support. You can all thank Dave Robillard (the man who gave us LASH and Om) for the LASH support. Thanks Dave! You will probably want to run with --manual_alsa_ports if you want LASH to be able to restore your midi connections. Enjoy! Rob |

It's hard enough managing seq24 and 2 or 3 other apps as it is without scattering important controls over multiple windows. I suggest moving the "beat bar" to another window of its own. The same
for the transport controls; move to another window of its own, then
have a simple canvas remaining.

I really don't agree;). I would say something is wrong with the
application then, because you don't need to load much to show the
initial window.

It would be nice if the MIDI ports were not initially created, but you
would create them, name them or select them from the Output Bus
button.

Nothing? If there is nothing there, then what purpose does the nothingness serve? Splash screens do often serve purposes, usually to inform the user that a) the application IS loading, and b) the progress of loading. A good example of this is the GIMP. I'd rather see Rob focus on adding features to Seq24, rather than waste time to remove the logo, which other people like, and clearly he does otherwise he wouldn't have put it there. If you don't like the logo, then you can just delete it yourself and recompile. IF Rob takes your request to heart, I hope he leave the logo there as default, but gives you a commandline switch like --nologo or something. This would make you happy as well as everyone else who likes that logo where it is. Dana |

I like the logo there personally. I think the main window would look a little bland without it. As for being uncommon, I'm not sure about other Linux apps but Battery and Traktor are two examples of programs that have their logo in the main window... No, and I really like the logo a lot, but I don't find it consistent
with other apps. It's not common for apps to have their logo on the
main window.

It would be nice if the engine was separate from the UI. Then there could be a daemon and you could send messages to it where to insert notes. Maybe this could be a verse[1] buffer?. It would also run without a window system and you could connect a GUI like the current one. It would be nice if the selection could last longer. If I select a set
of events, the grouping selection is lost when I have moved it.
It would also be nice to get immediate effect when you move an event
and not just when you have moved it.

I had to remove all ALSA stuff to make it compile fine, but now I am a bit confused on how midibus works... I was thinking to make a PortMidi version of midibus class. anyone interested? IMHO would be a great milestone in seq24 development, but if you are interested only at linux users, I would do less effort by installing linux on my laptop :) please let me know... -- ciao!
