[Gnuplot-info] how to thin out textual xticlabels?

Hello gnuplot gurus!

Help me please with unexpected gnuplot (4.6/win32) behavior.
I do have the data file which looks like this:

And I have got two issues while trying to plot it.

1st. If I plot with the following script:

everything looks fine. Gnuplot puts line numbers as xticlabels with proper
interval (about 5000 with "autofreq" or any particular number given instead
of autofreq).
But if I try to show the time values (from the first column, by "using
($0):4:xticlabels(1)") instead of line numbers then gnuplot goes mad. It
prints time (and draws gridline) for every single line of data no matter if
I use 'autofreq' or specify precise step value.
How can I force gnuplot to thin textual labels out?

2nd. The minor one. Having the script from the first issue I have got
xticlabels (numbers) too close to the axis line. Bit if I try to put them
away by changing "offset 0,-2" to e.g. "offset 0,-3" xticlabels completely
disappear. I suppose they are not shown because their starting point appears
out of some bounding box, but I can not figure out which one and how to
extend it (preferably automatically, depending on the length of xticlabels).

[Gnuplot-info] Modifying axis labels for binary input

Hi all,

I'm plotting data from binary files, to be more precise one file
contains 250k one-byte values measured with a sampling oscilloscope. Now
gnuplot generates coordinates and labels the axes accordingly - x axis
by number of data point (I get ticks at 50k, 100k, ..., 250k) and y axis
according to the min/max value (I get ticks from -150 to +150). Is there
any way to relabel the x axis in a custom way? For example, let's say
that the x axis should display time values from 0 up to 250ns. Can I do
this?

This works for the most part:

palette

but still wondering if there is a why to the the whole line style and not
just the color (so I could change widths or ps based on data)

Hello,

I'm wondering if there is a way to set the line style based on a value from
the plotted data? I'm trying to have all of my data in a single file and
just iterate over it. I want to use a column value to indicate what color
the line should be draw (may have same type of data from multiple sources-
color is used to indicate type. I haven't been able to get anything to work
yet.

Sample data:
#yindex  data_label type_indicator start length
0  LABEL1 1 20 10
0  LABEL1 1 60 20


1 LABEL2 2 10 90


2 LABEL3 1 100 50

gnuplot file:
set style line 1 lt rgb 'black' lw 10
set style line 2 lt rgb "cyan" lw 10


I want to have something like this:

instead of:

[Gnuplot-info] Window and event chart

Hello all,

I'm new to gnuplot and am hoping to get some advice on how to
accomplish the goal I'm trying to get to and/or improvements to what I
have so far.

I'm trying to make a chart that shows windows of a given time duration
and specific events,  that occurred at a given time. The events are
grouped by type and source. The specific example is trying to show
which sensors in my house (motion, temperature, lights) are triggered
over a given time. I'd like to be able to show a window that indicates
the time a room is occupied and then samples from temperature in that
room. There may be multiple windows for the same run that I want to
have on the same line.

So far, here is what I have:

The questions I have:
1) Is there a better way to do the time windows other then using
objects? I really want to have all the data in data file. Is there a
way to have the object pull the enter/exit time from the data file? I
want to also add a label at the the ylabel for the windows. A yticmark
if you will. How can I add one that isn't tied to a data point (more
reason to want to pull windows from datafile. Just have some that y=0
that is labeled ROOM_OCCUPIED:      __________            ________

2) From what I have read online, I can't use a string for the y value.
That is why I have the mapping functions to take the index (column
one) and translate it to the name for the ytic. Is there a way to do
this will out the map?
3) I want to get the "magic text" out of the plot call? I have tried
everything but I can't seem to find a way to pass the string from the
datafile into the stylemap call. I have tried
stylemap($2),stylemap(stringcolumn(2)), and a few others. All fail.

I know I can probably just take the strings out of the datafile and
then just have two maps: source_index->source_name and
style_index->name (for key). But I wanted to ask if there might be an
easily or other way to do this. I'd love to not have those maps
(source map mainly since I want it to be dynamic from datafile/ styles
will not change that much) and be able to have all the strings in the
datafile itself. That will let the data files be more human readable
and have all the information to allow for a generic gnuplot script to
generate ( use iterator to through all the datafiles instead of
indexes within a single file).

Any suggestions or comments would be great. I'm sure I have done
things wrong/overly complex since I'm still new to gnuplot. Any coarse
corrections would be great before I get in too much of a rabbit hole.

This basically comes down to inserting additional line breaks in your data file. It's explained in more detail in "help data" but the extra line break creates a discontinuity. To get a plot like the one above, you will group all the points with the same y-coordinate together and insert an extra line break between each group of shared-y-coordinate points.

Thanks Trait,

It really does not automatically white out its background. I checked the
gnuplot help, but it does not have the option of opaque, and the default
does not white out the background.

I tried

set object rectangle from 0.5,-0.0175 to 1,0.1 fillcolor rgbcolor "white"

but it does not even white out anything. Actually, I cannot understand the
logic.

As far as I understand gnuplot, it saves effects in the ordering when they
appear and then gnuplot plots according to this effects. I can set
something, they will not appear until I issue plot command. That means plot
command is always latest to any effects defined before, thus nothing can
cover it unless specifically defined in the manual, say, set object
rectangle specifically says it will remove any lines etc (no matter where
the command is issue) but leaves labels intact.

This should happen automatically already?

I'd first pursue why it's not working as-is, but an alternative
approach is to define an opaque, filled rectangle and place it behind
the key. See "help set object".

This basically comes down to inserting additional line breaks in your

I am trying to achieve the effect putting the key on some white background
although there is originally some plots there. How can I possibly do that?
I tried to define a region and then clear it within mutliplot, but that
area is always overwritten by the following plots, and thus cannot be
whiten out.

[Gnuplot-info] automated label positioning

I am running a bash script that produces a series of plots using gnuplot.
Next to each plot I want to write some information about the plot (average
etc), and I achieve this using labels. I have the following settings (among
others):

This works fine most of the times, but randomly in some plots the labels are
mispositioned (examples attached - first one is ok, second one is
misplaced). Any idea why this might happen? And better yet, how to fix it?

I downloaded the sources here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuplot/files/gnuplot/4.6.0/ Unpacked
them and then did the standard
    ./configure --prefix=/usr/local
    make
    sudo make install
 sequence.

After getting a few of the dependencies I wanted installed, it went perfectly.

Hello,

I am trying to plot two graphs on the same plot.

The first is a simple x-y points plot:

plot myfile u 1:2

The second is a contour plot at level 0, which I can plot with the
following commands:

set contour
unset surface
set map view
set cntrparam levels discrete 0
splot a*y**3 + b(x)*y**2 + c(x)*y + d(x)

b(x), c(x) and d(x) are known polynomial functions on x.

Both use the same xrange and yrange.

How can I plot them both in the same graph?

Hello,

Maybe someone can help me with the following issue:

I'm trying to plot a complex quantity z which depends on two variables x and
y in form of a pm3d-plot,
where the phase phi(z) of the complex values is aimed to be encoded a color
from the hue-scale,
while the amplitude A(z) of the complex values determines the intensity of
that color.

The data are read from a file with specification of

x y phi(z) A(z)

in each column, where x changes slow and y changes fast.

The most obvious solution (at least from my point of view) to choose the
option

u 1:2:3:4

in combination with "splot" after definition of the color scheme via

set palette model HSV functions gray,1,1

did not yield the desired result. Then just the phase is plotted regardless
of the amplitude.

If you have an idea how to proceed, please let me know.

Well, there's no particular reason you have to use 'u' and 'v' as-is. 
You can re-define your functions fx(u,v), or you can call them with 
arguments other than plain 'u' and 'v':

set urange[0:1]
set vrange[0:1]

splot fx(0.2*u+1,v), fy(0.2*u+1,v), fz(v)

etc.
