Not really.  It just does exactly what you asked it to.  So whatever 
madness may have ensued: it was caused by you.

What did you expect to happen when you added "xticslabels(1)", other 
than what the documentation clearly says it does: put a tick label at 
every data point?  On what basis did you conclude this would be a useful 
thing to do in this use case?

Only by thinning out the data.  See "every".
