Hi Gnuplotters For years i have used the following script taken from the Gnuplot In Action book to generate my graphs: save "$0.gp" # Save commands to file set t push # Save commands to file set t png $1 # Store current terminal settings # options from second argument set o "$0.png" # Set output file name replot # Generate plot set o # Restore output to interactive terminal set t pop # Restore interactive terminal settings This could be invoked as: call 'export.gp' 'myplot' 'size 160,100' With the advent of Gnuplot 5.0 this no longer works due to changes in argument references from tokens $0 ... etc to string variables. Unfortunately i cannot get my head around it by way of examples i have seen. Could anyone please re-work the script to take recent developments into account that i may understand use. Dear List,
is it possible to input Unicode characters into the interactive console
window of Gnuplot running on Windows (7, 64bit) by typing with the keyboard?
System:
gnuplot 4.6.3
Windows 7, 64bit
(I change my Keyboard Layout with Alt+Shift between English, German and
Greek.)
Ιn the interactive console (wgnuplot_pipes.exe):
Terminal type set to 'wxt'
gnuplot> show locale
gnuplot LC_CTYPE German_Germany.1252
gnuplot encoding default
gnuplot LC_TIME German_Germany.1252
gnuplot LC_NUMERIC C
gnuplot> show encoding
nominal character encoding is default
however LC_CTYPE in current locale is German_Germany.1252
If I have a UTF8 encoded file "greek-xlabel.txt" with one line:
set xlabel 'angle α'
gnuplot> load 'greek-xlabel.txt'
gnuplot> plot sin(x)
outputs a nice graph with the x label being correct "angle α".
Copying and pasting the content of the file "greek-xlabel.txt" into the
console:
gnuplot> set xlabel 'angle á / °'
gnuplot> plot sin(x)
Unable to convert "angle á / °": the sequence is invalid in the current
charset (UTF-8), falling back to iso_8859_1
gives me an accented a (á) and an error.

If I switch my keyboard layout to Greek most of the characters are not
interpreted correctly by the gnuplot console.
alpha shows as á(accented a), theta as è (accented e), φ as ö ... and so on.
So, in general my System and gnuplot are able to deal with UTF8/Unicode.
But for quick plots I don't want to rely on \Symbol workarounds, or load
'greeklabels.txt" workarounds.
I guess I have to somehow change LC_CTYPE. But I couldn't find an option
in gnuplot.
In the gnuplot console: "set encoding utf8" and "set locale
'Greek_Greece.1253'" lead to:
gnuplot> show locale
gnuplot LC_CTYPE German_Germany.1252
gnuplot encoding utf8
gnuplot LC_TIME Greek_Greece.1253
gnuplot LC_NUMERIC C
But that does not help.
Any suggestions? Is this a problem of the gnuplot console under Windows?

Ah. I had hyphens in my filenames. Removing them cleared that error, but
now I get:
warning: Skipping data file with no valid points
I tried a non loop minimal example to ensure it's not a problem with my
datafile:
stats 'file.txt' prefix "file"
plot 'file.txt' every::file_index_max::file_index_max
This works fine.
Is there a way to look at what a command expanded into after the variables
were substituted?

But probably I would do it differently. Something like

Hi all, I have a question: I would like to run a *.plt file using windows scripting, i.e. using a batch (*.bat) file, and so I tried to do so, but I experienced that after running the batch file, the command window, that pops up does not close automatically, it keeps hanging there, and I have to close it manually. However, if I only use *.exe files in the batch, this cmd window closes automatically. I also included an exit command at the end of the batch file containing the running command of the *.plt file, but it doesn't change anything. Do you know how I could make that window close automatically? Thank you! Mat |

I'd let gnuplot mind the ranges for you.
set xrange [1:100]
plot x*x
pause -1
set logscale y
plot x*x
pause -1
unset logscale
set xrange [1:101]
plot x*x
pause -1
set logscale y
plot x*x
gnuplot will usually do a pretty nice job for you.

(x < A ? B : C) means: if x<A is true then return B, otherwise, return C. You only have to understand how -1 and 2 are plotted "with image". and if not assign to white"? I am not sure I understand the part after the

And with all due respect in turn, I don't think you know anything of my
programming background. In the past 40 years or so, I've used something
like over 40 languages, and that's counting all versions of FORTRAN as
one, all assemblers as one, all LISPs as one, all BASICs as one, all
ALGOLs as one, etc.

Here's a couple of practical examples of why I think Gnuplot is doing it
wrong (in the sense of not making it easy for the programmer, which last I
looked is the computer's job).

Is there an option to increase the pattern resolution? It would be shame if patterns are only available to plot sizes of 600x480 pixels. I already roamed the internet without any result. You can find packaged release candidates for version 5 on SourceForge.
-rc3 is very recent and will probably be the final version, with formal
release of gnuplot 5.0 at about year's end.
