I think you are correct in terms of how the parsers work, but the
effect for the user is quite different in the two languages. This is
because newlines are just whitespace in C, but statement terminators
in gnuplot.
Let me construct two arbitrary examples. For C let's use
printf("%s\n%s\n",
"foo",
"bar");
and for gnuplot
plot [0:2*pi] [-2:2] \
cos(x), \
tan(x)
Now in C there is no problem in commenting out one of the arguments
using “//”:
printf("%s\n%s\n",
// "foo",
"qux",
"bar");
does what you want. But in gnuplot
plot [0:2*pi] [-2:2] \
sin(x), \
# cos(x), \
tan(x)
does not do what I want, and
plot [0:2*pi] [-2:2] \
# cos(x), \
sin(x), \
tan(x)
is an error.
It is true that in C
printf("%s\n%s\n",
//"foo", \
"qux", \
"bar");
has the same problem, but why would you write it like that in the
first place? Conversely, how do you write the gnuplot example so that
it is easy to comment out one of the functions?
I am not saying that it is easy to implement a more user-friendly
behavior (I would not know, having never written a real-life parser).
But it would be a good thing, and the situation is certainly not the
same as in C.
To be fair, bash and python (to pick two more languages where newline
terminates a statement) do have problems similar to gnuplot's. But I
do not remember that I have ever actually run into the problem with
these two. In gnuplot, I often have plot commands with several lines
and would like to be able to comment one of them out quickly.

So what is the future of gnuplot (or its version numbers) then? Will
4.6 be the final release? Or will there be a 5.0? Or will it,

With the exception of Gnuplot, every parser I've seen strips out comments
first, then glues lines together. Shell, pfctl, you name it; it makes it
easy to temporarily comment out a line without having to worry about the
following line.
Except for Gnuplot; it does it backwards (IMHO). For example, when
playing with some line styles etc, I want to keep the original line "as
is", but merely commented out. Instead, I have to remove it bodily, and
make sure that there is a dummy line after it like so:
#
# Too small to be worth plotting.
# datafile using 1:($5) title 'Proxy', \
# datafile using 1:($6) title 'Pause', \
# Need a line after a commented continuation line.
#
plot blah blah with above lines removed
Most un-intuitive... Any chance that this can be fixed in 4.7, or at
least made an option for traditional users?

I found a method that satisfies my requirement for elegance, so for the

I found it when looking for something else (the definition of
"serendipity", I think). For the archives, it's e.g.:
set macros
style1 = "lines lt 4 lw 2"
style2 = "points lt 3 pt 5 ps 2"
range1 = "using 1:3"
range2 = "using 1:5"
plot "foo" @range1 with @style1, "bar" @range2 with @style2
(right out of "help macros", as it happens).

I see it as a probability problem: If you suppose a normal distribution, you calculate the mean, then the standard deviation sigma. If a value is over 2 sigma you have 95% confidence that the value is wrong. Consider the following made-up sequence: 1 2 2 1 3 3 1 10 2 4 1 I have a simple script which mashes out some stats, and amongst other things it reports the standard deviation as 2.49 (because of that outlier of 10). If I ignore it, I get a standard deviation of 1, which is a lot closer to reality. Is there some way to get Gnuplot to ignore outliers and substitute "missing", or do I have to write some sort of a filter for it? I can understand that the definition of "outlier" is a loose concept, but I'm thinking of defining an expected range for that particular column. The background here is that I've started analysing my daily spam load; there's a very-much-prototype graph over on www.horsfall.org/plotspam.pdf (80k), and I would very much like to auto-ignore the spike for "Banner" (the green one; it's those morons at Security Focus not being able to handle my SMTP banner and retrying immediately) and the spike for "Reject" (the red one; it's the idiots who treat it as a challenge). I understand that choosing the correct encoding is important when creating text labels (and so on) with characters outside the ASCII range. But how does gnuplot treat non-ASCII characters on input, that is, when reading a file in plot "file" u 3:4 I guess it's somewhat of a non-issue, as long as all the data in the file is numeric - that can be represented with strict ASCII. But what if the file contains string columns - do they get interpreted differently, based on set encoding? And can I generally rely on gnuplot to handle multi-byte characters safely (that is, recognize them as multibyte and store them accordingly)? Best, Ph. |

Hi, If I have a file with multiple datasets for which I want to multiplot x (column 0),y (column n) with a script. If column n of a dataset has NA at each line (set datafile missing "NA" called before in the script), gnuplot complains that x range is invalid and refuse to read the rest of the file. Is there a solution to this? Maybe display an empty plot? gnuplot 4.6 patchlevel 6 - Windows 7 Thank you. |

Hi,
I've made a script to draw multiple datasets from a file. With the same script, if I set the ouput to emf or svg, it displays multiple plots per output file as intended but if I use the same code and change the output to png or pngcairo, all output files are white and I suppose empty. Am I missing something with png output? Is there a special command I have to use for png and not for other terminal output?
Here are the relevant lines of the script:
... do for loop to plot to multiple files if more than 8 datasets in the file
{
set terminal emf size 1920,1080
set output datafile.'-'.j.'.emf'
set multiplot
set size 1,1
set origin 0,0
set multiplot layout 4,2 rowsfirst

I don't think eps files support transparency, so that is the reason you cannot convert them. I would suggest making two versions of your code, epslatex without transparency and cairolatex with transparency. Hi Dave, I don't think that you are even close to pushing gnuplot's limits. Continuing in my quest to push Gnuplot to its limits, I'd like to be able
to set the title of a graph to the dates of the first and last data. I'm
envisaging something like:
set title "Plot of Blah\nFrom $first to $last\n(Use at own risk)"
etc, where $first and $last are set from the first and last data lines.
I know that I can get this by reading the x-axis itself, but it's a bit
cleaner if it's part of the multi-line title.
Not knowing the innards of Gnuplot, I'm hoping that the title can be
printed dynamically in the first place, so a Small Matter Of
Programming(tm) should extract what I want, if possible.
Something like:
Grab first date => $first.
Keep reading until EOF.
Grab last date => $last.
sprintf("Plot of Blah\nFrom %s to %s", $first, $last) into title.
Plot.
(My next question will be whether it's possible to print the names of the
script and data files, when I print the graph date; I'm a data-driven sort
of guy.)

You can set up the labels on the axes just about any way you want. See
'help set xtics'.
One nice feature is 'set xtics add', or in your case 'set ytics add',
which will allow you to add and format individual labels.

Yeah, I'm still plotting my vital stats; it provides great feedback about trends (even my doctor likes it!) and I recommend it. Anyway... I'd like to put markers on the y-axes, say, at 100 and 140 for the systolic blood pressure etc; extra brownie points if they're in the same colour as the line type. I can't seem to find a demo that does it (and I've yet to buy the book), so is there a neat way? Thanks. -- Dave |
