I agree.  The PDF driver appears to wrap colors
after 12 of them.  It sure would be nice if these
terminal implementations used line styles when 
the colors wrap.  Looking at the PDF driver, it
looks as though the driver defines a larger number
of colors but that the PDF library implementation
is somehow wrapping.

They probably should. For a 1 time application, order the data in 
Excel/OpenOffice, that'll do the trick. For several applications, consider 
writing an ordering script to preprocess your data. Perl should work (with 
DateManip, for example)

Sorry, I forget to tell you my gnuplot version.
Version 4.0 patchlevel 0.
Ssytem: Linux 2.4.22-openmosix-2

I got some data identified by time. However, they are not sorted by time =
order.
When I used the command
"plot 'data.out' using 1:2 with l"
The curve wasn't drawn in the right way.
The data look like:
time    value
12:40    9
12:45    3
12:30    14
12:42    8
12:36    20

I am new to gnuplot and am trying to plot many

If you're even looking at makefile.unx, that means you failed to so much 
as glance at README or INSTALL before barging into this project.  Please 
fix that serious mistake.

line editing and history when in gnuplot, on Red Hat linux 8.0 (I have
defined READLINE in makefile.unx and recompiled) but the arrow keys
don't work. I only get the emacs commands to edit the commands.

It's not exactly missing --- it's just not presented in the shape of 
'set graphical_object' type commands.  Instead, you have to prepare and 
plot special-purpose datasets that define these shapes in plot styles 
like 'with filledcurves' or 'with lines'.  Since these datasets can be 
inlined, you don't even need an external file.  E.g. here's a square
drawn into a sine curve plot:

	plot sin(x), '-' notitle w l
	  0.5 0.5
	  0.75 0.5
	  0.75 0.75
	  0.5 0.75
	  0.5 0.5

I do not know whether you do read stupid suggestions from stupid users.
One (obvious) facility is missing in gnuplot, namely the possibility of 
drawing
simple figures (filled and/or unfilled) in a graph. I am thinking of 
commands similar
to the

set arrow

command, i.e. something like

set rectangle coordinates fillpattern

or

set circle coordinates/radius fillpattern

or

set polygon definition fillpattern

Is there any chance that this will be added in future versions?

How do you move the title *IN* the plot command in gnuplot?
If just the title, it's easy, i.e.,

title "hours" -10,-20

would output the title "hours" with an x-y offset of [10,-20]
characters.

But I want to move the title *IN* the plot command, i.e.,
move the title in

plot "time.dat" using 1:2 title 'hours' with line

Thanks to both for the ideas.

I thought of changing the date format but the data file I use (a csv file) =

is generated by a monitoring tool
and thus I have no control on it.

Also, since it is a csv file I have defined ',' as the column separator.=20
This prevent me for cheating with the "using"
values.

It looks like I will have to pre-process my file. I will probably use awk=20
to remove one column.
Makes it complicated... ;-)

That's going to be tricky --- if nothing else, the 'EST' thingy is 
almost guaranteed to be a royal pain.

It'd be a good deal easier to parse a format meant for computers, not 
humans, to read.  'date' can produce a rich variety of such formats.

Where 'this text' is the weekday name... yes, it must.

You have to avoid it in both, effectively.  But you can ignore the 
weekday column in the data file by increasing the 'using' column number 
by one, so it can still be in the file if you have to.

But your best option is to choose a more suitable timestamp format in 
whatever application is producing these data.

I am fighting in trying to read the standard output of the Unix date

In the official Gnuplot documentation I can read that "the format string 
must exclude this text".
Does this mean that the day in my example must be excluded from my data 
file or does it mean
that there is a way to exclude it in the format string itself.

An little example on this topic in the documentation would help.

In that case, it appears your implementation is setting this pipe to 
fully buffered mode, and you have to explicity flush the buffer for the 
command to actually be sent.  You do that by following the above 
sequence by a

	fflush(plot_pipe);

Do that after every group of commands, but in particular after every 
'plot' or other command that you want executed immediately.

This is how I'm supposed to work with pgnuplot.exe:

FILE * plot_pipe =3D _popen("pgnuplot.exe", "w");
fprintf(plot_pipe, "plot x\n");

But when I do this nothing happens...

I did this in desperation:

FILE * plot_pipe =3D _popen("pgnuplot.exe", "w");
for (k=3D0; k<10000; k++)
    fprintf(plot_pipe, "plot x\n");

And it worked!! But it sends "plot x" hundreds of times...
Then if i write another fprintf out of the "for" sentence, it is not =
piped to gnuplot.

I'm totally lost. How can I work with pgnuplot.exe in a "clean" way??

You misunderstood what that option does.  'dashed' does not mean that 
*all* lines will be dashed --- there are solid linetypes in 'dashed' mode.

IIRC there's a pointtype that displays as a circle.  See the 'test' output
page of this driver.
