Hi everyone,
Can someone please let me know how to correctly make a map
with points located on the continents on the Earth. I looked up the
world.dem stuff on the gnuplot site and found that they refer to 2 files,
world.dat and world.cor, does anyone what these files contain or where I can
download them from?
I have a list of Latitude and Longitudes which I would lie to plot on the
map of the Earth, and would like to use gnuplot for it. Does anyone know if
using Google Earth would be easier/better for a 2d image?
Thanks,
-A

Hello, I need help. I've been tasked with building a version of gnuplot 4.2 using wxWidgets and gtk2. I'm doing this on a SLES 9 system, so I downloaded many of the constituent kits, built them along with gtk2 and wxWidgets and "successfully" linked a gnuplot executable. I start gnuplot: ./gnuplot Terminal type set to 'wxt' gnuplot> plot x*x Failed to initialize wxWidgets. gnuplot> Here is a list of kit versions that I'm using: atk-1.18.0.tar.gz cairo-1.4.2.tar.gz gd-2.0.34.tar.gz glib-2.12.11.tar.gz gnuplot-4.2.0.tar.gz gtk+-2.10.11.tar.gz libpng-1.2.16.tar.gz pango-1.16.1.tar.gz wxWidgets-2.8.2.tar.gz zlib-1.2.3.tar.gz What can I do to diagnose the failure? Is there a log somewhere I can view? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks, Ron |

I have to disagree. The way you describe your data, what is required to display them is peak finding, not binning. You obviously want to display the position of those peaks, not their height. A colour map is rather certainly not the best way of displaying such data. > Perhaps I wasn't clear also, the data files I'm working with are 150 KB > at most, it's only when padding them with zeros to give a dense grid > structure for gnuplot that they become unwieldy, up to 250 MB. That's plainly unplottable --- your entire screen doesn't have that many pixels, not even to begin with the actual reslution of human eyesight. You're on an impossible mission there, trying to display data with more x and y resolution than can possibly fit on your screen. Colour-coded impulses or points would make a lot more sense for this data set. There's nothing smooth or continuous about it. We're talking about a bed-of-nails here. |

I appreciate what you're saying, but the distributions I'm dealing with by nature consist of finely separated sharp peaks, such that the high-res binning is required to discriminate them. For example, out of 10 000 points, some bins may have over 1000 points even at this resolution. This is a characteristic of the data, it is not due to noise. Yes, you can adjust the xrange and yrange to zoom in on clusters of peaks and get a more typical histogram for local regions, but it's nice to get an overall picture as well, which is what I'm trying to achieve here. Perhaps I wasn't clear also, the data files I'm working with are 150 KB at most, it's only when padding them with zeros to give a dense grid structure for gnuplot that they become unwieldy, up to 250 MB. It's rather like sparse vs dense matrix representations. Plotting with impulses or just the isolines, without forming a surface, seems to achieve reasonable results, although I think the pm3d surface plot more clearly presents the data. Is there some way of interpolating and resampling between points of the isolines to join them up into a surface, without explicitly entering all the points into the data file? Cheers, Lawrence |

But I'm afraid you didn't follow the first rule of histogram generation: think before you bin. You appear to have binned way finer than your data supports. As a rule of thumb histogram bins with zero entries should be the exception, not the rule. Statistically the average count per bin should be at least roughly 5, because smaller counts are dominated by randomness. Put another way: there's no way the display of your histogram can faithfully reproduce 256 MBytes' worth of data --- even a rather high-res screen image stores nowhere near that much information. I.e. even if gnuplot managed to plot that file, the result would be completely useless. |

Hello, Firstly, thank you very much to the developers of gnuplot, I've been using it for some time, fantastic piece of software. I'm having a bit of trouble at the moment producing a surface plot with pm3d, however, so thought I'd ask for some help. For interest sake, this is a plot of the results of a particle filter, a sequential MCMC (Markov Chain Monte Carlo) sampling technique. On the x axis is time, the y axis value, and the z axis the density of the probability distribution. Simply put, I'm representing a two-dimensional probability distribution as a 3d histogram. The data I'm working with consists of individual samples from the probability distribution. This is "binned" into grid data in a preprocessing step by dividing the x and y axes into regular intervals to form a grid of squares, and counting the number of samples that fall into each square, this count becomes the density for the z axis. Now, this is all well and good, and I can produce a pm3d surface plot, fantastic. However, the data I'm working with is sparse. That is to say, many of those bins have no samples falling in them, and thus have a value of zero. To produce plots I've had to pad out my data files with all the zero size bins, so that all the isolines forming the surface have the same number of data points and the surface forms up nicely. For some plots this is fine, although they still take a long time to produce, but for most it makes the data files enormous, 250 MB some of them. Gnuplot nobly tackles the task regardless, but it runs out of memory very quickly trying to plot all those points! The plot is also too complicated to feasibly rotate and zoom in on etc on the screen, which would be useful for exploring these distributions. If I don't pad out the data files with zero size bins, the isolines don't have the same number of points, and the plot has lots of artifacts from trying to join points between isolines. On the other hand, it is quickly drawn and I can rotate it etc no problem. So what I'm wondering is if there's some way of doing this that: a) Maintains the sparse representation of my data files, that is, only have non-zero bins in there. b) Efficiently produces a plot, as when I don't pad the data files with zero size bins. c) Produces a "correct" plot, as when I do pad the data files with zero size bins. I've tried a few things: a) dgrid3d: unfortunately the way the weighting works in this confounds what I'm trying to represent. If it could do some sort of nearest neighbour thing instead that could work. b) Making sure every non-zero bin has its adjacent bins explicitly defined in the file, even if these are zero bins. This makes the isolines correct, but doesn't fix the problem of how to join them to form the surface. c) I've been looking at the interpolation features in the docs, but I'm not sure if and how they can be applied to this situation. If I could linearly interpolate between the defined points in each isoline (defining adjacent points as in (b)), then resample at regular intervals so that each isoline had the same number of points, that would be perfect. Would anyone have some ideas on how to tackle this? Cheers, Lawrence |

Hi,
Looks like I am not having much luck here. I am creating the gnuplot commands
through a perl program and launching the gnuplot program using the system call.
Also for the plot that comes up hitting m toggles the mouse coordinate display
in the bottom and I am unable to do other operations like zoom etc. The mouse
coordinates for the time still appears in scientific notation.
# Make the gnu plot commands file
open fileOUT, ">gnu.cmds";
print fileOUT "set title \"Price vs Date\"\n";
print fileOUT "set xlabel \"Time\"\n";

Thanks in advance...

Hi I am using gnuplot Version 4.0 patchlevel 0 on a FC4 system. The data to generate the plots is present in a datafile and I am using the batch mode to generate the plots. In my plots the x-axis is the timescale. The mouse coordinates display the number of seconds since 2000 in the lower left corner of the graph when the mouse is moved over the graph. In the interactive mode (when issuing commands through gnuplot> ) I am able to control the format of this using set mouse mouseformat. However in the batch mode this does not seem to have any effect and the x-coordinate of the mouse is still displayed in seconds since 2000. Is there any way to change the mouse coordinate display effectively for the batch mode plots? I would prefer the time to be shown in date time format rather than the seconds since 2000 for the mouse coordinate. Thanks. |

Peace be with you, Sorry for contacting you in this manner.I am presently hospitalised in Bahrain for Squamous cell Carcinoma(Cancer of the throat).I discovered your contact information by accident through a search engine while trying to locate a long lost friend.I felt you might be interested in assisting me in completing a task that is of utmost importance.Due to the terminal state of my illness i have a short time to live and i have a cash deposit of twenty million U.S dollars in a deposit company in Europe whose maturation date will soon expire and has to be urgently retrieved. I have no legal heir and the behaviour of my extended family members in recent times made me loose my trust on them.what the situation requires is that i nominate a claimant to this deposit which nobody else knows about for now.i have a contact in the deposit company who will faciltate the process of retrieving the deposit and transfer of the funds.I have no use for money for myself anymore,so i would like you to disburse 70% of the fund to charity organisations and 25% for your efforts after completing the process and the rest 5% for my contact in the deposit company who will faciltate the hitch-free completion of the process. This is totally legal and safe as you will see, it only requires absolute trust, transparency. And also confidentiality due to the large amount involved.I am sure you can understand that the need for absolute confidentiality cannot be overstressed.All i require from you is sincerity and dedication. If you can do this just send a reply through this email address for further details. Yours Sincerely, Nedal |

<style> <1Well, I've made it through my first two weeks back to work and I've survived!! LOL (I had tendon repair and a tenosynovectomy on my PT When I saw my surgeon on the 3rd of April, he told me that I could (geez, I needed the directions to remember how to put the darn thing on!) I have to wear the boot when I go out anywhere for awhile yet. huh?...go back to work for 2 weeks and have a week off! ) I really wasn't ready for a week off after being off for over 8 weeks. (geez, I can't believe I'm saying that!!!) I've been walking around with the soft tie up support brace in my didn't work either. Dear Gnuplot team, Could you advise me please how can I make axis tics in such a way that only tics labels are put to the plot without ticks themselves? Thanks to all the people who responded :) . My problem was due to (as has been clearly pointed out) that 1) the data was not in the correct format, I did not separate it into blocks 2) No need to use dgrid3d if the data is OK The figures are perfect now :) Thanks, -A On 3/27/07, Anirban Banerjee <ban...@gm...> wrote: > > Hi all, > Gnuplot n00b here :) ... my question might seem a bit naive. I have data file with data in the following format > x y z > x1 y1 z1 > . > . > . > and so on ... The problem starts here, already. This format is not useful for plotting as a pm3d map. It lacks information about which points are supposed to be connected to which other ones, in the surface you're plotting. > x ranges from 1 to 500 , y from 1 to 6 and z from 1 to 100 . > > when I use splot "data" u 1:2:3 w lines/points I can see that the scale > on the z axis is 0 to 100, but as soon as I type > > set dgrid3d > splot "data" u 1:2:3 w pm3d > > the resulting graph seems to get the z axis scaled down to 0 to 18 or 30 > if I use set dgrid3d 30,30 .. why is this so..why is the z axis being > scaled??? It isn't the z axis that's being rescaled --- it's your data. That's what dgrid3d does: it averages data z values, so the z range of its output will typically be smaller than that of the input. Now, if only your data were in proper gridded format, you wouldn't need dgrid3d, and this whole problem wouldn't exist. So I strongly suggest you read 'help glossary' and 'help splot datafile' about grid structure. |

Hi all,
Gnuplot n00b here :) ... my question might seem a bit naive. I
searched the list for similar problems and found some answers but none were
exactly the same, and hence this mail.
The issue I am facing is while trying to plot a 3d graph with splot using
pm3d. I have data file with data in the following format
x y z
x1 y1 z1
.
.
.
and so on ...
x ranges from 1 to 500 , y from 1 to 6 and z from 1 to 100 .
when I use splot "data" u 1:2:3 w lines/points I can see that the scale on
the z axis is 0 to 100, but as soon as I type
set dgrid3d
splot "data" u 1:2:3 w pm3d
the resulting graph seems to get the z axis scaled down to 0 to 18 or 30 if
I use set dgrid3d 30,30 .. why is this so..why is the z axis being scaled???
Should I turn of autoscaling..? Just as an aside the data is pretty "spiky"
lots of near 100 z values surrounded by nearly 0's..etc..
Would really appreciate any advice on this :) .
Thanks,
-A

I failed to find a viable way to convert 3d plots from gnuplot to the Universal 3D (u3d) file format. This would make it possible to include 3d plots via pdfLaTeX and movie15.sty into PDF documents and allow the user to look at the plot from all directions. If anybody knows about a way to achive this (freeware/open source prefered), I would like to hear about. If not, what's about developing a u3d terminal? Would this be feasible?
