Hi there I've only just come across gnuplot and it all seems excellent so far. I have a plot to do and I was wondering whether gnuplot would be a good piece of software to do it. I'll have a matrix file like so 1 1 20 1 2 45 1 3 46 2 1 45 etc ... If one imagines the first two columns as 'objects' the third column is a measure of similarity between those two objects. I want to create a 2D grid - it will probably be about 40 squares by 40 squares in size. I would like the measure of similarity between the two objects to be highlighted as a specific colour. I've looked at pm3d plots but I'm not even sure whether thats the best place to start. Any tips very much appreciated. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/newbie-asking-for-help-with-%27matrix%27-plot-tf4628615.html#a13216295 Sent from the Gnuplot - User mailing list archive at Nabble.com. |

Thank you for the respond. Let me clarify.
I am trying to reproduce a plot made by other people, so I know where
contour should be in the plain. As an additional check I used "dot plot"
technique to plot my data, like that
plot "bdr1-omgh2.dat" using 2:($3>0.13 ?$1:0) w points,\
"bdr1-omgh2.dat" using 2:(($3<=3D0.13 && $3>=3D0.095 )?$1:0) w poi=
nts,\
"bdr1-omgh2.dat" using 2:($3<0.095 ?$1:0) w points
This gave me the expected result, so my data is correct. I even I ask my
friend to make these contours with another plotting program using my data
and they were in the right place.
Contours should be located in the low X half of the plain and go, more or
less, on 40 degree angle to Y-axis from the lower left corner till the uppe=
r
end of Y. But the contour line made by the script I shown (you were
correct, I forgot to write "set contour base", "unset surface", "set view
0,0" commands, but they were in the script all the time, sorry for the
confusion) produce contour lines in the *lower right* corner of the (X,Y)
plain, where, according to the picture made by the above "plot" command, Z
is <0.095
I have no idea what is going on with gnuplot. Hope you can help me. Thanks.

could you post sample data and two plot scripts (plot all data, plot slice)? Gentlemen,
using Gnuplot version 4.2 with windows 98
I take slices of a 3d surface in splot by setting the range on one dimension to a minute amount.(and maybe you have a better way of taking slices). But the plot that appears is not a line but scattered dots. That is because all that appears is the plane's intercept with the 9x9 mesh.
Is there any way of replacing the 9x9 mesh with a solid surface (or even a denser mesh) so that the 2d slice of the 3d surface would be more like a line than random dots?
Thanks much,
Mike L.

So I'm again replying to my own post. A record... tipote on #gnuplot told me there's already a bugreport for it, and the attached patch fixes this: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1810957&group_id=2055&atid=102055 So if anyone stumbles upon the same problem, here's the answer :-) Thorben |

if all data are in one file then it would be a good idea to have the
data of one tape in a block, separated by 2 empty lines from the
next block.
then it's easy to plot separate curves for the different tapes with
plot "dlt-data" index 0 using 1:4 title 'Corrected Errors/GB Tape 1', \
"" index 1 using 1:4 title 'Corrected Errors/GB Tape 2', \
"" index 2 using 1:4 title 'Corrected Errors/GB Tape 3'
the data file could then look like
----- dlt-data start ------
2001/01/01 11:53 DLT7000-002 290
2001/01/01 11:54 DLT7000-002 100
2001/01/01 11:55 DLT7000-002 10
2001/01/01 11:56 DLT7000-002 200
2001/01/01 11:53 DLT7000-003 90
2001/01/01 11:54 DLT7000-003 300
2001/01/01 11:55 DLT7000-003 210
2001/01/01 11:56 DLT7000-003 100
2001/01/01 11:53 DLT7000-004 190
2001/01/01 11:54 DLT7000-004 230
2001/01/01 11:55 DLT7000-004 60
2001/01/01 11:56 DLT7000-004 90
----- dlt-data end ------

Hi Guys I have plotted some data using splot. Unfortunately, the data I have is a bit rough, to say the least. Therefore, I was wondering if there was a "Smooth Bezier" type command which could be used with splot. Smooth Bezier has helped me out big time in 2d and so I was wondering if it had a 3d cousin! Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. on a unix system:
STARTING_TIME = system("awk \"{if (NR == 1) print \\\$1}\" filename")
or
write a little program in the programming language of your choice
which returns the 1st word of the 1st line of a file and call it using the
'system' function.
or
temp = system ("cat filename")
STARTING_TIME = word(temp,1)
(replace 'cat' by e.g. 'type' on a dos/win system,
will not work for large files, because the whole data is written into a
variable)
or
temp = system ("head -n1 filename")
STARTING_TIME = word(temp,1)

Hello,
I'm running gnuplot cvs head from today (because I want to try out
the pdfcairo terminal, transparency etc.)
But I still need the pdf terminal for compatibality.
And option setting doesn't work:
What's going on here?
gnuplot> set terminal pdf noenhanced
^
unknown or ambiguous terminal type; type just 'set terminal' for a list
gnuplot> set terminal pdf
Terminal type set to 'pdf'
Options are ' noenhanced fname 'Helvetica' fsize 6 linewidth 1.0 '
Thanks,
Thorben

Hi, for a plot I have in a datafile the time in ms stored in the first column. The time does not start from 0, but something like 1191342868.608249 For the plot I just want to plot the relative elapsed time. What I want to do is to store the starting time in a variable STARTING_TIME and plot the date with a call like plot filename using ($1-STARTING_TIME):10 title "MOTCUR_M1" with lines How can I access this data field?
