The data file should be okay. Anyway, i find i can embed shell command
into plot, so using awk, it draws linespoints as expected.

which should do the same as:

The problem is that you hwave way too many undefined points in your 
input.  Lines can only be drawn between consequtive valid points.  Looks 
like there are no two valid points without an invalid one between them, 
in your entire file.  In this case, a simple 'every 2' filter might work 
better than the above.

Correct.  Putting that many lines in there would be distracting rather 
than helpful, anyway.

to my knowledge, only 'by hand':

set arrow 1 from 0.5,1.5 to 40.5,1.5 front nohead
set arrow 2 from 0.5,2.5 to 40.5,2.5 front nohead
...
set arrow 39 from 0.5,39.5 to 40.5,39.5 front nohead
set arrow 40 from 1.5,0.5 to 1.5,40.5 front nohead
set arrow 41 from 2.5,0.5 to 2.5,40.5 front nohead
...
set arrow 78 from 39.5,0.5 to 39.5,40.5 front nohead

it would be a good idea to produce a script containing
these commands and reading it in whenever it's needed.

Hi there

Thanks to help from this forum, I have been able to create a 40 by 40 image
plot. 

Each 'cell' in the plot has a value that is indicated by a colour. But there
are no lines drawn to show individual cells.

Is there an option for me to do this in gnuplot?

Only by translating them to recognizable (decimal, or hexadecimal 
floating-point) formats before passing them to gnuplot.

How to plot with hex data? The x is c1 and the  y is c2. Set format "%x"? I

Hello

I have reported the results here to the octave ML.
The octave developer team has decided that the dot plot uses 'pt 0'.

As I mentioned before the octave team still thinks that 'pt 0' is too small
but the defaut setting of the dot plot of gnuplot is 'pt 0', 
so the octave team decided that the dot plot for the octave is to be 'pt 0'.  

Apart from the octave ML member's stand point (I am not a developer of octave 
but a member of the ML), I also think that the dot size in gnuplot terminals is 
hopefully to be changable.  From technical problems, it is difficult for all terminals
but some terminals (e.g. x11, win, wxt, ps, and emf) to be the dot size changable.

I think it is better to stop this topic by this mail.

You forgot to say so, but you appear to be talking about pm3d plots 
there.  The answer is either the "depthorder" option to 'set pm3d', or 
"You can't --- gnuplot doesn't do what you need".

different file .dat. The result is that the last plot is always the one on
the foreground, even when it is hidden by the other surface. How could I
solve this problem?

I summarize what you want to say,

The 'pt 0' is the defaut dot for the gnuplot for all terminals.

I am not good at English and I consulted dictionary and did not find it.

But I think that  every devise becomes to be high resolution at present 
so that pixel numbers for dot is favabale to be changable.

There's no general reason 'ps' wouldn't apply to dots, too.  Some 
terminal drivers won't support it, though.  The simple pixel-based ones,

In the Octave ML, the dot style defenition is now discussing.
Every member knows that 'pt 0' is common dot style for all terminals.
However, the current octave set dot style, pt 7 ps 1 because 'pt 0' is too small.
But 'pt 7' is not always filled circle for all terminal.

I also think 'pt 0' is too small to see on some terminals.
(For example 'post term color').
Of course this depends on the computer display.

Can I change the dot size of the terminal ?
If the size of dot can be changable by the option 
I think the discussions in the octave ML will go to be finished.
