I've actually followed the instructions a few times, but kept getting this message:

Hello, can gnuplot draw a piecewise constant graph from a simple data file?

Here is an example: Let the data file be like the following:

0 0
1 1
2 2

Then I want a graph that is 0 on x \in [0,1), 1 on [1,2), and so on. Is 
that possible in gnuplot without modifying the data file?

I guess it is possible to run a complicated series of command to filter 
the data file as gnuplot reads it, but I'm would like to be able to do 
something along the lines of:

plot "data.txt" using 1:2 blabla

where "blabla" is some setting that specifies that gnuplot should use a 
piecewise constant "interpolation" between data points. In fact, one 
should also be able to specify if any vertical lines should be visible 
or not.

Right now I generate a modified data file to accomplish this (containing 
additional data points):

0 0
0.99 0
1 1
1.99 1
2 2

(Sorry if you get this message twice; I wasn't sure how to use this mailing linst)


I have a file Experiments.txt containing hundred of experiments always something like


#x first Experiment, y first Experiment, x second Experiment, y second Experiment, x third Experiment, y third Experiment....
13 7 15 8 12 9
15 9 17 9 17 10

Here is the plt-File I used trying to plot them and the problems I got. Maybe you can help me? Many thanks

#plot N(1), N(2), N(3) #doesn't work either, maybe a problem of the double quotation mark, but I don't know how to get rid of them at the end of the string

Do you want to use gnuplot function from other programs?

The easiest way is to use console gnuplot (current cvs 4.3) and control via pipe.

You're going about this in completely the wrong way.  You have to forget 
about projects, adding files to them, and all that.

Get a text editor and use that to read text files README, INSTALL and 
config\makefile.nt, in that order.  Do what they tell you to.  Exactly.

Sorry I do not have enough knowledge for msvc build.

There is a possibilty you have to use makefile.msw

I am a mingw+msys user for gnuplot build so that the knowlede of MSVC is limited.

Please wait until MSVC expert will apear.

I've as well tried to compile all the C files from gnuplot src folder &
add the header files (H files) in the project Header Files folder..
apparently 'strings.h' and 'iosl.h' files are missing.. where can I get
those files?

However, I pointed out that makefile.cyg is makefiel for mingw on cygwin
not for MSVC.

You should use makefile.nt and use command line use of cl.exe etcs.
First you excute cmd.exe. After that you will call 
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\vcvarsall.bat

to set enviromnental variables.
Please change makefile.nt according to your environment.
Please read carefully comments that are written in makefile.nt

[Gnuplot-info] Compile GNUPLOT ver. 4.2 using VC++ 2008

Hi!
 
I'm trying to compile GNUPLOT ver. 4.2 (makefile.cyg) using Visual
Studio C++ 2008 (OS: Windows XP).
 
I created a new project, select Win32 Console Application (application
type: console, empty project) and named my project 'makefile'. Next, I
added a new item (.cpp file) and named my .cpp file 'makefile.cpp'. I
copied & pasted code, & saved the file. Then, I renamed the file to
'makefile.c' and compile it.
 
This is the error that I received:

[Gnuplot-info] Label with filled background

Hello,
I am using gnuplot 4.2 PL0 on an ubuntu-computer.

I have a graph with a key, label and a grid (and some more, of course).
Now I  would like to have the grid disappear behind the label-area, just
as it does behind the key.

"h label" does not suggest any possibility for a color-filled
background, which could do the trick.

Is there a way to do this?

in the development version (4.3) of gnuplot it is possible to determine
the actual position inside a data block - see 'help pseudocolumns' - and
treat data rows differently depending on their position.

e.g.
a=0.5
splot "measurements.dat" w l, "" every 1::0::0 w p, "" us
1:2:(column(0)>0?a*$3:$3) w lp

scaling of 'vectors' between subsequent data points could also be done:

a=0.5
splot "measurements.dat" w l, \
   '' every 1::0::0 w p, \
   '' us \
      (column(0)==0?(x1=$1,$1):x1+($1-x1)*a)\
      :(column(0)==0?(y1=$2,$2):y1+($2-y1)*a)\

Nobody answers this question, so I spent nearly 4 hours to hack Gnuplot in
order to find out how to use this function for specifying color from data
file. I didn't read its source code before, so starting from the scratch.

The requirement:
Gnuplot4.3 source code,
grep 
That's enough.

This post only represents my own opinion, so there may be some faults,
welcome to point them out.
Because, when I hacked the source code, I added a  few print statements,
maybe there exists some wrong line numbers.
But I wrote out the full function names and variable names, wrong line
numbers don't effect reading.

1) Where is the main function for starting
The entry main function is in "plot.c": int gnu_main(), or int main()

2) Which function plots circles or other objects
void place_objects() : graphics.c
In this function, you can find "case OBJ_CIRCLE". You can also see
"do_arc(x1, y1, radius, e->arc_begin, e->arc_end,0)"

do_arc() really draws circles.:term.c
One of its parameters "style" controls the drawing style.

3) The drawing style mentioned in (2) is set in place_objects and actually
from object* listhead which is the first parameters in this function. We can
also find out that this parameter is a list of objects, so gnuplot plots
objects in this list one by one.

4) Which function invokes place_objects() and give parameter "object*
listhead"
void do_plot(): graphics.c
On line 1567 of graphics.c, it invokes place_object(first_object,****),
first_object is a global variable which a head of object list.
void refresh_request(): command.c --this function invokes
"do_plot(first_plot)"
first_plot is also a global variable set in eval_plots(): plot2d.c
On line 1414 in this file, we see top_ptr=&(first_plot)
In this file, we also see a imporant variable "struct curve_poins*
this_plot", this variable specifies the drawing style. We can find many
drawing properties set in this function. But the most important statement is
line 1993:(get_data(this_plot))

5)get_data(this_plot): plot2d.c
In this function, we can find "TBOOLEAN variable_color", it decides whether
we can specify color dynamically.
Another important variable for setting color value (RGB value) is "double
variable_color_value ". This value is real color value for drawing objects.

This function also points out:
the min_cols and max_cols  of data file for drawing circle are 3 and 4.
(line 472)
The comment says /*3+ possible variable color*/
So we really confirm that color for each circle can be set at the 4th column 
of  data file.

we can see that the value of variable_color_value is from data file:
"variable_color_value = v[--j]"
v[] is a array read from data file. This array is also processed through
some function specified at "using func($1):func($2)***"

6) Now the important is: how to let variable_color ==true
on line 340 in plot2d.c, we can find out two conditions can make this value
true.
We track the first condition,
"current_plot->lp_properties.pm3d_color.type==TC_RGB"

color.type is set at "parse_colorspec()", while "parse_colorspec()" is
invoked in lp_parse(). Both functions are in misc.c.
>From " lp_parse()", we know that we need to specify "lt" in the command line
to invoke parse_colorspec()
>From "parse_colorspec" we need to specify "rgb " in command.

In conclusion, to set circle color from data file, we should:
a, the format of data file
x y radius color_clue
 
ps: color_clue can be the real RGB value or any varialbe which we can
calculate RGB from it

b, the rgb command
plot "data_file" using 1:2:3:yourColorFunc($4, or the total four columns)
with circles lt rgb var
or
plot "data_file" using 1:2:3:yourColorFunc($4, or the total four columns)
with circles lt rgbcolor var
or
plot "data_file" using 1:2:3:yourColorFunc($4, or the total four columns)
with circles lt rgbcolor variable
or
plot "data_file" using 1:2:3:yourColorFunc($4, or the total four columns)
with circles lt rgb variable

(rgb==rgbcolor; var==variable)
This command is enough, we do not need to do any other command.

Gnuplot4.3 has a new type for drawing circle, and in its manual, it says "An
optinal 4th column may be used to specify color information". But it doesn't
give any example of using this function. All its examples for drawing circle
are specifying color statically.

What I want to do is: I want to draw circles using following input data,
each circle is defined by one line, the 4th column is the painting color.
What should I do???? I tried 
plot "file" using 1:2:3:4 with circles lc rgb $4
plot "file" using 1:2:3:4 with circles lc rgb variable
they all don't work.
Can someone give me some hints?

have done set timefmt correctly, that should not be a problem. That's true

[Gnuplot-info] plotting binary data with many columns

Hi,

I am trying to plot from a binary file written by Fortran, which has more
than 100 columns.
When the number of columns is small (e.g. 4 columns), I know I can plot the
first column by

plot 'file' binary format='%*float%4float%*float' u 0:1

(leading and trailing '%*float' are due to Fortran output)

The largest number accepted by this format is 9 columns. Beyond that, the
format fails. For example, I can not use format='%*float%100float%*float'.

Is there a better way of plotting data in such a binary format?

the dates are to be modified:
