[Gnuplot-info] column operation with time data

Dear Plotters,

I hope you can help me, I have two diagrams that I would like to match and
generate the average of both the time and the value data.
...
plot "blabla.dat" u ($2+$4)/2:($6+$8)/2
...
This would be the simplest method to plot the average values both in the x
and y axis. But I have elapsed time in the x axis and it seems that the
program does not want to execute the simple column operation in the command
(regarding the time, $2 and $4 columns). The output says " empty xrange. .
."
 I used the set timefmt "%H:%M:%S" and the set xdata time commands prior to
the plot.

Hello

The gnuplot with wxt terminal is built by Michael.
The original gnuplot on windows does not support wxt terminal.

Michael is the maintainer of octave 3.0.1 (msvc).
So question should me made at he...@oc... but not here.

Did you try octave-3.0.3 ?
This is revised version and the version of gnuplot is upadated to 4.3 (cvs).

However I show that quick hack: it is not use wxt terminal but use windows terminal like the
octave-mingw by Benjamin Linder.

Please modify the file 'octaverc'
$(octave folder path)\share\octave\3.0.3\m\startup\octaverc

Note that $(octave folder path) depends on your install condition.

In the file 'octaverc'
 
# Set gnuplot default terminal to wxt
putenv ("GNUTERM", "wxt");
 |
 V
putenv ("GNUTERM", "win");

This makes gnuplot works in windows terminal but in not wxt terminal.

Hi, I'm receiving a warning due to the fonts I'm trying to use, please help
me!

I am using Octave 3.01 which uses GNUPlot 4.2. I am trying to display graphs
and save them to a file. I originally just used the name of the font I
wished to use, but several times GNUPlot would be unable to find the font I
had specified. After that I tried setting the font path as per
documentation, but that too does not seem to fix the problem. Finally I used
Octave to set my default font as specifically as possible, giving it the
address from C: to the windows directory, and then specifically naming the
font in full, including extension. Where previously, lines of data would not
be saved in the plot image I was creating, now all the text shows up.

But, I am receiving this warning while plotting, and would like to avoid it:

"(pgnuplot.exe:3960): Pango-WARNING **: couldn't load font
"C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\COUR
BD.ttf Not-Rotated 200", falling back to "Sans Not-Rotated 200", expect ugly
out
put."

It seems to me that the specific problem has to do with the "Not-Rotated
200" bit since that is not an actual font name on the windows system.

Does anyone have any idea of how I could fix this problem? Is there a
specific font that will work? Can I specify the font name differently?

I know warnings aren't errors, but the people I work with treat them as if
they are. Please advise!

That appearance is deceiving.  They're nothing of the sort.

Summing it up: the only relation between CAD and gnuplot is that both 
deal with vector graphics.

Hi All,

I did find something else that was part of the gnuplot 4.2 download zip 
program. In the main directory their are 2 files named 'wgnuplot.mnu' 
and 'wgnuplot-ja.mnu'.  These appear to be menu files for AutoCAD LT 
where you can run gnuplot from within AutoCAD LT.

I tried loading these files into 'AutoCAD LT for Windows 95' but they 
wouldn't load properly.  Do these programs work and has anyone 
successfully loaded them into AutoCAD LT?

Inquiring minds would like to know.

Because you didn't tell gnuplot where else this output should go.  See 
"help set output".

Hi All,

More dumb questions.  I am unable to plot anything to my potter in 
gnuplot.  I
set the terminal for my plotter ['hpgl 6' for my 7574A plotter] and 
tried one of the demo programs.  All I got was a list of the plotter 
commands on screen.  I even tried the simple "plot sin(x)" as a test 
without success. Is there something else I need to do?

Hi John,
unfortunately I think you're on a wrong track. gnuplot is not a driver, it is 
a function plotter (among many other things). You may create graphs from 
binary or ascii input data - but the data created from AutoCAD are not 
readable from gnuplot AFAIK.

              dxf  dxf-file for AutoCad (default size 120x80)

You may find dxf terminal.  I have no experience to use it so that no further reply cannot be made.

Hi All,

I just found this program gnuplot and this forum.  I have a quick simple 
question.  Can gnuplot be used as a plotter driver to plot files made in 
AutoCAD LT?  In other words can an AutoCAD output file (.PLT, .DXF, .DWG 
) be plotted using gnuplot?

I have tried without success to do this.  However, I haven't tried it 
directly to the plotter.  I used the 'windows' terminal for test purposes.

The reason I ask is, my old plotter, HP7475A, had a driver for win98 but 
none for Winxp.  The only driver program I found costs $260, which is 10 
times more than the plotter's worth.  Looking for a way to use my old 
plotter in WinXP with AutoCAD LT.

you cannot provide the data filename on the commandline because it contains no 
information what to do.
However, you can have a set of scripts (or a sequence of scripts or 
whatever ...)
you call

gnuplot <myscript1>

where 
<myscript1>
is any ascii file containing formatting information and the file you want to 
plot from. Say you want to plot the first column of "mydata.dat" vs. the 
second column of "mydata.dat" you would create a file, say "mydata.plt" that 
contains

*********************
plot "mydata.dat" using 1:2 w l lw 2
*********************

(just for example)

If you are on linux (or unix) you could write

*********************
#!/usr/bin/gnuplot
plot "mydata.dat" using 1:2 w l lw 2
*********************

into mydata.plt, make this file executable (chmod 0755 mydata.plt) and call 
it - the only thing you have to make sure is that the path to gnuplot fits 
your situation.

If it is not possible,
I would like to read from gnuplot the content of a text file where the

Dear listmembers,
I frequently use gnuplot for my graphs in conjunction with the postscript 
terminal. However, there is one thing that drives me nuts someone might have 
an idea on how to help me with.

My prerequisite is the postscript terminal. I haven't tested on other 
terminals and I expect any terminal to exhibit a very similar behaviour, the 
quality of the outcome of the commands that follow now will vary in a wide 
range.

Assume you want to have an axis label and an arrow along the axes, you can do:

set xlabel "t/s"
set ylabel "U/V"

set arrow 1 filled size graph 0.035,8 from graph -0.12,0.55 to \
graph -0.12,0.8
set arrow 2 filled size graph 0.035,8 from graph 0.55,-0.12 to \
graph 0.72,-0.12

The problem arises now that the label and the label text may be in an 
appropriate position relative to each other, but in general they will not. 
This depends on the font you are using, on the axis text format (i. e. 
whether the highest number is 1 or 1000) and so on and so forth.

Therefore one needs to check the positions after each plot and one is forced 
to play with the numbers / give a little more / give a little less - an 
interative procedure.

One possible improvement is to use the following structure:

XPOS=-0.12
YPOS=-0.08

# The next two lines are mandatory. If they do not exist, the graph's limits 
# do not extend across the axis numbering, so there would be no room for an 
# actual label.
set xlabel " " # blank is required!
set ylabel " " # blank is required!

set label 1 "t/s" at graph 0.5,YPOS
set label 2 "U/V" rotate by 90 at graph XPOS,0.5
set arrow 1 filled size graph 0.035,8 from graph -XPOS,0.55 to graph XPOS,0.8
set arrow 2 filled size graph 0.035,8 from graph 0.55,YPOS to graph 0.72,YPOS

This will ensure that text and arrows are in the correct relative position to 
each other (besides a possible x-shift for the x-arrow and a possible y-shift 
for the y-arrow. However, the position relative to the axis needs to be 
rechecked and highly probable needs to be adjusted.

The improvement here is that you only change one number at one place to 
influence all relevant parameters.

Is there any chance to get an information about the y-position of the x-label 
and the x-position of the y-label in order to reduce the effort if one wants 
to put label-arrows along the axis? 

Nicest would be, say (my dream, indeed)

set xlabelarrow filled size graph 0.035,8 {offset {graph} <OFFSET>} length \ 
graph 0.2
set ylabelarrow filled size graph 0.035,8 {offset {graph} <OFFSET>} length \ 
graph 0.2

and the xlabelarrow would start right of the xlabel and would be centered to 
it in y-position and the ylabelarrow would start above of the ylabel and 
would be centered to it in x-position. But this is just a dream, I know.

Nevertheless, maybe someone knows a better approach that could simplify the 
efforts required to get this done. This exceeds far beyond my programming 
capabilities.

Dear Christian,
here's another one - a simple example how I do my graphs. To avoid sending you 
data files I just took a parabola as an example - if you have any open 
questions just let me know.

On top of this you will need the document "ps_guide.pdf" I have attached to 
this email; you can see there how to cope with specific fonts and text 
positioning in the postscript-terminal (comes with gnuplot but hardly anybody 
knows).

_If_ you are on linux I can provide a script that would convert _any_ (not 
only those from gnuplot) postscript file into a postscript document of 
optimum size for TeX (i. e. the boundary is there where the picture ends, the 
figure is not on a letter or A4 paper sheet, but on a sheet of exactly the 
size of your figure). This is very usefull when drawing figures like:

\begin{center}
\begin{figure}[H]
\includegraphics[scale=0.6,angle=30]{dummy.pdf}
\end{figure}
\end{center}

Surprise surprise if dummy.pdf should be on a sheet of paper and you're forced 
to find out how to exactly place and shift it around.

I'm wondering if anyone has encountered anything like this.

I'm using MikTex 2.7 and am script-generating plots using epslatex in
Gnuplot 4.2.3. They're not particularly exciting plots and should be
well-behaved.

I use the plots in LaTeX via the \input{} command - all six of them - but
here's where it gets weird. I can best illustrate with an example (please
ignore the redundancies in the \graphicspath and \input commands)

As a result of the above plots, we can see that I am tremendously handsome.

What happens is that all sorts of spaces will get shoved between the
"looking." and "As". In other words, the plots will appear where ever
LaTeX wants to put them, no surprise, but then the text will look like:

... why I am so good looking.        As a result....

It's really weird. Has anyone seen this sort of thing before? What am I
doing wrong? Any insight would be profoundly appreciated. I've posted this
question here because I'm somehow suspicious that it might have to do with
the epslatex terminal, but if not, I'll drag myself elsewhere.

you have two points fixed (the end points) and one free point,
so you may fit one parameter only.

the function could be
f(x)=(x/100.)**a *100.
but you need to set 'a' to a reasonable value if the fit
doesn't converge directly.
