is there any way to read the initialization value for variables from a csv
or dat file, for example something like
var = fread('myfile.csv',3,2)
meaning read the third row, second column of myfile.csv and assign it to
var.

[Gnuplot-info] pm3d - I am lost

Hi, Gnuplotians, 

I try to use pm3d optionbut I run into the following message:

Warning: Single isoline (scan) is not enough for a pm3d plot.
           Hint: Missing blank lines in the data file? See 'help pm3d' and
FAQ.

What does this mean? On the plot I cannot see anything, only the axes and
colormap.

My datafile strcutre is the following:

x1 <tab> y1 <tab> z1 <tab> w1
x2 <tab> y2 <tab> z2 <tab> w2

.   <tab> .   <tab> .   <tab> .

xn <tab> yn <tab> zn <tab> wn

First column is size, 2nd is time 3rd is value 4th is std.dev.

My script is as follows:
...
set pm3d map implicit
set surface
splot "bigyusz.dat" u 1:2:3 
...

[Gnuplot-info] replot a multiplot

Hello,

i am using gnuplot's multiplot facility to plot two rather big plots. as
they are big, i like to use the zoom/replot/autoscale features of the wxt -
terminal. i prefer the wxt - terminal, because i cannot make eps's large
enough to zoom as far as i need.
however, when wxt replots the graph it only replots the /last/ plot command,
whereas i would need it to repeat /all/ plot commands, issued inside the
multiplot-env. (with the x11 - term replotting seems to work - but it has no
zoom-feature, right?)

is this possible?

Well, according to 'help startup', you should have put it into 
%USERPROFILE%, i.e. "c:\Documents and Settings\[your User name]\".  But 
the documentation appears to be dragging a little behind things.  It's 
actually in %APPDATA%.  I just tried that with 4.2.3, and it worked.

Oh, and since you appear to be hailing from Germany, please note that 
the name of %APPDATA% would be "c:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\[your 
User name]\Anwendungsdaten" here.

You just found out what the wgnuplot_pipes.exe version of the program is

[Gnuplot-info] variable colors possible with plot with vectors?

Hi everyone,

For plotting wind direction above my plots I use something like: 

plot ....
  '20080416_wind.gpd' axes x2y2 with vectors lt -1 title 'Wind @60m'

which gives me nice black arrows. Now I want to extend this trying to show
the wind speed also by means of coloring the arrows (from white to black for
example). I experimented with 3dpm and by introducing something like:
linecolor variable and using an extra column but no luck.

Can somebody tell whether it is possible or not, and if so, give the magic
line. (I'm using 4.2)

[Gnuplot-info] splot: doing a 3d plt with a 2d background using 2 independant palettes....

Hey there,
I would like to use pm3d in map view "with points palette", in order to
color points that are distributed in XY, according to some 2rd value (no
problems with that).
what I would also like to do is to superimpose this colorful splot (in map
view) on some greyscale image (which can be displayed independantly with
gnuplot), in order for the reader to understand where are these XY locations
in the image.
the problem is, that in order to color the datapoints, i am using a color
palette and when i draw the image and then replot the data on top,
everything gets the same palette.....the greyscale image becomes colored
according to its pixel values (i guess) and the data points get the same
color (as their range is much smaller).
to make a long story short:
how do i assign different palettes to 2 datasets on the same chart?

I am using gnuplot 4.2 on Win XP - and I like it!
But now 2 problems have arisen:
1. There is no gnuplot.ini on my system. So I want to create it. In which
folder do I have to place it? I tried 'C:\Docs and
settings\USERNAME\Application data\', but it didn't work. (In this folder I
have found 'gnuplot_history')

2. I want to plot graphs by starting a .plt file directly - without starting
wgnuplot.exe first. When I do so, the plot is displayed. But immediately
after the graph has been plotted, the window is shut down again. How can I
hold the window to watch the graph?

I am using the code under unbuntu to produce a .png plot. However I am
finding that the fonts are not coming out...nor are any labels. How do I do

I can then correctly plot using:

splot 	"GMM_model.txt" matrix using 1:2:3 with lines

But if the plot are correct, I have values 1 2 3 4 5 ... for the x axis and
the y axis. But the matrix is calculated with x in range of [-2;2] and y in
range of [4;8]. So I want to have the correct tics for the matrix. I hope
you understand the problem and sorry for my poor english...

dear all,

I want to use compiled functions for fitting (they involve a numerical
integration and obviously can't be coded in gnuplot), so the help says to use
'f(x) = real(system(sprintf("somecommand %f", x)))'. this gives me the error
message "warning: system evaluation not supported by MS-Windows 32 bit". and
this is no problem of my actual compiled function, because just typing
s=system("bla") gives the same error, but it should store the OS' error message
"command not found" in string s, as I see it? so is this a fundamental problem
in the communication between gnuplot and windows and nothing to be done? I have
the latest stable version 4.2.4, also 4.3 says the same. any suggestions will be
appreciated.

Sorry, but you're not making any sense at all.  You have used the word 
"line" in at least 3 different meanings, without leaving any hint what 
the difference between those is.

I have a binary data (integer) which has only one line and every 1000 line
is another histogram.
Is it possible to tell gnuplot to plot every 1000 line as another line in
histogram. 
In this situation line number should be x value and my data is y value.

a) you are using 'set xdata time'. so the origin of the
    coordinate system is ("01/01/2000" , 0).
    that means that the point where 'c' is calculated (point of
    origin) is far off the point where your data are:
    appr. +2.8e+8 seconds.
    this can not work.

    for the function
    f(x)=m*(x-2.8e+08) + c
    the fit behaves a little bit better when setting 'c' to a value
    near enough to 293255.

    but in the end it will terminate with the message
    Singular matrix in Invert_RtR

    maybe it's because the fit is working at the limit of
    computational accuracy? i'm not sure about that...

b) for data distributed on a horizontal line you should
    use an appropriate function, e.g.
    f(x)=a
    and the fit will converge after 4 steps.

Sorry, but for technical reasons 'fit' fails at finding zeroes as target 
parameters.  The problem is with the way we compute derivatives WRT 
parameters.

Moreover, even if that did work, it also doesn't work well to have fit 
parameters with wildly different orders of magnitude.  Zero is 
infinitely different from all other numbers in that respect... :-(

So you'll have to shift the m parameter away from zero.  Something like:

	f(x) = (m-2e5)*x + c
