I think writeback or restore option in xrange cannot help to solve my
problem.

For example,

set xrange[0:1100] (with any option)
p 'temp.dat' u 1:2 w lp #last snapshot
# to draw 1st snapshot, i use
p[0:100] 'temp.dat' u 1:2 w lp
# then the range of x immediately change to 0-100 not fixed range of 0-1100.
I can't do that by using xrange option.

In the help,
They used funtion such as sin(x) and x/2 not a data. Here is a point.
>From one data, I should draw part of one graph under fixed xrange.
To do so, I have to use p[0:100], p[100:200], and so on. Then I can't fix
the xrange.

[Gnuplot-info] Making an animated graph

Dear all,

I would like to make an animated graph by collecting snapshots.
Let's consider following 2 column data named as temp.dat:

Step Temp
0       122
100     102
200     112
300     122
400     153
500     143
600     111
700     132
800     142
900     152
1000    102
1100    112
What I want to do is
1) obtain 12 snapshots in which the 1st snapshot file has just one point,
(0,122) and the 2nd snapthot have two points including former (0,122) and
next (100,102) with lines, and the followings have same rule. So the final
snapshot file is same one as what plotted using "p[0:1100] temp.dat u 1:2 w
lp".

However, my problem is that I can't fix the x range to [0:1100] when making
1st through 11st snapshots. All snapshots should be same x or y range to
give an animated effect, but I can't draw a point with fixed range. Does
anybody know how to handle it?

Throw away the data point at x=0 (and all other exact multiples of \pi, 
of course) before you pass the data to the 'fit' command.

[Gnuplot-info] Problem with singularity <-> Divide by zero

I should start with this: Sorry for my maybe not so good english :)

And now to my problem:
I have data concerning rutherford-scattering. In order to verify the formula
I need to make a fit with the function f(x)=a*1/(sin(x/2)**4). Like you can
see I get for x=0 a little mathematical problem. The following picture shows
the fit in green and how I would like it to be in blue. Is there any
possibility of telling GnuPlot to skip x=0 and interpolate?

Hi,

how can I get y2tics and labels when y1 and y2 are related, eg. y2=0.2*y1?

Imagine y1 0%-100% and y2 0-1, or a y1 being in meters/s and y2 being in km/h.

I tried:

set ytics nomirror
set y2tics
plot "foo.dat", "" u 1:(0.2*$2) axes x1y2 notitle

but I think plotting the same thing twice is overkill.

in gnuplot version 4.4-rc1 the lines are drawn together
with the key labels.
version 4.2.6 doesn't draw the lines.

There are, of course other ways of doing this in earlier gnuplots,
depending on the terminal chosen.  PNG, for example has a syntax that
allows background, foreground, and other colors to be specified. I have
found that black-background graphs are especially stunning visually and
have converted all my graphs to work that way.  I suppose this might not
work so well for printing.

No that was not what I meant. If I don't use 'notitle' in the second plot,
a title for the data in line.dat is added, but I need a key which
indicates which contourline, generated in the first plot, corresponds to
which value.

I have created several images which hopefully will clarify the situation
(I apologize for the size of these images).

The first image is basically what I want, except I have not added a plot
for y=2-x yet, it is the situation I started out with:

The second image is what I got after your suggestion to use the first plot
"with pm3d" and to use "set surface". It is almost what I want but, as you
can see, in the key the lines behind the values 50,60,70 and 80 are
missing:

The third image is what I get after your suggestion to remove "notitle"
from the second plot, as you can see, the lines are still missing from the

Heh, I'm a relative newbie myself and I thought my concatenation was
weak, but I didn't see an explicit concat() function, but I decided to
send it anyway and so you've gone me one better and taught me something.
 In my similar example I was able to take a substring of the date as a
whole without needing to concatenate the pieces.  If your source is a
database query you might consider rewriting it if you can to avoid such
ugliness.

another trick for the x labels is

set xtics nomirror out rotate by -45

which outputs the labels diagonally so you can squeeze more in.  Don't
know if that would work for you.

Thank you, Steve. I was in the process of researching how to get the
labels I need when your note dramatically shortened my effort. But I did
need to change your suggestion slightly.

1. Your parentheses weren't balanced (easy to fix).
2. \\n doesn't work in that place. I had to change it to '."\n".'. That
is, put it in quotes and use string concatenation. I could also have
used sprintf but that takes more characters to type.
3. I had to add "bmargin 3" so the second line of label would actually
appear.

I'm producing a series of different plots in eps format, which have the same
aspect ratio but different values for the y-axis tic labels. Here is a
snapshot
of 2 of them once included in a Latex file with the same scaling :

I've tried adjusting the lmargin, but it seems to me there's a further scale
change when the eps is produced, such that the width of the actual eps plot

How's it possible to override this scale change when producing the eps? Or
is there
some other setting that would force an arbitrary measure of the width of the
plot ?
(similar to Latex' vphantom)

[Gnuplot-info] Magnification of a series of EPS plots

Hello

I'm producing a series of different plots in eps format, which have the same
aspect ratio but different values for the y-axis tic labels. Here is a
snapshot 
of 2 of them once included in a Latex file with the same scaling :

 I'd like to have them all with the same size, that is, that the plot itself
has the same
size, regardless of the width of the tic labels. 

I've tried adjusting the lmargin, but it seems to me there's a further scale 
change when the eps is produced, such that the width of the actual eps plot
incl labels fits in the page.

How's it possible to override this scale change when producing the eps? Or
is there 
some other setting that would force an arbitrary measure of the width of the
plot ? 
(similar to Latex' vphantom)

this thread was the old thread. I am sorry for very lately response. I tried
your suggestion, but my problem is I wrote gnu plot command in bash, so the
mark of $ causes the error . For clearness, below is my script. I wrote my
script in bash because I must run the same script for many years.

Of course you do.  You already have too _few_ using specifiers to work 
with 'set xdata time'.  Removing more obviously won't help with that.

As I said, histogramming and date/time input don't make sense together. 
  Drop the 'set xdata time' entirely and you should get a plot.

My code says,
 plot "/tmp/file" using 2:xtic(1), "/tmp/file" using ($3+$4+$5+$6+$7) axis x1y2
I've tried it without the :xtic(1) and still get the error. The help screen for "set style histogram" says, "Each element of the `plot` command must specify a single input data source (e.g. one column of the input  file), possibly with associated tic values or key titles", so I have trouble understanding what additional using specifier I could add.

The data file looks like this:
2009-01 1 1 0 0 0 0
2009-02 1 1 0 0 0 0
2009-03 3 9 0 0 0 0
2009-04 6 6 0 0 3 4
2009-05 11 14 3 3 0 4
2009-06 10 2 18 7 4 5

I supposed I could drop the year and plot against the month -- for now. But this won't work once the file contains two more lines, as it will in little more than a month.

Can you suggest the actual commands needed?
