[Gnuplot-info] Histograms with dates on the X axis

Using the latest release 4.4.0-rc1:

set boxwidth 0.8 relative
set xdata time
set timefmt "%Y-%m"
set format x "%m\\n%Y"
set ylabel "label1"
set y2label "label2"
set ytics nomirror
set y2tics nomirror
set key off
set style fill solid 1.0
set boxwidth 0.9 relative
set style histogram clustered
set style data histograms
set style fill solid 1.0 border -1
plot "/tmp/file" using 2:xtic(1), "/tmp/file" using ($3+$4+$5+$6+$7)
axis x1y2
                                ^
         Need full using spec for x time data

(I understand that some of the settings may not be optimal. For example,
the boxwidth. I would expect to tune these once I see some output.)

A little searching hints that this message may be somewhat misleading.
That what it really means is that a "format" must be added. But perhaps
that hint is wrong? I've tried adding '%lf', '%lf-%lf', and '%lf-%lf
%lf' but the error persists.

Can anyone tell me the right way to generate this plot?

Hello

I'm producing a series of different plots in eps format, which have the same
aspect ratio but different values for the y-axis tic labels. I'd like to
have them all with the same size, that is, that the plot itself has the same
size, regardless of the width of the tic labels. 

I've tried adjusting the lmargin, but it seems to me there's a further scale 
change when the eps is produced, such that the width of the actual eps plot
incl labels fits in the page.

How's it possible to override this scale change?

don't use 'notitle' in the 2nd plot

Thanks for your answer, this indeed seems to do the trick. However now the
key (which should show what contourline has which value) only shows
values, not the lines they correspond to, which makes it pretty useless
I'm afraid. I didn't include the key in the plot in my previous E-mail
because I thought it wouldn't be relevant but it seems to be.

To be more exact, I now use the following plotfile:

set terminal postscript eps enhanced monochrome
set output "output.eps"
set title "2009-11-24" offset 0,0.5
set size square
set xrange [1.01:1.2]
set yrange [0.85:0.99]
set xlabel "A"
set ylabel "B"

Hello,
I am doing a 3D plot where I have to plot some points colored by their
z-value.

unset key
set palette
splot 'file1.txt' using 1:2:3 with points palette pointtype 7 pointsize 0.75

But I also want to plot a vector on each point with the same color as the
previous plotted point. So I use

splot 'file1.txt' using 1:2:3 with points palette pointtype 7 pointsize
0.75, 'vecs.txt' using 1:2:3:4:5:6:(3) with vectors linetype palette

but I get the color of the vectors from the sixth coordinate in the
'vecs.txt' file which is always zero in my case and I end up with all black
vectors.
I know that I could do

See, since autoranging is done after all functions/data are evaluated, why
not exclude the special case *,u 3:(?)(?),*  from evaluating the GPVAL
parameters, which I don't think is a problem to realize, then the system
automaticall assign the GPVAL_Y_MIN+0.5*(GPVAL_Y_MAX-GPVAL_Y_MIN) and
0.5*(GPVAL_Y_MAX-GPVAL_Y_MIN) to the two question marks, and then return
back to the normal path

sure, the plot ranges are determined and are accessible via some
variables, e.g. GPVAL_Y_MIN, GPVAL_Y_MAX, a.s.o.

but, these variables are set after all functions/data are evaluated,
not before.

otherwise it would be easy:

plot "datafilename" using 1:2, \
"" using 3:\
(GPVAL_Y_MIN+0.5*(GPVAL_Y_MAX-GPVAL_Y_MIN)):\
(0.5*(GPVAL_Y_MAX-GPVAL_Y_MIN))

but this doesn't work, because at the time these variable are
used here, they are unset - because autoranging is done after
all functions/data are evaluated

you could do a dummy plot (set term dumb), where you plot
everything except the vertical lines. this would set the axis ranges.
and then you would do the real plot, this time with the (errorbars
as) vertical lines:

set term push
set term dumb
plot "datafilename" using 1:2
set term pop
plot "datafilename" using 1:2, \
"" using 3:\
(GPVAL_Y_MIN+0.5*(GPVAL_Y_MAX-GPVAL_Y_MIN)):\

tics are drawn either in or out.
but you may use the 2nd axes to get in/out tics:

gnuplot> set xtics mirror out
gnuplot> set ytics mirror out
gnuplot> set x2tics mirror in format ""
gnuplot> set y2tics mirror in format ""
gnuplot> plot sin(x)

where is the warning
   warning: Skipping data file with no valid points
going, that gnuplot prints to stderr?
does it cause the http-server or the cgi-script not to
accept the plot?

I have a dynamic script, fired by cgi that prints a graph.  Data is
dynamically supplied by the script in two plots.  It is possible that
either or both of the two plots might contain no data.  I just realized
that when one of the two plots is empty no graph was being emitted at
all, even though the other plot had data.

The plot command I used was:
plot "-" u 1:2 ti "Weekday" w impulses, "-" u 1:2 ti "Weekend" w impulses
<a bunch of data>
e
e

I expected to see the Weekday series and not the Weekend, but instead
saw nothing.


It was easy enough to fix this in the script with if logic, but
arguably, shouldn't I expect gnuplot to plot something if I give it
something even if one of the series is blank?
