OK, I feel like an idiot but I guess I'm really not understanding you
even after reading the document you referred me to. The specific words
I'm not understanding are "going separate ways".
To that end I've gone back to basics and rewritten the example on p. 241
in python. I believe my translation is more or less exact:

Here's the error:
[error] [client ::1] malformed header from script. Bad header=\x89PNG:
usage_graph.cgi
I don't understand this. How could closing the gnuplot process create a
malformed header yet leaving it open produces usable output? Still, I
guess that's a clue. I just don't know what it means.

Am trying to use gnuplot as a subprocess to a CGI script written in python (similar to the perl script on p. 241 of "Gnuplot in Action"). The python script itself follows the pattern of the python script on p.230-231, that is gp = os.popen( ' /usr/bin/gnuplot', 'w') ... plotting commands gp.close() The cgi script produces a 500 error. But, if I comment out the gp.close() command, it works perfectly, and produces the graph I want. What is going on here? |

Follow the instruction suggested by Thomas. Once you have the untar the .gz file. Hello all, I am trying to find a way to color the surfaces between contourlines. I have already plotted the contourlines (see http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/40/exampleq.png), but cannot find a way to color the surfaces between them. For instance, if you look at the example picture, the areas which are bordered by the lightblue lines should have one color, those by the purple another, etc. For reference, I created the contour lines as follows: set pm3d map set nosurface set cntrparam bspline set contour set xrange [1:3.64] set yrange [0.09:0.96] unset colorbox unset key splot "results.dat" using ($5):($6):($1) notitle The results.dat file is basically build up like this (colom 5 and 6 are X and Y, 1 is Z): 85.45 1 1.2904819 0.7095181 1.01 0.1 85.68 1 1.2904819 0.7095181 1.01 0.17782794 *snip* 86.61 1 1.2904819 0.7095181 1.0150374 0.1 85.06 1 1.2904819 0.7095181 1.0150374 0.17782794 *snip* etc. Is this in any way possible, or should I just post-process the image in a program like GIMP? The problem comes from your apparent aversion to usual notation for big
numbers, i.e. from spelling out 1*10**12 when you should have just
written 1e12. The problem is that 10**12, as writtten, is an operation
on integers, so it'll be evaluated in integers. But 10**12 is quite
certainly larger than all integers on your machine, so this doesn't do
anywhere near what you think it should:
gnuplot> print 10**12
-727379968
gnuplot> print 1.0*10**12
-727379968.0
gnuplot> print 1*10.0**12
1000000000000.0
