Dear all,

first of all thank you so much for the help on my last question.
I am now doing a mathematics modeling portfolio, and I need to plot a
function.

Question 1
I have the following code written in a textfile


set grid
set ylabel "Amount"
set xlabel "Hours"
q=1.124
b=50000
a=1000000
f(x)=(q**x*a)-b*((1-q**x)/(1-q))
g(x)=1*10**12
plot [0:200] [1.0*10**6:1.5*10**12] f(x), g(x)

However, whenever I try to plot the function f(x), I cannot see it in the
graphing window.
I tried decreasing the values for constants b and a to 50 and 1000
respectively, and then the graph *does *appear, but when I increase the
values
there is no graph. What is the obvious mistake that I'm making? The scale
should be fine at least according to preliminary graphs on a graphing
calculator.


Question 2

When I plot big values in gnuplot, the y-axis labels are first written as
8000000, 9000000 and then the label changes to "calculator notation"
with the "e". I want the labels to be for example 8.0*10^6. I tried changing
the notation by using the command
set format y "10^{%L} , but then the labels become just 10^8, 10^9 and so
forth. Is there a possibility that I could change this?

[Gnuplot-info] Problem with gnuplot/Aquaterm on MacOs Snow Leopard

Hello everyone,
I recently installed gnuplot version 4.2 on my Mac (OS is 10.6.1, Snow  
Leopard), using MacPorts.
It works, but only on Terminals different from 'aqua'. When 'aqua' is  
set and I want to plot something, say:
gnuplot> plot sin(x)
Aquaterm is called, but no window (and then no graphic) is shown... It  
remains there, like if it'd try to compute, but really doing  
nothing... If I close Aquaterm it says:
AquaTerm warning: Connection to display was lost,
plot commands will be discarded until a new plot is started.
gnuplot>

What's wrong?

Obligatory reminder: the program's name is "gnuplot".  No upper-case 
letter anywhere.

type in the terminal: 

sudo apt-get gnuplot 

enter the password and this will install GNUPLOT. Most likely you should get
the latest one.

[Gnuplot-info] Getting more plots on one!

I am not sure how to describe this but I would like to create plots that look
like those in the attached figure. How do you create these? Please note that
this is just on plot with many subplots. 

I know the basics of GNUPLOT but I am not sure how to put the plots together
as shown in the attached figure. So please just tell me how to stack them
one top of the other.

could you describe how your data look like and what you are
trying to achieve?
are the time ranges of the two data sets overlapping or are they
far apart?
why do you use 'multiplot'?

[Gnuplot-info] basic conditional plotting

Hi all, 

I am stuggling a bit with a conditional plotting and would appreciate a
little help...
My datafile is as follow (only the 2 first line here): 

0.01,0,0.5153,0.2015
0.01,1,-0.2869,0.3255
....
....

My objective is to plot the 3rd variable against the 1st one only if the 2nd
variable is equal to 1.

I've got so far the basic plot function:
gnuplot>plot "/myfile_path/myfile.csv" using 1:3

Does anybody know how I could solve my problem quickly?

- install a c-compiler on your system (if it isn't already there)
- get the gnuplot source (see http://www.gnuplot.info/download.html)
- unpack it (tar -xvf gnuplot-4.2.6.tar.gz)
- 'cd' into the source directory (cd gnuplot-4.2.6)
- read INSTALL and follow the instructions therein

set arrow 1 from xstart,ystart to xstart+dx,ystart+dy
set label 1 "5cm" at xstart+0.5*dx,ystart+0.5*dy

choose xstart,ystart to place the arrow at an appropriate place
and dx and dy to give the arrow length the required length.

plot [xmin:xmax] [ymin:ymax] ...

[xmin:xmax] is the x-range to be plotted
[ymin:ymax] is the y-range to be plotted, so [15:15] doesn't make any sense

Hello Gnuplot-Gurus,

I generating graphs using the epslatex terminal. I have to use german umlaute in the labels and legend.

I managed to get umlaute working when I put them into the plot file: '\\\"a' in the plot file will give me a '\"a' in the tex file and an 'ä' in the document.

Now however I need to use umlaute in the data file as well. I'm using "t col" in my plot command to extract the key for the graph from the data file. In the datafile I'm using labels with spaces, so I enclosed them with "".

Example:

I want in the .tex: Paket verz\"ogert
I put in the data: "Paket verz\\\"ogert"
I get in the .tex: Paket verz\

How can I properly escape the " in the data file?

I do not have enough knowledge of autotools on unixy system.
However, I have been building cvs version of gnuplot on cygwin.

At the cygwin prompt.
$ automake --version
automake (GNU automake) 1.11
Copyright (C) 2009 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
License GPLv2+: GNU GPL version 2 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html>

I have never met troubles when I execute the './prepare' script that uses autotools.

Perhaps problem lies on different place.

as my demand of real work with newer gnuplot features comes closer,  
and time didnt resolve the issue, I tried compiling gnuplot 4.3 from  
CVS. The gnuplot website provides a script which is supposed to do  
the job:

I tried this script on a Tiger 10.4.11 PPC with macports 1.8.1  
installed, and get the following output messages:

There comes the line
"You need automake newer 1.8 (fink helps)!!"

AFAIK macports does only provide automake 1.11 and 1.7 - do I have to  
bother?

I'd be very grateful if somebody could have a brief look and give me  
some hints for troubleshooting.

Up to the point, everything is ok...

My issue is to have a scaled sample for the vector field key...

e.g. : I want to display a sample with for example "5 cm" displayed next to it, and the displayed length match a "5 cm" vector on the map... (not on the screen of course)

What would be the better way to do that ?

and then
'set table'
the table goes to the file,
'unset table'
'plot something....'
and then the graphics-output is appended.
that's why your graphic files are corrupt: they have
the human readable data table in front.

you should:
'set term'
'set table'
# do the dummy plot
'unset table'
'set output some_filename.jpg'
'plot ...'
'set output'

if you want a larger plot don't 'set size 1.5,1.5' instead
'set terminal latex size 7.5in,4.5in'
(works for gnuplot version >= 4.2.2)

Actually, to answer your original question, I'm finding that the .gif, 
.jpeg, and .png files generated by the test command in the various 
terminal modes do produce readable files, the but the files produced by 
the plot command are often (but not always) unreadable.

Additional results.
I have now been able to compile a version of gnuplot 4.5 on RHEL 5.3 
with the approprate libgd support. However results are unreliable. 
Sometimes viable GIF and JPEG files are created, other times the files 
created are rejected by viewer apps. Since these results are seen on two 
different platforms, I wonder if it is a bug in 4.5?

I have problem scaling plots generated by GNUPlot for LaTeX.

All later mentioned files are attached.

for running the program, only the shared libraries are needed,
for compiling the header files are needed too.
(normally in the "lib...-dev" package)
