Very instructive!

I would like to know more about using "+" as special filename, so I run help
plot and then choosing datafile for details, but I can only find explanation
for another special filename "-" but not "+", where can I get indepth
explanation for it?

This is actually a long-lasting question I had with gnuplot help. Gnuplot
uses very common words as command, which is easier for us to remember, but
also makes it much harder to get help through search engines like google.
Usually I have to spend time going through the help manual in details to get
what I needed.

[Gnuplot-info] command line variables into script?

Hi all,

I have the following gnuplot script which takes data from a file with a single column and produces a histogram.  I will have to run this script lots of times, on different results files.  Is there a way to change 'res.dat' and 'res.eps' to command line variables so that I don't have to edit the script each time I run it on a different results file?

use 'columnstring(0)'
note: numbering of read in data lines starts with 0
(have a look at 'pseudocolumns' in the manual)

contains the characters forming the commands to create all the variables,
then run the string as a macro.

A bit further question, what if the data file does not have the first
column, say bbb.txt

0.56
0.45
0.56
0.65

and I still want to read these variables into an array

v1 = 0.56
v2 = 0.45
v3 = 0.56
v4 = 0.65

if still follow your logic, I don't have a columnstring(?) to give 1,2,3,4
..., then what should I do?

Dear list,

until now I used gnuplot together with inkscape and psfrag to produce
plots for publications. Now I have switched to inkscape 0.47 together
with gnuplot 4.4 (on ubuntu). Inkscape changed the eps export to cairo
and now my favourite toolchain is no longer.

I tried terminal postscript eps together with the psfrag package without
success, I tried terminal epslatex and found it to be to complicated.

What do I need:
x/y label in latex font, \"symbol" and lines with different colours and
different styles (B/W printer compatibility).

Please tell me how you achieve that. Thank you very much in advance!

I'm having some problems plotting a matrix using pm3d, I have a simple
file with the following lines

0 1
1 0

But when I plot it I only get an image that ranges from 0 to 1 in x
and y axis, I've included a sample of the output. I would like to get
an output that ranges from 0 to 2 in both axes and with 2 black and
two yellow/white blocks (representing the input matrix). The code used
to generate the image is the following:

set terminal svg
set output "coeffs.svg"
set autoscale
set title "Non null coefficients in DCT matrix"
set pm3d map
set size square
set palette rgbformulae 30,31,32
splot "./data.dat" matrix title ""

[Gnuplot-info] Problem with rangelimited on 3D-plots

Hi all,

I am using Gnuplot 4.4 on Gentoo Linux, and I want to do the following:
Plot a function in 3D, but only plot the z-axis, in those ranges, where
there the function takes values.  This works perfectly in 2D (see the
example in 'help rangelimited'), but it fails to work in 3D.

Example:
 set parametric
 set ztics rangelimited
 set trange [0:2]
 set xrange [0:2]
 set yrange [0:4]
 set zrange [0:10]
 splot [t=0.1:1.9] t,t*t,t*t*t

There seems to be some effect: Only the tics in the range of the
function are shown.  But the axis is still there, in contrast to the
two-dimensional case.

Is there an easy solution?

I might be able to help. I am running Gnuplot 4.4.2 on Mac OSX 10.6.6, but not the MacPorts version. I had to get rid of the MacPorts Gnuplot and AquaTerm to compile Gnuplot 4.4.2 (in /usr/local/bin). My son, who works for Apple, sent me a 64-bit AquaTerm package, which I'd be happy pass on.

I don't have any problems with "pgncairo". I just produced "transparent.2.png" from the "transparent.2.gnu" script. In fact the pgncairo terminal produces a "test" png with
transparent filled polygons.

I compiled Gnuplot 4.4.2 following the instructions at <http://tinyurl.com/4qvc4el>, but AquaTerm wasn't available to Gnuplot until got rid of the MacPorts version of AquaTerm, installed the 64-bit version, and recompiled Gnuplot 4.4.2.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions.

I already tried the encoding trick and it did not work out. Changing postscript instead of eps gives the same odd character substitutions (e.g., for spaces and commas).

As you suggested I have also tried to generate pdf with gs. I get the following log, which I do not really understand:

Why is it trying to load SymL fonts ?

Another possibility could be that the AMS font transformation pfb to pfa does not work properly (gnuplot does it automatically) but I don't know how I could figure that out.

just guessing in the dark ... have you tried to fiddle around with the command 

set encoding XXX

in gnuplot where encoding is something like utf8, iso8859 ...

I am not sure about that - only an idea.

Have you tried to create postscript rather than eps? Does this yield the same 
results?

The next step would be to create the pdf "by hand" for testing:

gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=myfile.pdf myfile.ps

(replace "myfile" accordingly ...)

This command should print out messages about what is happening - I.e. if a 
font would not be found, this ought to be signaled.

Hi,

I am using Euler AMS fonts with a postscript terminal and I generate an .eps with it. (I am using the euler pfb fonts from AMS website: http://www.ams.org/publications/authors/tex/amsfonts)

for instance I create a file example.plot

set term postscript fontfile 'eurm10.pfb'
set term postscript eps color enhanced 'EURM10' 12
set output 'result.eps'
plot sin(x) title 'This is a sinus function'

then I create the eps file with gnuplot (version 4.4 from macports)
gnuplot example.plot

This works fine and the font seems correctly loaded, except that some character replacement occurs when I transform the .eps into a pdf. All the spaces are replaced with a greek letter (a psy). Did anyone already came across this issues.

I have tried several solutions to create the pdf on my Mac (Snow Leopard):
open -a preview result.eps
and
eps2pdf result.eps

But both output the same odd characters.

I have tried to display the eps with ghostview and got the same problem.

Is it due to a wrong font loading into the eps file ? Or is it a postscript to pdf transformation issue ?
I cannot see any other way to load a specific font into the pdf than first creating an eps with the postscript terminal, but maybe I am wrong.

Hello Gnuplotters!

I have some basic experience with GnuPlot, working on Windows with v4.4.

So far, there's gridded 3D data in a binary file (format: x=short,y=short,z=float32). The data basically looks smth like this:
-100 -100 1.42
-100 -99  2.32
-100 -98  14.22
...
-100 99   2.32
-99 -100  2.58
...

(a 200x200 matrix)

By using a multiplier for x and y when gridding, I am able to scale my graph to any size I like. The gnuplot script is the following:

set size ratio 1
set xrange [-1.52333:1.543333]
set yrange [-1.52333:1.543333]
set zrange [0..200]
set palette rgbformulae 22,13,-21
plot 'datafile.bin' binary format="%short%short%float32" u ($1*0.1):($2*0.1):3 palette w image
pause -1


Is it possible to plot the heatmap without explicit x/y coordinates in binary data file? I'd like to have gnuplot create x/y implicitly from matrix indices. So first value in data file is x,y = (0,0) and second value is (0,1) and so on.
Is it faster to precompute the scaling on z values in a program which creates the binary data file than computing it in Gnuplot? Gnuplot seems to be very slow on my system (Core Duo, E7400, 4 Gig RAM).

Dear All,

I just asked something about mathematical operation, and Thomas gave me very
useful hint. So let me ask something more advanced in my point of view. Is
it possible to define an array in gnuplot, and read each row of a file into
the array, for example,

1  0.56
2  0.45
3  0.56
4  0.65

?

p 'aaa.txt' u ( 'v'.$1=$1, 'w'.$1=$1 ):2

and it seems that

v1=1, w1=0.56
v2=2, w2=0.45
...

But if I run the code, it fails, complaining that ')' expected

Thanks! The code was run on a machine with gnuplot versioned v4.2. With your
hint, I checked it on another machine with the newest gnuplot, and it works!

by the way, why don't you just divide your x-data by 10?

set xrange [0:3]

plot   "test.txt" u ($2/10.):1 w l ls 1, ...
