[Gnuplot-info] Transparency and pngcairo issue - help

hi all - I am using v 4.4 of gnuplot on a Mac (10.6.6) and would like to replicate the transparent graphs are seen in the most recent demo (http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo/transparent.html) which use the terminal type "pngcairo" 
I am unable to find the dependency libraries via ports as they appear in the documentation - and I have attempted to install "cairo" related libraries, but still get the error message: 
 set terminal pngcairo  enhanced font "arial,10" size 420, 300 
                      ^ 
         "gnuplot.gnu", line 2: unknown or ambiguous terminal type; 
type just 'set terminal' for a list 

Can someone please help? I want to enjoy the transparency stuff!
