At the moment: You have to enter the network name yourself. We don't currently have support for scanning network names. This is something that is being worked on, but not yet ready. -Rob On Thursday, August 1, 2002, at 10:55 PM, Kirk van Druten wrote: > Sorry if this has been covered before... > > Am I missing something? The OS X "Modem Utility" thing isn't working for me (not doing anything at all). The base station was set up with another machine with a normal AirPort card and all that kind of thing is fine. I followed the directions to use ethernet, DHCP, set an IP, etc, but it simply won't connect to the base station. WEP is off. Any ideas? |

If there are two (or more) wireless networks, how does one go about choosing which one to connect to? Also, has anyone had any luck using WirelessDriver (with an Orinoco Silver card) with MacStumbler (or any other wireless network monitoring utility)? Hello, Thank you very much for your work and offer of your software free of charge. It addresses one of the two major issues I have with OS X. However, I am having a problem getting it to work. Any help you can provide would be helpful. Thank You Paul Stasinos I am running on a powerbook G3 333 Machine ID 406. running os x 10.1 (5G64). 192 mb ram built in, 512K backside l2 cache I am using a skyline wirless card 802.11b a linksys wireless router. it works fine in os 9. it shows a full signal strength signal in os x but can't connect, it lists the broadcast address as 169.254.255.255 an i p address of 169.254.30.197 with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 with ethernet and or os 9 wireless it has a broadcast address of 192.168.1.255 a ip address of 192.168.1.101 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, which works. I use it under Jaguar, as do a few others I know. It does require some small modifications beyond the default install that will be released in an updated installer before Jaguar becomes a public release. If you have legitimate access to Jaguar as a developer already, odds are you could figure out what needs to be done easy enough. -Rob On Sunday, July 28, 2002, at 01:20 PM, Robert Hammen wrote: > Hi folks, > > Has anyone tested the wireless driver on the later builds of > Jaguar (10.2) to see how well it functions? The way you describe it, it sounds like the problem is with the camera. Does the camera/compact flash work if the wireless card has not=20 been inserted since the last reboot? If not, it's likely an=20 issue with that device. If it does, then I've got some issue=20 somewhere in how we're handling PCCard support. Hey people, Just sitting around my SOHO on Sunday afternoon, screwing around with the wireless driver, trying to find a workaround, and guess what? I got it. Here's my set-up: G3 PowerBook (Wallstreet) 233 mhz Lucent Wavelan Silver PC card Xrouter Aero Lexmark Optra RN+ I found the IP address of the printer on my Xrouter Aero, manually started the IP protocol on the printer (rather than Appletalk, though Appletalk is active on the Powerbook), manually entered the IP address, Subnet mask, and router/gateway address on the printer. Then I opened a document, hit Print, edit printer list, add printer, switched to LPR Printers using IP, entered the Lexmark's IP address, and hey, presto! I was having the same problem before with printing via Appletalk, which was how I printed in OS9.x and is, in fact, how I print with my G4 tower to the Lexmark right now. Don't know if this is obvious, or whether it will help anyone reclaim the wireless printing abilities they had under OS 9.x, but I'm happy about it! I have a Skyline 802.11b PC Card I have no problem getting wireless access when running OS 9 but I cannot even config the network card in OS X. I do not get the en1 or en2 option. One thing I did realize is that I have a copy of WirelessDriver PPane.prefPane in the Library folder which I cannot trash because of a privilege issue. I also have the WirelessDriver.kext and WirelessConfig in the Preference Pane folder which I cannot delete. I have logged in as the administrator and that doesn't seem to help my privilege to remove these items. Any help would be appreciated. My network card was installed when I ran the trouble shooting script. Please send me any suggestions on how I can make this work. All thoughs are appreciated. I have already described here the problems with wireless access and crashes in previous messages. In short, after two months of flawless wireless experience using wirelessdriver for 10.1.4 on TiPB 500, OSX 10.1. 5 I started crashing after wake up from sleep. The Skyline prism card 11MB always remained inserted. Since this happened right after I downloaded QuickTime 6, iTunes3, .Mac and RealOne Player for X I thought it was a bug related to the new programs basically set for 10.2. From FAQ I knew that OSX crashes once the card is removed when the computer is awake. First I played with it then I trashed and reinstalled wirelessdriver for 10.1.4 because I thought it was corrupted. It wasn't. I still had intermittent difficulties to log on wi-fi but usually I was successful. However, the crashes with the card inserted after wake up continued and my HD regularly damaged and needed repairs after each crash. It required going back to 9.2.2 and use DiskWarrior. Only after replacing the Skyline card with a new one the problems disappeared. The lesson is that the faulty card may still function but cause repeated crashes of OSX and HD damage. I think wirelessdriver is a solid software. I am looking forward to the 10. 2 upgrade. Milan |

You could keep the Orinoco card in the cardbus slot when starting up at work, even though you're not using it. Here is what I do, and it works reliably. At the old location: Switch to a network location that is PPP (dial up) only, using the built-in modem (thus, the machine never sees the removal of an interface device) Sleep the PowerBook Remove the Orinoco card After arriving at the new location: Insert the Orinoco card Wake the PowerBook Switch to the proper Network location If this new location is home/wireless, open the Wireless Prefs pane and connect to your wireless network FruitMenu enables very easy location switching in the Apple menu. $7 at <http://www.unsanity.com/goto/buy-fruitmenu/> Or, as Rob says, upgrade to 10.2 when it's available. -- Russ Cusimano |

Rest assured, there is a solution in the works. The problem is actually due to an oversight in OS X. Version of OS X prior to Jaguar don't support the removal of a network interface from the system and, as a result , they panic. I have been investigating a work-around for this, but it also provides another incentive to upgrade. -Rob On Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at 06:31 AM, Leonard Spell wrote: > I would appreciate it if someone would fix the kernel panic. The original graphite base stations used Lucent WaveLAN Silver cards inside and, while they are electrically similar to Apple's Airport card (Apple buys the hardware from Lucent), Apple cannot update/upgrade them with firmware or features that Lucent is not willing to release for those cards. Think about it: If your company had a stack of silver cards they bought for $100 each and they found out that if they had a graphite base station they could convert them to gold cards and make them worth 3 or 4 times as much, how many accountants would it take to make that decision? > > While at MacWorld, the press room had a wireless network which > was password protected. If you could connect in OS 9 but not in OS X, then it's not a hardware issue, but a problem with either the driver's WEP support or the configuration. -Rob |

I would appreciate it if someone would fix the kernel panic. I am using 10.1.5, orinoco gold, dhcp, connected to a SMC router. It doesn't matter how I do it, whenever the card is reinserted I get the kernel panic. I have to switch from a wired network (work) to a wireless (home) everyday. If it's the original Apple Base Station (graphite) then that might be the problem. It seems even if you updated it, it doesn't support 128 bit encryption <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120121> To quote, "Note: Earlier versions of the AirPort Base Station (Graphite) cannot be upgraded to 128-bit encryption." The Orinoco Gold is a 128 bit card and the current sourceforge wireless driver does not support 40 bit base stations with this card (see the F.A.Q. at http://wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net/faq.html). Specifically, it says, "128-bit WEP is supported when connecting to 128-bit access points, 40-bit access points (like the original Basestation) are NOT supported." This is something on my wishlist. I bought the Orinoco Gold thinking I could connect to 128 bit stations out there but it's a real pain getting the password to WEP encrypted Apple Base Stations (I know, it's Apple's fault). -- Esver Camacho mailto:1e...@be... mailto:es...@ma... If an original Apple Base Station (Graphite) has been updated does it now support 128 bit encryption? The Orinoco Gold is the 128 bit encryption version of the card. Does this combination work? While at MacWorld, the press room had a wireless network which was password protected. I could get in while booted in OS 9 but not in OS X. When I input the password under "Use WEP encryption with text version of hex key" I had a signal but could not connect to the web or scan for the base station. -- Esver Camacho mailto:1e...@be... mailto:es...@ma... Hello I've just got a version of a menubar signal meter working. You can fetch it from http://touchstone.millersville.edu/~dbross/SigMeter.tar.gz. I need some feedback on it before I include it into the CVS and if anyone out there can design a better set of meter tiffs that would be helpful. (for those designing meter tiffs) Size limitations: height 16 pixels, width just keep it somewhat reasonable. 6 images ranging from no signal to full signal. Don't take other's copyrighted material. I also have a startup item ready, but it is as of now a bear to install, if you wish to use it email me and I'll send you the startup item and the directions. This will be released normally once I find a way of automating the install of it. -- Dave |

Hi, I have the same wish for features as mentioned in this prior email. I use a Skyline to connect to a linksys base. I can't use WEP. Renaming my network seems useless. I've had trouble with neighbors accidentally logging onto my base & my portable logging onto their network. I'd love to hear if there are any plans. I have a PBG3 Lombard with an Orinoco Silver card. I'm using an Airport Base Station rather than a Linksys access point, but I have experience with Linksys access points and cards. I have Lucent range-extending antenna connected to my base station, as well. I my situation, I have seen great fluctuations in signal strength, including dropping to zero for what seems like an eternity. I'm certain there are at least three things going on: 1. Definitely interference from my 2.4 GHz phone system 2. Relative placement of the access point and PB. My house is full of surprising dead spots 3. Some wireless cards seem to not want to reconnect with the base after a severe signal drop-out. I have a Netgear card, for example, that has to be manually told to rescan for a signal in those situations. Changing the network channel at the base station has produced good results for me. Try a channel as far as possible (numerically) from the one you're currently using and see if the signal quality improves. It's a trial and error process. Keep a log of channel settings and observations. -- Russ Cusimano |
