I'm running the same set up except for using an Orinoco Silver card. I have had zero problems. I have never used WEP, though, because of reported problems pre-dating OS X. Anyway, here is how I have protected my network: 1. It is a "closed network" in that it has a network name (SSID) that is (I believe) not broadcast. One must know the network name to use the network. 2. I use "Access Control" on the base station - a white list of wireless devices' MAC addresses that allowed access to my network 3. I assign static IP addresses to all my machines and have disabled the DHCP server in my router. 4. No Apple file sharing. I use Timbuktu Pro, known users only, no guests. While my unencrypted data is certainly open to anyone who can detect my network's rf signal, recognize it, record it, and decode it, I can't imagine anyone having that much interest in it. On the other hand, I'm pretty confident no one can park in front of my house and use any of my network assets. In combination with my broadband firewall, this is the most important wireless security to me, although it may not meet your security needs. Check out Sunday morning's Doonsbury. BTW, I think the password confusion might be because the base station only requests one at network log-in when WEP is enabled. -- Russ Cusimano |

The WEP problem is known. I've been busy working on some other projects recently, so I will be looking at it very soon. It does work on Lucent-based cards, but not on Intersil-based ones. The answer is bound to be something simple, but... -Rob On Sunday, July 21, 2002, at 02:27 PM, Lee Phillips wrote: > I don't know if the problem is the Skyline card, but I use the > Lucent (Orinoco) > with this driver, and it works fine on my bronze (Lombard) powerbook, > including WEP. I don't know if the problem is the Skyline card, but I use the Lucent (Orinoco) with this driver, and it works fine on my bronze (Lombard) powerbook, including WEP. You enter the password in the obvious place, the "Network Equivalent Key" field in the driver panel. |

I used my Orinoco Gold card in a G3 running OS X to connect to a Linksys AP at work. No need to put the $ in front of the hex key - just ensure you are using the same key for both. Hello, after installing OSX on a powerbook, assuming the skyline would have drivers, and then assuming Apple would just support it, I learned that I would have but one choice, which are the drivers you guys made. I used the beta4 version, I had some problems that make it non-usable for me, I am a web developer, so coder more or less, but wanted to pass this on... To start, the only way it works 100% of the time is wide open, no WEP, no closed network, static IP's etc, unsecure, let anyone roam into my network. There is zero success with WEP at all, and as a matter of fact, I think playing with the WEP settings will get you in a bind where you may have to reinstall to get it to work. I was able to get a somewhat closed network to operate. The docs say to enter in the network name and password, there is no field for password, this confuses me. Furthermore, my ibook can not longer get on the network unless I supply the closed network no password. There is some security hole here, I think. I can not at least find out where to stick in any password for the closed network. Without WEP, closed network, and all the other goodies, I just can not use it, when might I expect this functionality? ------------------------------------------------------------- Scott Haneda Tel: 415.898.2602 http://www.newgeo.com Fax: 313.557.5052 sc...@ne... I have a question for the developer of the OSX drive. After 2 months of flawless performance of the beta drive my OSX 10.1.5 started crashing when the Skyline prism card remained inserted and the TiPB was put to sleep. When I woke the Ti it crashed. This wasn't happening before. Could it be related to defective card or to OSX modified by recent download of QuickTime 6, RealOne Player and iTunes3 vis a vis the beta driver which is going to be modified for OSX 10.2? For the time being I can't use OSX. Milan |

OK. Sorry about the daily listings posting. I was clicking on the Archive link. (I know, embarrassing!) To start over, I have Powerbook with a silver Wavlan Card. I am running OS 10.1.5. I installed the new driver and the Wireles Config panel shows up just fine. After installing the Driver, I at first got a strong signal on an open network. As soon as I opened my browse= r and started accessing anything the signal level dropped to something under 27 percent and was no longer strong enough to make a connection. Rebooting doesn=B9t help. The signal stays low. When I run the Wavlan card in OS 9 it works fine. When I access my Airport Base station by way of an ethernet cable type connection, I can access the Base Station with the Airport Admin utility in OS X . Something is making the signal strength go down in OS 10.1.5. so that I can=B9t be wireless or access the Base Station. The Base Station is an original one.(graphite) Any ideas? Thanks. IM |

I have Mac PB Ti 500 running OSX 10.1.5 and use Skyline proxim 802.11 PC Card for wireless. Until downloading upgrades QuickTime 6, iTunes 3 and RealOne Player for OSX the connection worked flawlessly. I had my card inserted permanently and just switched network preferences from internal modem for dialup to wireless configuration for wi-fi. Since downloading the above upgrades for OSX when I put PB to sleep and then activate again the pointer runs erratically and the preferences freeze. It's a crash after which I have to restart. When I shut down and remove the card everything comes back to normal. The startup is much faster than with the card in. Has anyone had similar experience? Is there conflict between the card and the upgraded programs? Milan |

Pushing the eject button will force the computer to wake up so it can handle the request. All other models do not have the motorized eject mechanism, so this isn't an issue for them. The PCCard cage isn't really that fragile. It does have two screws that are used to hold it in alignment that, should they become loose or misaligned, will cause the cards to fall out of the cage or not maintain proper contact with the connector in the back of the frame. Apple used to sell to dealers a block of plastic that can be used to align the card frame. Since they frown on dealers doing PowerBook service these days, I don't know how many dealers will be able to help you much if you get it mucked up. If you need it and are comfortable taking your powerbook apart, I can walk you through realigning it with the block. The bottom slot should be much less prone to alignment issues than the top one. If you're concerned about yanking the card out, I'd use this slot to do it. -Rob On Thursday, July 18, 2002, at 10:03 AM, <ken...@ef...> wrote: > from the FAQ: > >> Why does my powerbook have a kernel panic when I re-insert my card? >> >> This is a bug in Apples PCCard support. When I try to eject my card in sleep mode, the computer wakes up again--thwarting the whole idea of removing while asleep, as it then notices the card is being removed. Reinserting will thus cause a kernel panic. I noticed that if I physically yank the card out, it *will* slide out. I've heard of the PC card cages being sort of flimsy on my model of PowerBook, though. Does anyone have any advice regarding the wisdom of physically pulling out the card? I hate shutting down my computer every time I want to move around, but I guess I'd rather not snap my antenna off (by leaving it in) or have a broken PC card slot (by physically yanking it out too many times). Any advice would be appreciated. - Ken |

Try to ping your router, or another machine on your LAN, using its IP number, to see if your network is working (in the Terminal, type "ping 198.0.0.1", or whatever your router's IP number is). If you get a response but can't get to addresses on the outside using their domain names, then your network is functional but you have a DNS problem. If ping gives no response from local IP numbers, then, although you see signal, your 'book is not talking to anything. I found your previous post and see that you're using an Airport: in that case the Airport is your router, and you need to know its IP address. If ping fails, make sure WEP encryption is disabled both on the Airport and on the WirelessDriver, and try again. |

It sounds similar to a problem I'm having with my linksys base station, although I doubt it's the base station's fault. Using MacOS X and a Gold Orinoco card, the card will refuse to recognize the base station with wirelessdriver unless I either turn off and on the bases station, I restart the computer, or I go on 9 and use apple's airport drivers. It experiences the same problem with other base stations. > Steve Lunetta |

Do you recall where you found the info? I think they've taken the page off because I can find it anymore. The new page says to contact Apple if rebooting doesn't work. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88159 Rob sent out a nice link to a company that will repair your base station for you, but if you can handle a soldering iron, you can do it yourself. Here are the directions I checked out prior to fixing mine. http://www.vonwentzel.net/ABS/Repair.html It cost me under a $1 for each of the two capacitors to fix the problem. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me off-list. Later, scott -- Scott Gustafson mailto:sc...@ad... Adobe Systems Incorporated 408 536.4904 |

Apple has identified a problem with a small number of AirPort=20 Base Stations that causes them to continuously blink status=20 lights, not respond to wired or wireless connections and reset=20 every few seconds=97even after a hard reset. The problem affects=20 AirPort Base Stations in the following serial number range:=20 PW940XXXXXXX to PW952XXXXXX. Customers with an AirPort Base=20 Station in the serial number range with the aforementioned=20 symptoms should call 1-800-APL-CARE in the U.S. and=20 1-800-263-3394 in Canada to make arrangements for a replacement. If they won't or can't help, check out=20 <http://www.BaseStationRescue.com> Apple has been known, when appropriate, to repair base station=20 outside of this range under the same extended service terms. =20 I'd suggest contacting them and following their=20 instructions/suggestions before doing anything else. If your=20 base station is capable of booting, they will likely recommend=20 doing a "forced Reload" first. see=20 <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=3D58613> for=20 instructions on this procedure. -Rob On Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at 04:57 PM, Steven Lunetta wrote: > I've tried finding the info at Apple's web site and can't seem=20 > to come up with the right words for a search. If it is an original model of the base station, check the serial number against Apple's recall notice to see if you have an affected model. Sounds like you have one from the behavior your describing. Basically, in the original model there was a defect with two capacitors used in the power supply. After leaving the thing on for a long period of time the caps heat up and cook themselves to death. Then you get power supply problems in the unit and it stops working. Usually you start getting flashing error codes on the lights and it never changes from that after each reboot. Both mine lasted for a year before destructing. I've had this happen to two of my original models. I'm not sure if Apple is still fixing these, but you can easily fix it by getting a better set of caps and replacing them yourself. There are a few web sites that document the process. Some go even as far as installing a fan in the unit to keep it cool. Later, scott -- Scott Gustafson mailto:sc...@ad...
