Be extremely careful with step D section 3 of the terminally challenged fix. If you are going to use Textedit for this purpose you must FIRST change it's preference setting to save plain text. Otherwise it will create a RTF file and you will be hosed. Marty |

Hello all, I am new to the list but a user of the Wireless Driver since beta 2. Thanks to the many developers for all your great work. In following the recent threads concerning the problems encountered by upgrading to 10.2, I have found a work-around fix for those list members who may not wish to try their hand at using the Terminal. In other words, people like myself who may feel Terminally Challenged. Thanks to Robert, Michael and all the rest who posted various fixes that got rolled into this one. If you are trying to newly install or re-install the Wireless 1.0.0 Beta 4 drivers do all the following steps, if you have the Beta 4 driver installed already skip to Step D: Step A Do this first: 1. Download Pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/Pacifist.dmg 2. Mount the Pacifist disk image 3. Copy the application to your hard drive. 4. Mount the Wireless Driver 1.0.0 Beta 4 disk image http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wirelessdriver/WirelessDriverBeta4.sit 5. Copy the Installers folder to your hard drive Step B Go into the Installers folder. Install the following components in this order: 1. Wireless Config Terminal Tool.pkg 2. WirelessDriver 1.0.0beta4.pkg Following the WirelessDriver install you will be forced to Restart your Mac. Step C Once you are back up, run Pacifist (from Robert's directions). 1. In the Pacifist window, Click Open Package... 2. Select Wireless Preference Pane.pkg in the Installers folder. /Installers/Wireless Preference Pane.pkg. 3. Click the triangle to Open the Package Contents. 4. Click to highlight WirelessDriver PPane.prefPane. 5. Click Extract To... 6. Navigate the dialog box to /System/Library/PreferencePanes or just /Library/PreferencePanes (this should work as it is where the installer will place it, but it is untested.) 7. Click Choose. Step D Next, go to /System/Library/Extensions and find the WirelessDriver.kext file. 1. Control Click on the file and choose Show Package Contents. 2. Open the Contents folder 3. Open the Info.Plist at the root of Contents with either BBEdit or TextEdit. BBEdit provides line numbers so it might be easier, but I did it with TextEdit and counted the lines just fine. Just make sure you make the window big so you do not count a wrapped line by accident. 3. Find lines 33 & 34. They should look like this: <key>IOKitDebug</key> <string>65535</string> 4. Remove these lines and do not leave any blank lines between the entries above and below. 5. Save 6. A warning dialog box will come up and say Couldn't Save... Click the Overwrite button. 7. Quit your text editor. Step E And the final step - fix the permissions 1. Highlight the WirelessDriver.kext file at /System/Library/Extensions. 2. Choose Get Info from the File Menu. 3. Open the Ownership & Permissions section 4. Click the lock to unlock. 5. Change Owner to System. It may ask for your Administrator login and password here, if so enter it. 6. Change Group to Wheel. 7. Click the lock to lock the file. 7. Repeat this for the WirelessDriver PPane.prefPane wherever you put it. Either in /System/Library/PreferencePanes or just /Library/PreferencePanes. That's it.... it will work just fine. Good Luck, Brian |

Hello, Following the earlier instructions regarding Jaguar installation of Wireless Driver Beta 4, as well as the instructions on editing the Plist file, I have a pretty good thing going. Most notably (compared to the disastrous consequences of the past), ejecting and re-inserting the PC card does not cause a crash. As a matter of fact, it works 95% I'd say -- after re-inserting the card, the en1 interface is set up automatically. The only problem is that after this reinsertion, the en1 interface gets a self-served IP address (169.*). To get it working right, you have to launch either the WirelessConfig PrefPane or the Application -- simply launching it will cause the interface to establish connection. I'd say, this is pretty darn close to perfect. :-) Details : MacOS 10.2, totally clean install Lombard (PowerBook G3 1999) 400mhz Lucent WaveLAN Silver Wireless Driver Beta 4 Open Network, WEP enabled Enjoy, David Pisoni |

My Lombard could never see my recently acquired Netgear MA401 Wireless card with the Wirelessdriver.kext (the latter being modified for OSX 10.2, per instructions posted recently in this mailing list). Digging into the ioreg, I found out the Netgear card had a signature of "pccardb,7300", which is not matched in any of the IONameMatch inside the property list of the Wirelessdriver.kext. This is curious, as the Netgear MA401 is listed as supported in the FAQ. Maybe it's a new rev card or something. Nevertheless, I've modified my Info.plist and added the IONameMatch of the "everything else" IOKitPersonalities, and presto, the card is now recognized and enabled, and works great once network configured. Sadly, WEP still doesn't work, as expected. Anyway, mr McKeever, would you care adding this card in the driver permanently ? and maybe check out if WEP could be supported ? Thanks! Here's the ioreg info by the way : "VersionOneInfo" = ("NETGEAR MA401RA Wireless PC","Card","ISL37300P","Eval-RevA") "IOName" = "pccardb,7300" |

Tobbi, I can't help with a driver for this - the card is a frequency hopping card based on a chipset which is different to the ones supported by this driver. However, assuming you're in Iceland, you can maybe get some help from the guys at the University of Bifr=F6st. They're using these cards and while the majority of the notebooks in use are HP Omnibook XE3s, I seem to remember a couple of Powerbooks floating around last time I was there (which was about a year or so ago). I have no idea if they managed to get them onto the LAN, but they have a very knowledgeable IT department who would know all sorts o= f tricks with these cards. Best of luck! Has anybody figured out why Jag. on the Wallstreet is not showing the wireless card as a network option in the Network preferences? I've installed a million and one ways and still can't seem to figure it out. Placing the card in prompts an indicator to go up on the menu bar that has a faded (unselectable) option labeled "lucent" but I can't select it. When I put in a PCMCIA modem card, it changes to different options but again, none selectable. I wonder if for some reason, Jag. can't use the PCMCIA slots on Wallstreet (Rev. 1) Powerbooks. Has anyone tried this driver with a pci carrier? I noticed that most of the pci cards are just carriers for pc cards - therefore - wouldn't the driver work for them as well? Hello again, I managed to get it to work now. I couldn't use the Terminal due to that it always gave me the error "modify command unknown", I'm not an UNIX expert and I couldn't find a way to get around this. Then I looged in as root, opened the info.plist in BBEdit, removed line 33 and 34, made the file writeable and saved. After a reboot everything works fine. I've also changed line 34 to integer instead of string in info.plist, but I haven't tried that version yet. I'm not sure if this is a "good way" but now my daughter is happy again, I've had our DSL modem connected directly to my computer since Friday which she didn't like. /Nils >Hello, > >I have a PB 400 bronze keyboard, 10.2 and the Farallon/Proxim 802.11b card >I found this fix in the archive but it didn't work for me, > >> 1) "sudo chmod -R ugo-w >> /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext" >> 2) "sudo chown -R root.wheel >> /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext" >> 3) Modify >> /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext/Contents/Info.plist", >> removing the 2 line entry for IOKitDebug on lines 33 and 34 (it's not >> needed >> except during development and was incorrectly typed as a string when it >> should have been an integer) >> 4) run "sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions" > > >I got an error on "ugo", what am I missing here, typo? > >/Nils > > > > >------------------------------------------------------- >This sf.net email is sponsored by: OSDN - Tired of that same old >cell phone? It appears as though the beta-5 release has some significant problems...please wait for Rob to put together another (working) version of beta-5. In the meantime, you can marvel at the speed differences between 10.1.5 and 10.2 while using 10.1.5 for wireless web connections, or you can try applying the patch rob posted earlier this week to the list. We hope to have this all sorted out soon. Yuriwho p.s. I'm back from summer travels now.....and whoever posted the unofficial release of b5 to VersionTracker should be shot (you know who you are!). |

Hi - I installed the b5 version of the wireless driver. (Powerbook G3/233, Farallon Skyline Wireless card). Upon restart, I get a kernal panic. If I eject the card, the computer will start up with the b5 driver installed, but it crashes every time with card installed. I ran the uninstaller script included with b5, then reinstalled, but that didn't solve the problem -- kernal panic every time. Bryan Golder br...@go... |

Thanks Dave, I figured it out before I saw your reply, I dropped into the installer folder, installing each piece separately. To install the PrefPane I had to point it to the System/Library/PreferencePanes/ directory. That with the Info.plist edit got it working. It seemed have erractic problem, the biggest symptom being nearly continous "Connection Refused" errors in Mozilla, but seeming to work in MSIE. :-( Then saw beta5 was posted. As others have reported, this is crashing the computer. Either getting a freeze on start-up with the card in or an emergency Restart message if the card is inserted while running. -Eric |

I appreciate the efforts Rob and others have put it on this support for 10.2, but my Wallstreet is having major freak outs. First, I installed the latest driver, and upon restart with my Orinoco card in, the gray Apple start-up screen froze about half through start-up and the display got a 3-inch band of messed up pixels across it. Then, I restarted with the card out and checked the WirelessConfig Preference Pane (seemed OK), then Network (my old settings from 10.1.5 were intact), and the inserted the Orinoco card. BAM! Same thing, except this time the display went into a light gray cast over the desktop and a faint but legible error message informed me in three (or four?) languages that I had the restart the machine because of a system problem. I tried one more time with the card in at start-up--no go. It's definitely something with the combo of card and driver. Any ideas? I'm curious if other Wallstreet owners have experienced similar problems. Sincerely, Gerald Figal |

yeah b5 out makes me happy! unfortunately b5 does not like my lombard 333 running 10.2, threw up a couple of kernel panic/backtraces booting verbose and had to remove it manually from single-user mode. manually trying to kextload -t /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext from a clean install after running the b5 removal scripts produced this: kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext has problems: Validation failures { "Kext has a kernel dependency prior to version 6.0 and CFBundleVersion does not match executable's MODULE_VERSION" = true } otherwise the new prefpane looks nice, can't wait to try the sig/noise graph.... and thanks for getting something out so quickly! Hi all, I've (finally) posted a build of the driver built for OS X 10.2 to my iDisk. The can be reached via the following URL: <http://homepage.mac.com/robm> This installer is a preliminary release. I will post it to SourceForge in the usual place and make an announcement to VersionTracker once I've had a few feedback reports. This build is, essentially, a top-of-tree build from the CVS archives. I have made several changes to it to support compilation under Jaguar and have added a few lines of code towards trying to solve the AppleTalk issue, although I haven't had any opportunity to test that yet. Let me know how you make out with it and I'll get whatever changes done that need to be made and make a final announcement. -Rob McKeever ro...@ma... |

Is there a problem that would prevent the installer from working in 10.2? I understand that it won't work without the patch that has been posted, but I am getting "There were errors installing the software. Please try installing again." The only thing I have tried that made a difference was choosing a target folder, which dumped all the files into that folder, nothing in System/Library/Extensions/ Thanks in advance . . . |
