Thanks Rob for the new driver. I hope this will work for everyone. It seems like the best way to install this is to first uninstall the old version and then install this one twice.... no personal experience here, just reading the posts and your notes in your original post. Remember folks, there is a uninstaller script in the disk image, all you need to do is double click it. Bruce, you will get rid of your duplicate pref panes by running the uninstaller. Vix... nice workaround you posted yesterday. Never thought of approaching it that way. It was a lot simpler. I installed 1.0.0b5.1 using the installer package. It's not working. I had been using my Lucent gold card with X 10.1 with no problem. I now have two WirelessConfig icons in my "Other" preferences panel. I ran the install package twice, it didn't work, and I ran it twice more. The second WirelessConfig icon appeared after the first of the four installs. The Lucent card did not light up and the panel was dimmed. I restarted the computer and the Lucent card came to life but it is getting no signal. It did find my ABS after the restart and entered the ABS's name into the "Connect to wiireless network named:" panel but the signal strength meter is mute. I have a TiPB 500 using OX 10.2 which has an internal Apple Airport card. Both worked with OS X 10.1 and I had not yet removed the internal card. I'm using it now to connect to the ABS. What next? Will there need to be a GUI uninstaller for the UNIX challenged like me? Why do I have two Wireless Config icons in the preference panel? ---bwr |

I just tried the latest Version on my Lombard Powerbook running OS 10.2. After the first installation failed (as Rob had predicted because I had a previous version installed), the second installation went fine. I then restarted, but the WaveLan card is still not recognized in Network Configurations (it is grayed out). I then shut down and restarted with the same result. |

Rob, Brian, and all--I finally got the Lucent card up and running on my Wallstreet II under Jaguar. Strangely, the first install of beta5.1 didn't "take"--in other words, the WirelessDriver.ktext wasn't written to System/Library/Extensions even though the installer said "successful installation." Stefan--You might want to try what I did: uninstall beta5.1 (with uninstaller Terminal Script) and reinstall and restart with the card in the slot throughout the entire process. After restart, check to make sure WirelessDriver.ktext was indeed installed. I then went to WirelessConfig and actually saw signs of activity (a number appeared on the right side of the signal strength bar) and the network name box was accessible. I then put my network name in and clicked "apply." Network preferences then detected en(1) and listed it as an option. That's it! I'll run it a while, restart, etc. and report on stability later, but it looks very good right now. Three cheers for Rob and Company and all of the useful feedback I've gotten here. |

Hey all - If it helps - I managed to get my linksys card working with a wallstreet 300mhz. 1. Uninstall the previous version (uninstaller script from new b5 download) 2. Install developer tools 3. Reinstall b5 4. 2) Open terminal and run "sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext" That's it. I didn't have to mess with the plist. Should I change it anyway? John |

Thanks for the quick update, Rob, but it looks as if Stefan and I are in the same boat--just installed 5.1 on my WSII/Jag/Lucent Gold and no en(1), no active lights, no response at all from card. I still get the icon in the menu bar, but all I can do with it is eject card. It's as if there's no power to the card. I tried both slots to no avail (and all my other PC cards work fine). Now I'm really puzzled, especially since some Wallstreet owners seem to be having success. Oh yeah, the card still works fine in 9.2 and 10.1.5. I'm pretty much stumped now... |

Tried Brian's method with reverse order of package installs with same result. Then I tried vix's alternative, but got stuck trying to open the WirelessDriver.ktext file in BBEdit (or TextEdit)--it just wouldn't allow me to open it, even after batchmod (checked all r, w, and x boxes). I'm calling it a day--I hope tomorrow is more successful. I wonder if there's any word on a new beta5 installer? I feel like I'm in a Catch-22. Still, I appreciate all the help and feedback from you all on this. I know it'll eventually work... |

Brian-- Thanks for keeping up with us on this. To answer your question, I also put the pref pane in /System/Library/PreferencePanes. Now, if I wanted to uninstall and retry with the reverse order (if that would really matter), what should I do (i.e. how to uninstall and start over)? |

Hi folks, For goyaboy, Mr. Moe Moe, and MacPG... Where did you install the pref pane to? I put it in /System/Library/PreferencePanes. One other thing I just realized I did, and maybe this is a bigger change than I thought. I said: "Step B Go into the Installers folder. Install the following components in this order: 1. Wireless Config Terminal Tool.pkg 2. WirelessDriver 1.0.0beta4.pkg Following the WirelessDriver install you will be forced to Restart your Mac." When I actually installed them in reverse order. I listed them this way because of the restart and thought it would save a step. Maybe the driver needs to be there first. That was dumb.... I hope that is not the case. Sorry, Brian At 9:40 PM -0400 8/28/02, goyaboy wrote: >Thanks for the clarification on your scenario, Brian. I can't resist posting this. I also wrote a tutorial for the terminally-challenged. It's a little bit different in that it calls for using Batchmod, but it also works. Installing the wireless driver GUI stylee: You will need these 3 apps, available at www.versiontracker.com: Batchmod, BBEdit, and Pacifist. They are good to have around anyway. 1. download WirelessDriverBeta4 2. mount it and open the Installers folder. Just run this 1 installer: WirelessDriver 1.0.0beta4.pkg. Restart. 3. Now click your merry way down to the file you just installed, WirelessDriver.kext (located in yourharddrive/System/Library/Extensions/) 4. Use Batchmod to change the permissions so you can r w and x like a master of the universe. That is, drag and drop WirelessDriver.kext on top of Batchmod and check the r, w and x boxes. 5. Open the file WirelessDriver.kext in BBEdit and delete the 2 line entry for IOKitDebug on lines 33 and 34. 6. Save it and put it back where it was (yourharddrive/System/Library/Extensions/). 7.Now use Pacifist to install Wireless Preference Pane.pkg to yourharddrive/System/Library/PreferencePanes. It will install WirelessDriver PPane.prefPane. 8. Insert wireless card in and restart. Thanks for the clarification on your scenario, Brian. It seems that we have a very similar setup (I'm WS II, Jag, Lucent Gold), except that I'm working on a cleanly installed 10.2 and cleanly installed beta4 as per your "Pacifist" procedure. Yet Mr. Moe Moe, MacPG, and I all have the same problem. (For the record, I tried my wife's Proxim card--same result). I don't see how a clean install as opposed to your update install of 10.2 would make a difference (and it seems that's our only difference). I could uninstall beta4 and try again, but that might just be a waste of time. Any other suggestions, anyone--I seem so close to getting this thing to work. |

Hi, b4 ran quite fine under 10.1.5 (with the usual hassles) but even with manually installed prefpane it won't run under Jaguar. I also tried to restrict the access right (why ist this important BTW?) and modify the lines in the Info.plist while these are not in the skyline entry and the whole thing worked well under 10.1.5 (I already mentioned that, did I :) The Skyline entry reads HFA384x/IEEE in the menu bar popup while it's HFA3843x/IEEE in the Info.plist. But it worked under 10.1... Interestingly neither System Profile nor the IORegistry Explorer provide info on the card (just on the slot, "pccard" for both slots). It's the same under 10.1.5 BTW. But the menu bar thingy should get the name somehow. Since it seems that the driver doesn't recognize the card, how can I get the io name so that I could insert it into the plist? Apple knows that there are machines with two pccard slots, do they? I'd really like to use Jaguar with the card instead of rebooting into 10.1.5 for each network access. Thanks for all the good work. I'd liked to see it from Proxim/Farallon themselves, but the seem to be unable to do their job. -Stefan |

Hello folks. Just want to clarify a few things from my earlier post. I see some are having problems. I have a WallSteet II, 10.2, and Lucent Silver wireless card. It worked immediately for me with the steps provided. So maybe there is something else different going on here that made the change work for me and not others. My scenario: 1. Installed 10.2 as an Update (1st option) 2. After starting with Wireless card in noted I could see it but its lights were off and the Network panel didn't recognize it. 3. I Uninstalled it using the uninstaller script provided. 4. tried reinstalling and it failed, actually placing the components in my Applications folder. 5. The next day I tried my process after reading all the posts about it. I choose the process I did took for the following reasons. 1. I had noted that the Get Info now included permissions and you could change them at will. (and this is a very dangerous thing) 2. TextEdit now appeared to maintain file type when opening and saving an existing document. Much like BBEdit. Because of these two functionality changes from 10.2, I decided to try a non-terminal solution. I will be more than happy to work with anyone trying to figure this out. Marty, I appreciate you post of caution. I did not even look at the preference options before doing this. I assumed it would just work as I had occasion to save some other files and saw how it handled them. That assumption could have been costly. and yea well.... we all know what "assume" means. I could not find the preference you referred to in your post, unless you are talking about the Save option which is defaulted to Automatic. David, Set up a second location in the network prefs. Set this new location for wired ethernet only. When you need to eject your card, change your location to the wired network, go to the menu bar pcmcia icon and click on "Power off card", then it is safe to remove your card. After you re-insert your card, change your location back to wireless network. I've been using this procedure since the beta 4 fix was posted without any DHCP problems at all. As Mr Goyaboy, I confirm that the "wireless driver fix for 10.2 for the Terminally Challenged" doesn't seem to work with the Wallstreet+Jag+Lucent configuration. Anyway, I d'like to thank Rob McKeever for his contribution to my happiness so far, and hope he (and others) will find the trick. |

I just installed the fix for beta4 in 10.2 that Brian outlined (thanks!), but I'm having the exact same problem as Mr. Moe Moe--I get a cool little icon for the Lucent card in the menu bar, but with options grayed out. No connect to base station, no active lights on the card. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the PC card slots on the WS itself under 10.2 because my other cards work fine (Toshiba hard drive PC card, USB card, Firewire card). Are we missing something with Wallstreets that the Lombard owners don't have to deal with? Gerald |
