Leonard, Lucent and Wavelan are grayed out on mine too, but I can tell which slot it is in. I have a firewire card in the bottom. When both are in the Wavelan is listed above the firewire card in the list. First attempt failed with uninstall/reinstall of beta. No green light on card. Tried uninstall, but could see items were still left. Being terminall= y disabled I switched to OS9 searched, found and deleted all files related to wirelessdriver. Reninstalled beta. Success =AD all fine! /Paul |

For what it's worth, I'm using, and having excellent results, with the Beta4 driver, with workarounds. I specifically tried to elicit a kernel panic by removing and reinserting the card, to no avail, so it would appear to me that the Beta4 driver w/ workarounds and 10.2 combination is a winner. I'm using a TiBook 550 and a Orinocco Gold. I'd like to add my thanks to Rob and Yuri for their efforts on the wireless driver. John Lyon |

Sounds like a disk corruption issue. This might be either the cause or the result of the panics you experienced. I'd try running DiskWarrior on your system if you've got it. -Rob On Thursday, August 29, 2002, at 08:24 PM, goyaboy wrote: > Oh well... > My earlier elation is for nought. Can you post the info info you find in the panic.log file in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ so we can see if the WirelessDriver is involved or if it's a CPU bug/other problem. It may be related to the WirelessDriver but it could also be due to other issues. Y On 8/29/02 10:24 PM, "goyaboy" <go...@ma...> wrote: > Oh well... > My earlier elation is for nought. Oh well... My earlier elation is for nought. Beta5.1 w/Lucent card on my WS crashed hard again and this time there seems to be no recovery--I can't boot back into 10.2 at all. I get an endless hang on the gray Apple. It doesn't seem to be a problem with the Sonnet G4 upgrade card either. I pulled it out, put the stock G3 back in, and no boot into Jag. It looks like I'm back into OS 9 and yet another clean install of Jaguar. I can't say for certain if this most recent issue is specific to my system or not, and I don't want to needlessly freak others out, but I'd advise caution still with beta5.1 on a WS with Jaguar. I went through the day emailing and web browsing and transferring files on my WS/Jag/Lucent Gold setup without mishap and then just a few minutes ago while unstuffing a just-downloaded file the card crashed the system in the same manner as when I inserted the card with beta5 (a 4-language "you must restart" dialog box appears and a hard restart is the only way out). Upon restart the WirelessConfig showed an active signal, but the Network IP was messed up--rather than a DHCP-assigned number a "self-assigned" number (it actually said "self-assigned" under the IP number) appeared (169.254.220.54). Needless to say, the card wouldn't connect with the internet despite the signal in WirelessConfig. So I restarted again--and then all was fine. And still is. I was actually surprised by the crash because everything was quite smooth all day. In fact, I was poised to report great stability until this happened (and I would still rate stability on my system quite good, especially since I'm operating right now with a slightly buggy upgraded Sonnet Crescendo G4 cpu in.) So, a bug or two still seems to be lurking, but if it's recoverable with a restart or two I can live with that until the next build. And again, many thanks to Rob & Co. for their fine work! |

Running the uninstaller removed both WirelessConfig icons from the preferences panel. Running, only once, the WirelessDriver Beta5-1.mpkg installed a single WirelessConfig icon. Opening it showed that it had found the ABS - "Apple Network xxxxxx" showed up. There was no signal strength but -147dBm was the value and there is a new signal/noise button. Opening the Network preferences allowed the new service, EthernetAdaptor(en2), to be installed. Returning to WirelessConfig showed that there was now a signal. I'm happy. The closest I had to come to UNIX was typing the system password into the Terminal window which opened when I ran the uninstaller. Thanks to authors and all who helped. ---bwr |

I assume you're using Proxim Skyline PC card. Could you describe step by step installation? Did you first remove the card and instal Jaguar? Did you instal beta5 on top of beta4? Your detailed description would be very helpful. I am hesitant to upgrade 10.1.5 to 10.2 lest to loose beta4 online access which works fine with 10.1.5. Milan |

It's intentional. It's supposed to be so you can identify which card is in the slot. I don't know how much luck you'd have, but you could try suggesting alternative approaches to Apples GUI design team. The menu is maintained by the same guy that does the PCCard support module, but his hands are tied as far as the GU design goes. -Rob On Thursday, August 29, 2002, at 12:00 PM, Leonard Spell wrote: > Now that everyone is fixed - can I be picky? Kextcache? Seems to be the case. After reboot the extension wasn't loaded automatically. So I deleted the kextcache file using sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache and rebooted so that the system rescanned the Extensions folder. Works here. (I guess you could also use kextcache command to rebuild the cache manually) Maybe the installer should have that part added. Thanks a lot, Patrick. Just hadn't /usr/sbin in my PATH and locate also failed on ioreg so I didn't find it. I also tried the IORegistry Browser but followed the wrong path (IODeviceTree ends just before the actual card/bridge entry :/) all the time. With your help I finally found the entry (in IOService). But as I wrote in a earlier posting, it says it's called {"INTERSIL","HFA384x/IEEE",...}, not {"INTERSIL", HFA3843x/IEEE} as in the script. The IOName is "pccard156,2" which is already contained in the name matching sectiom (and was resposible for having it working under 10.1.5, I guess from a look at the ioreg hierarchy in 10.1.5). Of course I changed the VersionOneInfo string even though the card should have matched the "pccard156,2" anyway. Still a no-go. The card's LED is on as soon as I plug it in, but the usual blinking doesn't start, nor is the network discovering the new card (no new entry in Network Prefs). And the Wireless PrefPanes Controls stay disabled. To me it seems that either the whole matching is never done or it doesn't find the card entry or the driver isnt't found/loaded and which classes are loaded. Is there any way to see/log what's going on, when I insert the card? I'll send the registry dump to Rob. -Stefan >To get the ioreg signature for your particular card, open up the >terminal and type : >ioreg -l | grep pccard >Another signature is the VersionOneInfo. Stephan, To get the ioreg signature for your particular card, open up the terminal and type : ioreg -l | grep pccard Another signature is the VersionOneInfo. For this one : ioreg -l | grep VersionOneInfo Now, when you look at the Info.plist file inside the Wirelessdriver.kext (best is to use the Property List Editor from the Developer applications), cards are recognized by either one of those signatures. If you don't see either, then the driver will not load for you card. You can quickly add your card by adding the pccard signature (returned by the first ioreg command above) in the "everything else" IOKitPersonalities (IONameMatch entry). There are currently 5 in there. I added the one from my NetGear card ("pccardb,7300") in there and the driver could see it and use it after loading the kext. You can also create a new IOKitPersonalities directly, by using the ioreg VersionOneInfo signature. Best way is to copy one from the other cards and just change the name and the VersionOneInfo to match your card. I tried that as well and it works great, as long as you're careful to create each small string separately for all the returned strings from ioreg -l | grep VersionOneInfo. I know this sound a little technical, so if you're still uncomfortable about the procedure, let us know. Hi, all, I'm using an orinoco card on a 400 MHz bronze G3. I couldn't get the kernel extension to load, so here's what I did: I went to /System/Library/Extensions and did : # kextload -t WirelessDriver.kext can't add kernel extension WirelessDriver.kext (validation error) (run kextload on this kext with -t for diagnostic output) kernel extension WirelessDriver.kext has problems: Validation failures { "Info dictionary property value is of illegal type" = ( "IOKitPersonalities:Baystack 660 Wireless Network:IOKitDebug" ) } Authentication failures { "File owner/permissions are incorrect" = ( "/system/library/extensions/WirelessDriver.kext" "/system/library/extensions/WirelessDriver.kext/Contents" "/system/library/extensions/WirelessDriver.kext/Contents/MacOS" ) } so I did : # chmod -R 755 WirelessDriver.kext then I did : # kextload -t WirelessDriver.kext can't add kernel extension WirelessDriver.kext (validation error) (run kextload on this kext with -t for diagnostic output) kernel extension WirelessDriver.kext has problems: Validation failures { "Info dictionary property value is of illegal type" = ( "IOKitPersonalities:Baystack 660 Wireless Network:IOKitDebug" ) } So I deleted the first key in Wirelessdriver.kext/Contents/Info.plist. I removed the following lines: <key>Baystack 660 Wireless Network</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>org.noncontiguous.WirelessDriver</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>org_noncontiguous_WirelessDriver</string> <key>IOKitDebug</key> <string>65535</string> <key>IOProbeScore</key> <string>4096</string> <key>IOProviderClass</key> <string>IOPCCard16Device</string> <key>VersionOneInfo</key> <dict> <key>0</key> <string>Bay Networks</string> <key>1</key> <string>BayStack 660 Wireless LAN</string> </dict> </dict> Now everything works good for me, since I'm not using a Baystack wireless network.
