Many, many thanks to Rob and all who worked to allow the technically challenged like myself to reconnect to wireless in OS 10.2 without going into the terminal and root etc. Now a simple question: how do I uninstall the developper tools which are taking up nearly 1G of my 6G hard drive. I realize this may be a very elementary question for most of the readers, but it is beyond the ken of the Apple Care techs. If you can offer any good advice, I would greatly appreciate it. |

Can someone on this list confirm that the SMC wireless access point [7004AWBR] does not support Appletalk? Doug Matheson Dept. of Psychology University of the Pacific Stockton, CA 95211 http://www.uop.edu/cop/psychology/dwm.html |

I'm considering buying a card to use on a Wallstreet under 10.2. My initial needs won't be for WEP capabilities as I'll be using a public access point at a conference, but eventually I'll likely be interested in adding a 128-bit WEP access point to my local network. That said, which of the wireless cards out there should I be looking at? It looks - from the FAQ list - like the Orinoco and WaveLAN cards are among the most popular and may be receiving the lion's share of the attention. Is this the case? -Charles cha...@po... |

Success! After much installing, uninstalling, rebooting, Terminal App-ing, and general frustration I finally figured it out. 1. I went through the stages Yuriwho summarized in the post: 'Troubles with b5-1 installation', logged in with an Admin account. No dice. 2. Went through it all a second time. Incidentally, I've never found a receipt for any install of WirelessDriver. Go figure. 3. Uninstalled from the uninstaller in the .dmg and tried again, but this time did it logged in as root. Success! Absolutely flawless install, Network prefs noticed the new port and added it (en1) and instantly everything came alive. Maybe anyone still having problems should have a go from the root account? This is on a G3 (Bronze keyboard) PowerBook 333MHz with 192MB RAM, an Orinoco Silver card and a (Graphite) Apple Base Station. Phew! I can get my iTunes library moving around with me again! IT WORKS! But you guys knew that :) First time no luck on a pristine system install. Had to revert back to 10.1. Figured I'd give it one more chance and reinstalled 10.2 as an update. en1 was showing on completion with 1.4b wireless still present. Upgraded to the 1.5b installation but then there were 2 control panels. Used the updater and then there were none. Reinstalled and saw some lights on the card (good sign). Restarted after powering down. And things were working without any settings except Use DHCP. Thanks! Steve Guluk |

Well I should've kept my mouth shut. No sooner did I connect via my Wallstreet than I lost the AirPort connex over on my G4 Dualgig. Now I'm right back where I was--seeing signals but not being able to actually access the net. Somehow it's all bound up in checking\unchecking that WEP box-both within the Beta5.1 Wireless config panel and in the AirPort Admin Utility as well. It's like I can toggle from WEP to no-WEP and get signals but no actual net connex. Oh, I wish I'd just shoved the Wallstreet in a drawer and been happy to leave my working AirPort connection on the G4 Dualgig alone. Classic case of spending hours mucking around with the computers, thinking this was going to "save time" once I had it all set up. call me discouraged, Nolan |

Okay, so I've been having many problems with the beta 5.1 However, somehow when I reinstalled it today...(2 times), it worked. Someone posted a message saying to uncheck the WEP encryption. and then, I seemed to have been able to connect to the internet. Well, it works... so I'll leave it at that. Sara |

Hi all. I'm running a version of the wireless drive on my G3 with OSX 10.15. The card & driver seem to work fine except when it comes to appletalk. I notice that when I connect my ethernet cable, things work fine without even a change in settings. Should I have that turned off to get appletalk going via wireless? I can't print right now and don't know if that's related. I'm running things on IPnetrouter with an airport basestation for wireless. At this point, I'm not sure I have the latest driver OR my settings correct. Any pointers on where to begin appreciated. Dale |

Hi Doug, I have the same card, and yes, it appears to be a newer model that requires new support from the wireless driver. I'm not sure when support would be added; I've already given a heads-up on this mailing list a week ago about it. In the meantime, you can still edit the configuration plist file and add the card's ioreg info. I did that and it works beautifully, although WEP won't work regrettably. I will not repeat the instructions here as yuriwho detailed them perfectly in a very recent list mailing. Basically get your ioreg info on the pccard ( command "ioreg -l | grep pccard") and add the string to the "everything else" IONamematch list inside the Info.plist file of the wireless driver. Your ioreg signature should be identical to mine, "pccardb,7300", but it's best to make sure. Patrick |

Tom, et al, I'm connected at last. The missing steps for me had nothing to do with the actual beta driver, which makes sense when I think about it. As I reported earlier, my Wallstreet's Network panel showed a signal but I couldn't get to the Net even after a double install on the 5.1 driver. The reason: I still had the AirPort itself configured for WEP (though I had unchecked WEP in the Wallstreet's Network panel). Went back to the AirPort Admin Utility, clicked Configure and UNchecked WEP. Once base station restarted, I went to Wallstreet's Wireless Config panel to make sure WEP remained UNchecked there as well. Also, in a final flurry of unscientific method (and so this may be complete red herring), I went to the Wallstreet's Network panel and under the TCP/IP tab, made sure Configure was set to "Using DHCP" _and_ (here's the maybe-not-related extra step) made sure the "DNS Servers" and "Search Domains" boxes were BLANK. Then clicked "Apply Now", logged out with a restart, and, voila, I'm connected at last. Hope this sheds some light for other Wallstreeters similarly stumped. I just upgraded to 10.2 and installed the Wireless Driver (I did not use it at all under 10.1). The installation goes successfully, but I never see an interface for the card in the "Network" pane's list. The WirelessConfig pane appears, but everything in it is grayed out. I have tried the "remove Extensions.kextcache, uninstall, install, reboot" sequence suggested on the mailing list, and tried installing the driver twice, to no avail. One thing that may be a factor is that the card is an MA401RA, rather than a regular MA401--I guess it's a newer model. I had to add an entry for it to the PCMCIA devices list to get it working under Linux. Is there something similar I might need to do to register it for the Darwin driver? I am pretty savvy with Unix, but not super-familiar with OS X. I'm happy to run any diagnostics etc if someone will tell me where they are. ;) Here is the troubleshooting script output: ### system info ProductName: Mac OS X ProductVersion: 10.2 BuildVersion: 6C115 Darwin Douglas-McNaughts-Computer.local. 6.0 Darwin Kernel Version 6.0: Sat Jul 27 13:18:52 PDT 2002; root:xnu/xnu-344.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC Power Macintosh powerpc ppc750 ### wireless driver files installed drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 Sep 2 12:00 WirelessDriver.kext drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 Jul 27 16:22 IOPCCardFamily.kext ls: /Library/PreferencePanes: No such file or directory 2002-09-02 12:16:23.887 defaults[435] The domain/default pair of (loginwindow, AutoLaunchedApplicationDictionary) does not exist ### wirelesscard info | +-o pccard@13 <class IOPCIDevice> | | | "device_type" = <"pccard"> | | | "name" = <"pccard"> | +-o pccard@13,1 <class IOPCIDevice> | | "device_type" = <"pccard"> | | "name" = <"pccard"> ### network info lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 16384 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 gif0: flags=8010<POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST> mtu 1280 stf0: flags=0<> mtu 1280 en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet6 fe80::205:2ff:fe87:9ca2%en0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x4 inet 172.16.1.60 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 172.16.1.255 ether 00:05:02:87:9c:a2 media: autoselect (10baseT/UTP <half-duplex>) status: active supported media: none autoselect 10baseT/UTP <half-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> 100baseTX <half-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex> ### wd command line tool status 2002-09-02 12:16:29.100 WirelessConfig[442] Iterations: 0 WirelessDriver: Couldn't find a WirelessDriver service in registry - is the card loaded? 2002-09-02 12:16:34.116 WirelessConfig[442] Iterations: 0 WirelessDriver: Couldn't find a WirelessDriver service in registry - is the card loaded? ^C |

I am successfully using the 1.05b driver with my girlfriends PBG3 Wallstreet (266 384M). I did have to install the driver twice in order for the En1 to appear, and also strangely I had to reboot one time more then I would have expected in order to get my connection going. It seemed to me that playing with the WEP setting was the cause of the extra reboot, but I can'[t be sure. Anyhow I am successfully connected to my Base (PB5300 8.6 IPNetrouter) with no WEP (I would love to have WEP working, but can't seem to resolve that). I am using a pair of Lucent Wavelan Gold cards. Thanks to the developers for keeping us connected! Marty PS at one point I had the wacky LCD backlight going off(and staying off) after sleep problem under 10.2, so I guess that is still an open issue. rebooting into 9.2 and opening the Energy Saver seems to have fixed it... |

To find out for yourself, the relevant information you need is the following: > ### wirelesscard info > > | | "VersionOneInfo" = ("3Com","3CRSHPW_96 Wireless > LAN PC Card$ > | | +-o pccard101,696@0,0 <class IOPCCard16Device> > | | "IOName" = "pccard101,696" This info comes from following terminal command when the card is inserted: ioreg -l | grep pccard Now to test if your card is supportable, you will need to edit the info.plist file in the WirelessDriver.kext file. type the following command in the terminal to edit this file with the pico text editor: sudo pico /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext/Contents/Info.plist look for the following lines: <key>everything else</key> <dict> <key>CFBundleIdentifier</key> <string>org.noncontiguous.WirelessDriver</string> <key>IOClass</key> <string>org_noncontiguous_WirelessDriver</string> <key>IONameMatch</key> <array> <string>pccard156,2</string> <string>pccard1eb,807</string> <string>pccard274,1613</string> <string>pccard274,1612</string> <string>pccard138,2</string> </array> and add your pccard string (pccard101,696) as an entry in this array. i.e.: <array> <string>pccard156,2</string> <string>pccard1eb,807</string> <string>pccard274,1613</string> <string>pccard274,1612</string> <string>pccard138,2</string> <string>pccard101,696</string> </array> to save the file type ctrl-x and accept the changes. View the edited file in the terminal to be sure your changes are correct: more /System/Library/Extensions/WirelessDriver.kext/Contents/Info.plist now try removing and re-inserting the card, if you are lucky it will now work! Let us know if you have success so we can add the card to our list of supported cards. You must configure the network PreferencePane appropriately for your access point. show the network port configurations and drag en1 (or en2 if appropriate) to the top of the list of available network ports. configure your IP Address appropriately and enter the DNS addresses supplied by your ISP. now open the WirelessConfig PreferencePane and enter the name of your wireless network and your password. If your card is recognized by the system (if the menu item appears) and you cant get connected, it is probably due to misconfiguration of your network/access point settings. Try disabling WEP on the accesspoint and manually configuring your ip/subnet/router and DNS numbers. Good luck Y On Sunday, September 1, 2002, at 06:04 PM, Tom Tokoph wrote: > Nolan- > You are now in the same boat as I. Nolan- You are now in the same boat as I. My Wallstreet 300, Lucent Silver sees the airport with a strong signal, but can't actually make a connection to the internet. I've been asking around for help with this problem, but no one has been able to give me a solution. Rob recommended making sure the en(1) port was listed first within the Network Settings, so I tried that, but it didn't change anything. Let me know if anyone has figured this problem out! The port I use with the wireless driver is en2... this is correct if there's an Airport card installed, right? Anyway, since things are humming along flawlessly and my connection is fast and extremely stable, I will leave well enough alone even if it isn't correct =) I am now able to switch between wireless networks at home and at work seamlessly, which is nice and wasn't always the case before I upgraded. 500mhz G4 PB 10.2 Orinoco Silver card beta4 driver installed w/patch 2 pref panes visible in System Preferences, doubtless due to some boneheaded thing I did trying to get the patch to work--but who cares. Hello, I have a G3 PowerBook (Lombard) 192ram and use a Orinoco Silver card to connect to my wireless network. After installing 10.2, no longer is port "en1" available. I've downloaded the latest wireless driver from sourceforge.com but without the computer even seeing or recognizing the en1 port I can't configure further. Anyone else having similar problems? Hi all, I know I must be overlooking something simple, but I can't get the wireless drivers working with a freshly loaded Lombard G3 powerbook and a WaveLAN (Orinoco) Silver card. This works fine under 9.2, but not on Jaguar. I have loaded the beta 5.1 wireless driver and when the card is plugged in, there's a menu item that says "Lucent Technologies WaveLAN/IEEE" and also has a "power off card" item. It doesn't look like the card is ever getting powered on - the light on the card remains off. Here's some more info: * I put the card into a PC laptop and loaded the latest firmware - didn't make any difference. * When I try to do the 'kmodstat' commands listed in the FAQ, it says "command not found" * Here's what I get when I do the 'ioreg' commands: ioreg -l | grep VersionOneInfo | | "VersionOneInfo" = ("Lucent Technologies","WaveLAN/IEEE","Version 01.01","") ioreg -l | grep pccard | | +-o pccard156,2@0,0 <class IOPCCard16Device> | | "IOName" = "pccard156,2" Any hints as to what I can try next ?? Many thanks, Phil |

Hi all, Thanks big time for the Terminal help. It was easy and immediately made my Lucent card available in the Network panel. Unfortunately, even though I now get a signal, I still can't seem to reach the Net. The browser just returns a "can't find server" message after a bit. Hmmmm....so close. Still, thanks for the tip on removing Extensions.kextcache Nolan At 4:30 PM -0400 8/31/02, Brian Fountain wrote: >At 8:42 AM -0400 8/31/02, Jason Huck wrote: >>Hmmm. I am using the beta 5 version that supports os 10.2 but I'm having major problems.here's a timeline . I installed the drivers Card is not recognized so I try rebooting From then on, my computer will not go more then 5 or ten minutes without freezing, forcing me to restart.it doesn't seem to be any particular action.very random, sometimes freezing at startup I used the uninstaller, but the problem persists I restarted and booted off the os 10.2 cd and started a reinstall of the os After the reinstall, there was no crashing, but the card still didn't work I reinstalled the drivers, and this time.everything worked.wireless, and no freezing Then my computer died in it's sleep When I started it up from sleep, the screen was just black.no response.and when I restarted.I had the freezing problem again.but the wireless was partially working.only sometimes And.if the card was in during startup, it would wait almost 5 miuntes where it said "waiting for network initialization" So now I am reinstalling the os to stop the crashing problem SYSTEM Stats Powerbook G3 Series (bronze keyboard) 256 mb ram 400mhz processor Wireless card is a sony vaio card (card actually made by Orinoco/Lucent) Also.I know the card works because with system 9, I was able to make the card work seamlessly with the Orinoco drivers with my sony card PLEASE.any ideas?!?!? eric |
