Tom, The "router" Richard refers to is not the cable modem. As far as I=20 know, the cable modems currently available do not allow wireless=20 connectivity only traditional CAT-5 ethernet cable or USB. If you wish=20= to use a wireless ethernet card you must either use a wireless router=20 connected to your cable modem, a wireless access point on your network,=20= or have set up another Mac (with an Airport Card) as a software base=20 station (i.e. Apple's term for a software based wireless router). If you do not have any of these no wireless software or hardware in the=20= world will connect you to the internet. Unless a neighbor happens to=20 be running a wireless network and you are tapping into it. Hope this helps. Bill, I summarized a method for getting the driver installed a several days ago. There should be no reason to log on as root to install it, however you are correct that the installer should be improved (it will be--just wait a little while). The real problem is that most people do not provide accurate descriptions of their problems (e.g. you provide very little description) and most of the problems are actually network configuration / access point configuration problems rather than wirelessdriver problems. Technically, nothing is stopping anyone from making a shareware version of the driver as the BSD license allows this. The real issue is supporting all the users that have mis-configured their network /access point settings. Given that each persons network is different there is no "surefire" set of instructions to get it to work. The troubleshooting script helps somewhat but cannot solve the local network problems. If you want help, post more information about your set-up, what works as expected as what does not, post the output of the script too. I had the Orinoco gold card working by becoming a root user and using terminal to activate the wireless driver. I am on a G3 powerbook and OSx 10.2. It worked perfect until I had to restart and I can no longer get it to work. It is real hairy trying to make it work by starting the extension through terminal as a root user. I wonder ikf I have to uninsatll it first. I have come a long way because of the hard work and dedication of on line members. However, everyone does it slightly different and I become confused on the proper procedure. The documented procedure should tell a user if it requires them to be a root user and it should give detailed steps including how to become a root user. It would sure be nice to have a bullet proof procedure to acquire and install this wireless driver for Orinoco gold and skyline PN 473 cards. I have spent and many hours over 3 days reading and interpreting e-mails one site related to the new wireless driver. I for one would be happy to pay $20-30 for shareware that would acquire, unstuff, install and make the driver work regardless of restart or other application activities. Anyone want tp take a try at it? W. William Gillette Strategic Management Consultant Information Strategy Advisers, Inc. Phone 303-985-0353 Fax 303-969-0949 Mobile 303-916-6280 E-mail wgi...@at... |

Richard- Congrats! I wish I could say the same thing. I assume by home "router" you mean your cable modem? If this is the case, my cable modem was provided by my internet service provider (COX). Are you suggesting that in order for me to get the MUCH DESIRED connection to the internet via my lucent silver card I will need to purchase a different cable modem? This doesn't seem to make much sense since it use to work just fine. (At this point, I don't expect the solution to make any sense-since I've already tried everything that makes "sense"-so scratch that point.) Thanks for the clarification and enjoy your wireless connection! Tom -----Original Message----- From: wir...@li... I have a Mac G3 using OS X 10.1.5, trying to use the Orinoco Gold PC and Apple Airport. After installing and rebooting I get the "Wireless Config" window, but have no idea where to locate the WEP string of numbers. I also get no signal from the Airport. I have configured what I believed to be the IP Address of my ISP under "Network" under "Ethernet Adaptor(en1)" in "manual". Then I set it back to DHCP. I still get no signal from the Airport. I would appreciate any suggestions that anyone could supply. Thanks very much. Nick Hallack nha...@mi... |

Hi, thanks to all to have contributed to make this issue easier on everybody. Running PB G3 (1998) with boosted RAM 512MB, Farallon SkyLine 11Mb: - logged in as root, uninstalled beta 4. No more Wireless Configuration PrefPane - installed b5, restarted once, no en1 in the Network configuration. Restarted. - installed second time, restarted. - works fine. No WEP (but I didn't have it with b4 either, because of the AP I use. - the PC card icon in the Finder Menu doesn't show anything related to the card, except for the Eject Card command which is apparently workable, and was grayed out before the second install/restart. Great work, great contributions. Thanks, Charly' |

While using WAVELan Silver and the jaguar wireless driver on my Wallstreet, Internet Sharing (aka Software Base Station) on my G4, Rendezvous does not work. (Connect directly to Ethernet and all is well.) Is this behavior connected to the known issues with AppleTalk mentioned in another thread? Printer Sharing, on the other hand, works fine. Great job overall. Tresy Kilbourne |

Hi all! I am successfully using the 5.1beta driver under 10.2 on a PBG3Lombard/OrinocoGold. Rob and Yuriwho's (as well as many other folks' tips) are all good. I basically followed them: I ran the uninstall first, then the install. Got the greyed out en1 problem, plus the WirelessConfig preference panel was not yet appearing in the System Preferences. I simply ran the installer again, and everything was working as expected. Upon inserting my card I could then tweak the SysPrefs>Network>Show Port Configurations to my liking. I do have a System/Library/Extensions.kextcache file that appears to be new since installing the new driver, and does not seem to be the cause of any problems. I did not directly fiddle with this file at all. One unfortunate consequence, now when I insert my PCMCIA/compact flash card from my digital camera it is no longer mounted as a device on the desktop. Instead, the wireless card menu bar item comes up as if I had inserted my Orinoco. Also, I can't seem to gracefully eject the compact flash card anymore... :0( On Wednesday, September 4, 2002, at 03:19 PM, Rob McKeever wrote: > Rob: > This sounds suspiciously like the problem involving the > Extensions.kextcache file. This sounds suspiciously like the problem involving the Extensions.kextcache file. Yuriwho did a summary of fixes people have found for problems like this on Sept 1st. I've attached it below. -Rob -=-=-=-=- For those who are having problems with the b5.1 installation, try the following: download the latest release (b5.1) from http://wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net/ locate and doubleclick the uninstaller.command file from the disk image (it's in the utilities folder) provide your password when prompted in the terminal type the following in a terminal window: sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache delete WirelessDriver.pkg from /Library/Receipts/ delete any additional WirelessDriver PreferencePanes found anywhere on your system run the WirelessDriver installer package reboot login insert your wireless card a menu item should appear in the menubar indicating that the driver has recognized your card open the network PreferencePane you should have either en1 or en2 as available networks (In powerbooks with Airport cards installed, the airport card will be en1 and the PCMCIA wireless card will be en2, for everyone else the inserted wireless card will be en1.) You must configure the network PreferencePane appropriately for your access point. show the network port configurations and drag en1 (or en2 if appropriate) to the top of the list of available network ports. configure your IP Address appropriately and enter the DNS addresses supplied by your ISP. now open the WirelessConfig PreferencePane and enter the name of your wireless network and your password. If your card is recognized by the system (if the menu item appears) and you cant get connected, it is probably due to misconfiguration of your network/access point settings. Try disabling WEP on the accesspoint and manually configuring your ip/subnet/router and DNS numbers. Good luck Y -=-=-=-=- On Wednesday, September 4, 2002, at 12:07 PM, April Westberg wrote: > I've tried to look the the archives to see if there has been an answer > to this question, but all I see are lots of people asking but not many > solution replies. Beta 5 is currently only compiled for 10.2 and will not work on 10.1.x. The installer is rigged so that it won't open on older versions of the OS. There will be a version coming soon that will work with 10.1.x, but I don't have that installed on my machine right now and I'm also trying to get a few more bug fixes in first. -Rob On Wednesday, September 4, 2002, at 10:41 AM, Dewey H. I went to http://www.versiontracker.com/php/dlpage.php?id=11826 and downloaded the file. When I tried to install, the installer program would not open the file "WirelessDriver Beta 5-1.mpkg" on either of two different machines I tried it on. The machine I plan to use the system on is a G3 PowerBook with the translucent bronze keyboard (sometimes called the "Lombard" machine). I also tried it on my desktop G4. Both machines are running 10.1.5. What can I do now? I tried opening the troubleshooting file and the commands that followed seem to indicated that the files got installed (but I don't know enough about Unix to know what it meant). Please advise. -- Dewey H. I tried that at one point in time. I tried unplugging the airport as well. I could try it again, but the internet is working just fine plugged into the ethernet port-- so I don't think that can be it. Hi, Does anyone have experences with the "Zcom XI-300" 802.11b PC card? I couln'd find it in the "supported" list from the FAQ. I have one of these, branded "Draytek/Vigor", but they seem also te be=20 known as "LANEscape=99XI-300 Wireless PC Card" or "Zcomax XI-300". The=20 latter is said to contain the Prism II Chipset. Support for this PC card would encourage me to (finally!) switch from=20 MacOS-9 ;-) Some URLs: Draytek (Dutch) - http://www.draytek.nl/help/v2200.php?type=3D2200&fw=3D2.00a&show=3Dfaq#wi= reless Zcom - http://www.zcom.com.tw/support/support_2.asp Zcomax - http://www.zcomax.com/htm/PC-CFcards%20.htm Cheers, Joe. |

Rob & All- Still no luck with my G3 Powerbook 300/ Lucent Silver. I've fiddled like crazy to no avail. As I've mentioned, I have a strong signal with the Network Port en(1) showing up as desired with automatic settings through DHCP, but still no access to the internet. Can't speak for the access point, but I know that our driver doesn't handle AppleTalk correctly right now. Most access points won't relay AppleTalk (this includes Apple's Airport hubs), but instead only make it, and all other traffic, transparently available inside the firewalled segment with no restrictions. -Rob On Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at 11:34 AM, Doug Matheson wrote: > Can someone on this list confirm that the SMC wireless access point > [7004AWBR] does not support Appletalk? > > > Doug Matheson > Dept. of Psychology > University of the Pacific > Stockton, CA 95211 > http://www.uop.edu/cop/psychology/dwm.html |

Charles, I have an Orinocco card working with a Ti Book and have it working beautifully with an older version of the driver with 64bit WEP turned on. I assume that the 128bit WEP Orinocco cards would work just aswell. Cheers, Jarrod. Charles Albrecht wrote: >I'm considering buying a card to use on a Wallstreet under 10.2. Just delete the /Developer directory. There may be a few other bits left about, like the package receipt, but they're small and inconsequential. -Rob On Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at 12:03 PM, Gregory J. Hi, Just wanted to thank the creators of the Wireless package. Again you've come through with the 10.2 version. Had some initial difficulties, but once I followed Yuriwho's message on removing and re-installing, everything worked. Had to do this twice, but finally got it... Where do I send the check!!! Tim |
